TEST DRIVE

OCTOBER TEST DRIVE The city of Recollé... When the crypt doors creak, and the tombstones quake, spooks come out for a singing wake. Happy haunts materialize and begin to vocalize...grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize... Every year during the Halloween season, the city of Recollé comes to life with plenty of fall activities for everyone. There's something to do in every district if one were to take a look. What will you do today? I. Family fun seems to be the theme today over in Tribunal Terrace. Several tables are set up and in a semi-circle near Recollé Square with stacks of pumpkins, carving tools, paint and anything else you may need to create your own jack o'lantern. Other stations are set up for face-painting and games to win mini-sized candy bars including a ring toss, bowling, and bobbing for apples. Be careful with the apples though. They like to wiggle and jiggle with their happy little faces staring up out of the water. ...so maybe apple-bobbing is for the brave at heart. Are you the artsy type to carve a beautiful pumpkin? Are you helping to run the games (or even cheating to get more candy)? It's time to relax and let your creativity flow. II. Pumpkin-carving not your speed? Never fear, horror is here. Over in Tisse there's plenty to do for those looking for a little more adventure. Several coffee shops have harvest specials made with pumpkin, maple, and pecan flavors. Over at Flix a monster movie marathon and costume contest are taking place (with a prize of two free passes for the best monster costumes.) But the highlight of this district is the annual haunted funhouse. Anyone daring enough will find the usual spooks and scares in a haunted house, jump scares and fog machines galore. But...the house certainly didn't look so big from the outside. How did you possibly get shuffled straight to the center? No worries. This hall of mirrors will guide you out safely...if the walls closing in don't crush you first. It's a race against time as the halls narrow, and if you're one of the lucky ones you'll escape and exit through the main doors. For those not quite so lucky, the walls will stop just inches from crushing you completely before the floor drops open and you find yourself on a slide, falling through the dark and tumbling into an underground room filled with plastic skeletons, rubber spiders and more. There must be a way out, right? Hopefully you aren't alone and you can navigate the lair with a friend or two. III. Meanwhile, the rest of the city's usual hustle and bustle continues. The shopping districts are busy, students wander the sidewalks after class, and that oddly-shaped ghost appears right in the middle of the crowd. Wait, what? You could have sworn that ghost wasn't there before. Maybe you don't even believe in ghosts. You may blink a few times to clear your vision, but the faint outline of the ghost remains as a few more of them pop up around the city. They won't speak, but they will cause some trouble for anyone who gets too close whether it's by playing pranks on passerbys, stealing items and running away, sitting on a person and applying a gravitational force so they can't move or other crafty, sneaky tactics. Are the ghosts messing with you? Or are you going to find a way to mess with the ghosts? IV. As the sun begins to set, a strange sort of fog rolls in. Several citizens of the city may not even think it's unusual and others seem to capitalize on the weather. The Churchhill Downs Stables are hosting their annual haunted hayrides through Recollé Woods as soon as the sun sets. There are plenty of carts and chocobos saddled up and ready to go. Once passengers are seated the chocobos begin to trot forward into the woods as a pre-recorded ghost tour of the city takes place. The stories range from silly ones about two ghost children who like to play hide and seek in these woods to scarier ones about a jilted lover chasing her husband off a cliff at the edge of ocean. For the most part they're a bit cheesy and in good fun, but something about this haunted ride seems a bit...off. Peering into the fog you may see something strange that follows you, be it a monster or a shadow or an object. You may hear things whispering your name and you may see your greatest fear manifest right out of the fog and chase your cart through the woods. Even worse, it seems to follow you right out of the woods and back into the city. No matter where you run or where you hide, the fears from the fog will track you down and they change for every single person in the city. Will you run or will you fight? You may wish to be careful since the creatures will fight back. BONUS. With only a few short weeks left until the end of October, Retrospec's Halloween Mode is in full swing and popping up on new users' devices. Retrospec users will find their application decked out in cheerful Halloween colors, and their userpics in a randomized (work safe) costume. However, there's always a trick to each treat and this time the seasonal mode can't be turned off for new users. Notifications chime with zombie groans, a rousing game of Candy Crush must be played and beaten before you can use your device again, and the new Trick or Treat function has a few upgrades. When a user enables this function, they will be met with the phrase "Trick or Treat?" Users who select "treat" will get one virtual candy! Yay! The catch though is that they will also find themselves in a costume representing that specific candy. Should a user pick "trick", however, they will find all sorts of harmless but unpleasant things happening to them including but not limited to pranks, being splashed by vehicles driving through puddles of water, being unable to speak in anything but rhymes and other such things. None of these effects last over ten minutes, but the game will show up periodically over and over again and even giving you the option to play the game with others. [ workshop comment! hinata morisawa is 16 years old, does gymnastics, and is a member of the cooking club mostly to eat the finished products. he's the youngest of three siblings and has a very energetic best friend. also his eyes are brown and not green gray! everything else tracks physically though. ]

[ while hinata isn't getting his face painted, he is in fact running the face-painting booth! hello. he does have a pink heart dashed on his left cheek, and he's weilding a paintbrush with casual competence as he sits on his stool and does face after face of anyone who comes by. he not only has the usual paints, but some little gems and some glitter?

he grins if you start to pass his station by. ]

Hey! Only like, ten tickets to get your face done. Or two dollars. Proceeds go to the cooking club, so please help us out, okay~?

[ ah, so he got pulled into this for that sort of reason...for the record, his hair is pulled back at the back of his neck with a pink hairtie he probably borrowed from his sister or a friend, to keep it out of his way as he works. ]

[ funhouse mirrors are amusing, okay. there's infinite hinatas reflected in infinite mirrors and he stops in front of one that makes him way too tall and laughs. ]

Ouuuuuuch. [ that comes after being dropped through the slide and into this plastic skeletons-spiders-and-more room. hinata sits up, rubbing at his head and pouting a little. ] You know, I think maybe they went a little overboard this year! But, oh well! I still have to get out first to win a little game!

[ finally noticing someone else...was he just talking to himself? ]

Want to come along? I promise I'm good at getting out of things! Almost as good as I am at getting into them! ☆ [ that's probably not encouraging, actually. ]

[Setup with a pumpkin in front of her, she seems to have a little difficulty getting the knife into the top of the orange gourd. A look of determination she starts to wiggle the knife up and down until it finally puncture the pumpkin. Euphie claps her hands together looking proud of her success, she has never done this alone before but the idea of having a cute little carved pumpkin is too good to pass up.

Once the knife is in she looks at the other tools and then scrolls through her phone at pumpkin carving ideas. Any one that looks at the images will see most of them are cats, since they always look the cutest to her. With some work cut out for her she wouldn't mind some help.]

Hmmm, so you have to scoop out the guts out first...right?

[Long hair tied up in a ponytail, she waits her table looking around before she jumps up when her named is called. All too happy the young woman takes her drink from the barista. She saw pecan coffee and thought it sounded pretty amazing, though what she does to coffee might make some cry. Drink in hand she takes it to the station to add sugar and other items. Opening the lid she starts to pour cream in, perhaps too much, then even more sugar until it taste more like a cavity creation than coffee.

Grabbing a stir stick she begins to stir the drink, the coffee?]

II-B

[Not much on haunted things, Euphemia stands outside of the funhouse a ticket firm in her hand. She seems to be talking herself into going inside. She is dressed in a maid outfit, it is that time of the year after all. Though she didn't participate in the costume contest, instead just buying a ticket.]

Stop being a chicken...you can go inside, Euphie.

[She mutters under her breath but then looks around to see if anyone else might be going inside, that she could maybe go with. Is this was how you make new friends? Doing scary things, right? Someone nearby she finally reaches out and taps their shoulder.]

Excuse me...are you going inside too?

IV

[The hayride started fun enough and Euphemia loved the chocobos, enough that she had been giving them some love before being herded into the carts. As the stories went on she chuckles at some of the tales until there was the beginning of whispers. Jumping a little she looks around when she heard a soft voice saying her name. No one on the cart knew her yet but she knew it was her name. Trying to calm herself down she moves close to the person next to her, her eyes now straining to see into the fog that was rolling in. It was so strange she thought there was someone there? That seemed silly though, when she notices she is nearly clinging to the person next to her she moves away a little and waves her hands.]

Oh! I'm very sorry, I think the stories are getting to me...

[She hears her name again and looks around a little more frantic.]

[ To be fair, Minato had barely noticed how close she was getting because he's already half asleep despite the bumpy ride. But he blinks the exhaustion away when he's spoken to, looking over at Euphemia to shake his head and let her know that it's alright, though he might as well not have bothered because she turns away from him and looks about her instead. Without moving, Minato glaces towards the side of the road as well, but without knowing what he's to look for, that little act of solidarity is a bit pointless. ]

...They're just stories.

[ Also not very helpful. But something to keep in mind, in case she's worried about ghosts or monster or other sorts of fantastical things that do not exist. ]

Natsume Sakasaki | Ensemble Stars

I.

[ It has been some time since Natsume carved a pumpkin with his mother. As a small child she had mustered up the energy to sit down with him and carve out the faces he'd doodled on the gourd in marker. Once he was old enough to use knives without (too much) worry, she'd slowly begun to back away from assisting him until she stopped altogether.

Pumpkin carving had lost some of its luster after that.

That's what makes it kind of surprising that Natsume is here now slowly working on his own jack-o-lantern creation right now. Boredom mixed with the fact that it was there and something to do managed to get the best of him.

He will borrow other people's carving tools without asking first. Art doesn't require permission to be made. ]

II.

[ When the walls had started to close in on him, Natsume had stopped moving completely. There wasn't a single second that he thought that they'd actually crush him. The lawsuit wouldn't be worth the moment of true horror that a dead college student would bring.

Unfortunately, he hadn't expected the floor to drop out under him, and there's a moment of genuine surprise as he goes sliding down into the skeleton pit. It takes him a good fifteen seconds to climb back onto his feet.

There's a huff that's somewhere between a laugh and a sound of disdain as he picks a plastic spider out of his hair, and tosses it blindly into the darkness around him.

Now how exactly is he supposed to get out of this? ]

IV.

[ The haunted hayride hadn't seemed like anything particularly interesting when he'd opted to go on it at first, but he thought that hearing some of the local ghost stories might be interesting. You never know when you want to branch out of your normal fields of study and attempt a seance.

But... not really. In all honestly, Natsume's not entirely sure he believes in ghosts. For all of the other topics he's fascinated by, he's never felt there has been strong, definitive evidence for the existence of spirits. Far be it from Natsume to be a complete non-believer, but he's certainly a skeptic.

He'd love to have something appear to prove him wrong that's more compelling than a man in a costume. So far he hasn't seen it, but there has been movement behind the cart for awhile now, and Natsume has lost interest in the stories. As everyone else in the cart seems to huddle closer to the front for warmth and safety, Natsume has been pushing his way to the back, until he's the closest to the the shadowy figure that moves through the thick fog.

It's still some ways off, but he's certain now it's not just a trick in the gloomy light. ]

Now that's unusual.

[ When he finally speaks up, his voice has a strange cadence too it, adding extra stress to the last syllable of his last word. He doesn't take his eyes off the figure to see if anyone else heard him. ]

[The house was laughable to say the least. It could use for some major improvements and Ritsu spent most of his time on his phone taking notes for a video later. Halloween was his time of the year and with his new change in eye color he made sure his costume would be great, being a vampire costume...because why not? Though as the walls close he watches at the guy in front of him seems unaffected too until, that is, there is no floor. Ritsu watches with some amusement as he falls into the floor but then seems to be doomed to the same end. As he tumbles into the pile of skeletons her sits up rather grumpy and throws a look to the other that's here.]

II.

Haunted houses? Spooky scares? Marina is so there. Having no one to go with isn't going to stop her from going through the haunted house on her own, always up for a challenge and loving the adrenaline rush of being spooked. The jump scares make her laugh and startle, and the foreboding atmosphere only serves to excite her more, enjoying the feeling of dread growing in the pit of her stomach as the haunted house seemed to go on far longer than it had any right to.

Set ups with halls of mirrors were always disconcerting, and this time was certainly no exception. Seeing yourself going on infinitely in the corner of your eye was enough to give you a jolt, the slightest movement of your own causing an accidental reaction. However, any fears Marina feels is ramped up to an extreme as the walls begin to close in around her, causing her to take off as fast as she can towards the exit with a yelp of alarm. Who knew claustrophobia was such a fear of hers?

She knows logically that this was all playing pretend, but she allows herself to feel the adrenaline rush of fright as she runs along, huffing and regretting just how little she actually bothered to exercise. Not the fastest runner, this one. Thus, down the slide she goes with a yell of alarm at the sudden drop, sliding down into the pit with an "oomf".

Yeesh. Marina swats some fake spiders out of her hair and stands up, brushing herself off further and glancing around at her surroundings. Ah. Hm. She had absolutely no idea how to get out of here, with there being no obvious doors.

As her eyes adjust to the dark, she makes out another figure, heaving a sigh of relief and offering a slight wave.

"Hey. Stuck down here too, huh?"

III.

Incredulous, Marina stares across the street at the ghostly figure, blinking rapidly as if it might cause the sight to clear out of her vision. When it's obvious that she's actually seeing exactly what she thinks she's seeing, the immediate thought is to figure out how in the world someone was doing this trick, and where it was coming from.

She glances around at the nearby corners and street lamps, looking for any sort of camera or projector, eventually approaching and circling around the figure in confusion, causing quite a few confused looks from people wondering why she was walking circles around nothing in the middle of the sidewalk.

The first person to actually stop to also stare at the figure in the street will catch her attention, and she gestures towards them, voice low.

"You see this too, right? It's not just me?"

IV.

Okay, so hayrides weren't exactly on her list of things to do when she was alone, they were more fun with friends considering they weren't exactly that scary, so she wasn't planning on actually getting on the ride at all.

What was catching her attention were the birds attached to the hayrides, causing her to stare dumbstruck at them as her brain tried to process what she was looking at.

"Since when... what...?" She seems pretty stuck on this train of thought, mouth partly ajar and brow knit.

"Hey, uh..." She motions towards the nearest person, still staring at the Chocobo. "You see that too, right?"

[Cleo had been trying to scale the damn wall when Marina drops from above. Well. Okay. She sheepishly detaches from the wall, trying to pretend she didn't do anything odd, and praying Marina didn't see that.]

I am... Is this a normal part of haunted houses?

[Reading a book, Bruno navigates around people with the ease of someone who evidently does this on a frequent basis. By chance, he glances up—and gives a start.

Because wtf, ghost. It's not the first time he's seen one pop up by now, but it's?? starting to freak him out???]

J-Just a trick of the light. Just a trick of the light, or some sort of childish prank. Ghosts are nothing more than the result of electromagnetic fields and infrasound fooling the human mind, and potentially toxic hallucinations...

[Eeeeeexcept then a ghost yanks the book out of his hands and starts running off with it.]

Ah—!

[HELP HIM.]

BONUS

[Anyone passing by might notice Bruno on a bench, furiously writing something with one hand as he fiddles with his phone using the other.

... He's playing Candy Crush.

And writing down a comprehensive guide on how to beat it, because damn it, if he has to play this stupid game over and over again, he's going to be efficient about it!!]

1a. these are some bad apples

[ He's been told time and time again that he really should think some of his decisions through more. Which. He does, he really does. Rowen is a very careful person. He studies intensely, always looks at things from different angles, just in case. When he's working in his chemical labs, he's sure to follow all the safety instructions to a T.

But then there's times like this, where he's laughed himself sick over the insanely jittering apples in the bucket.

Of course, he's encountered the Weird Fruit before, who hasn't in this city? But it's an altogether different thing to see them all vibrating around in the water like they've got batteries or too much sugar.

So, call him crazy, but this 15 year old idiot has his hands behind him, grin huge as he waits for the signal to start bobbing for the little weirdos. Maybe stop him? Who knows what those things have. ]

1b. pumpkin spice is life

[ His hair is still damp from his earlier adventure with bobbing for psychotic apples, but this doesn't deter Rowen from participating in other things, like pumpkin carving. At least these fruit-gourd-veggie-whatever the hell they are don't have crazy faces.

Er, at least not ones that people hadn't carved there on purpose.

He's carefully slicing off pieces of the rind, foot jittering under the table as he works. If you squint, maybe you can make sense of his design, which is still in its fledgling stages.

Either way, he's gonna lean over to whoever is closest and ask– ]

Hey, d'ya have one of those medium carver things?


3. it's a spook vs spook world out there

[ Rowen believes in ghosts. In spirits and the great beyond. For someone so science driven, it's kind of weird. But, it's there all the same. After all, there's nothing to say they don't exist. No solid proof. Never mind that there's no solid proof saying they do exist.

Still, he's not exactly afraid of the spirit world or the afterlife. Whatever it may bring. He's interested in ghosts purely from a scientific standpoint– like how do they exist on two different planes? Or are their planes closer together than people think? He just wants to know, wants to crack the case wide open.

He's not really expecting to get his chance as he's walking down the street. There's a crowd of people he's weaving through and when they part, there's a thing in the midst of them all. It's just hovering there, slightly transparent, looking creepy as hell. Rowen frowns at this, not-so-covertly looking around for signs of a projector or something. Some kind of childish prank someone is pulling because they can.

Nothing there. So, he concludes, either the projector is hidden well or this thing is the real deal. Quickly, he amends his initial theory when he sees someone get caught in its orbit, their sweater getting turned inside out and shoe laces tying together, the ghoul snickering in its weird way. ]

Hey! Pick on someone else! [ He doesn't hesitate to stride up closer. Someone save this idiot? Or maybe you're being saved? ]

Ah - my heroooooooo! [ it's the shoelaces. which, well, hinata has pretty amazing balance? but even so he can't really handle that while he's walking so he's windmilling his arms and may knock into rowen. luckily years of friendship probably mean rowen won't just drop him on his ass RIGHT.

[ Mio, as she's called here in Recolle is always down for a little family fun, regardless of whether or not she's actually doing things with her family — like her cute little sister, Kotone (although she'd argue that she's the cuter sister, really) because she's here to have some fun! It's a little different than what she has to do on a day to day basis as the heir of the Sonozaki family, after all.

Without a care in the world, she opts to quickly grab the the first arm that she can find and ask a rather innocent question with the biggest, most innocent grin that she can muster up: ]

You wouldn't mind coming with me to play a little game, would you? I'll make sure to make it worth your time. ☆

[ But if you're Kotone, you'll probably get a completely different set of lines - specifically "let's go boy hunting! ♥" because that's definitely A Thing - although she's still planning on dragging her around regardless if she does find her for good family fun. She's here for this, as the good older sister she is.

Don't trust her. Especially considering that she's hyper competitive and plays to win. ]

[ Mio's not one for ghosts, so seeing that causes her to pause, but she doesn't exactly flinch; she was never overly religious, even when there were some who believed in the occult. But the fact that they're causing a little bit of mischief is not how she wanted things to turn out for her today, but she doesn't want to deal with doing something about it herself...

So she goes for the next best option: to seek out some help.

Of course, the way she's doing that isn't exactly the most conventional, as she screams out: ]

Someoooone! Please help me!

[ Surely someone is bound to come and rescue her if she acts like the cute and innocent girl that she is, right? In fact, she'll even double down on it as she plays up the act with crocodile tears, a clear and evident pout, and her hand near her lips, slightly trembling. ]

★ OPTION BONUS ( TRICK ).

This is so strange...

[ Mio can't help but stare at the application that's suddenly wormed its way into her phone, wondering what she should do with the new strange application she's got, and honestly? She doesn't think that picking trick will be that bad.

What's the worst that could happen?

Of course 'the worst' is proven soon enough as she eventually gets splashed with water, causing the nice white dress to get completely wet to the point where people might be able to see through it a little bit. Rest in pieces... ]

Gross! [ She manages to say that with quite a bit of disgust, shaking her fists in the air as her brows scrunch. ] Why did that truck have to come so close?!

[ Mio sighs, a little self deprecating. ]

Well, it's probably just bad luck. At least it wasn't muck... [ And that's when she realizes that she's rhyming. Ah. ] What's with this rhyming?

[ She points at a random stranger - is it you? - looking at them with frantic eyes. ]

[This was a first...a cop trying to chase down a ghost. It was almost like the scene from a comedy and Ritsu is laughing to himself. Perhaps a little too loudly though as he watches him struggle with the spirit.]

[ Family Fun isn’t what draws Amanda to the Terrace, but rather, the promise of games and candy. The competitive drive in her is strong, and she lines up several times for each game, regardless of whether she won or not. But that gets old fast, and she resorts to some other tactics to switch it up a little. Bowling? She hucks the fake, plastic bowling ball as hard as she can - she gets a strike, but is also kindly asked to leave. Ring ross? She hits the volunteer in the face with the ring - and honest accident - and is also kindly asked to leave. This is no longer Fun, and she’s huffing and puffing near the pumpkin carving station. ]

Geez, I didn’t even hit her that hard… Well, whatever, guess I’ll get a pumpkin and go home.

A. [ This is more her speed - the engagement, the adrenaline, even if it’s some spooky props and moving parts. Even the company is somewhat nice, even if it means squealing together over jumpscares. Or, tolerating Amanda being back on her bullshit and literally trying to climb over a fake wall, just because. ]

[ The chocobo rides were more for chilling than anything, even with the “scary” ghost stories. It’s all in good fun, and even someone who’s going turbo 90% of the time needs to take a load of every once in awhile. Which is why, when there’s some vague, nebulous presence in the fog, Amanda ignores it. And ignores it. ]

[ But the feeling? Person? Doesn’t go away. It starts to irritate her. ]

[Rean finally escaped his..."volunteer" work later in the day, and tried to go about his business. Then he encountered a ghost.

...At least, that has to be what happened. Cause at the moment Rean is standing firmly in the middle of the side walk, and behind him said ghost. He refuses to look at it. It keeps hovering around him, and he keeps looking away. It is a completely ridiculous and almost certainly pointless battle of attrition, yet it is one he seems absolutely intent on winning.

[Elliot was at the terrace because it was part of his ReVA duties to help with these events. But really, even if he wasn't on the clock, he'd likely would've come to check out the festivities. It was nice that this town held events like this. Even though this was a huge city, it made it feel more like a community.

Being the intern, he was told by the higher-up volunteers that they had a "new volunteer" helping with running a booth today, and to run supplies over to him. If Elliot found it strange that a new volunteer sprung out of nowhere, he didn't question it. Instead he just grabbed the box of supplies (small candies, paint, etc) and hauled it over.

Except when he got close enough to see who the "new volunteer" was? He freezes and stares with a deer in the headlights look. Holy frick - it was a guy from the memories he's been getting. There was no mistake. How? No one told him this could--

But Elliot stands staring a bit too long, as some rather excited kids go running by and plow right into him- or rather, shoving him aside as they run passed. He yelps as he goes crashing to the ground. The box of supplies goes falling out of his hands and tumbles to the ground too, contents spilling out.

She gets close to trying for one before she notices those faces, and then she's backing up fairly quickly with a quick, low curse. [Luckily for anyone who finds themselves stuck with her in this strange underground room, they manage to miss her increasing statements of distress as the walls closed in, but they can hear the tail end of her shriek as she tumbles into a pile of rubber spiders and skeletons. She makes a face as soon as she sees where she is and what's around her before she turns to her companion in this room.]

Tsuyu had heard of the bizarre holiday but never got to experience it. until now. she was determined to explore the culture of her new home by checking out the fun at tribunal terrace and, after politely observing people take pumpkins, she decided to have a go at carving her very first pumpkin.)

Hmm. (she thoughtfully taps her finger against her chin, licking the corner of her mouth as she stares down the round pumpkin.) Where to begin?

(in keeping up with trying new things, Tsuyu had made it her mission to try every town square game there is. she isn't particularly interested in the candy so when she does win, she hands it off to the nearest person.)

It's just fruit, right? (she stares blankly down at the wiggly, jiggly, homestuck fruit. they looked oddly adorable but surely they were just fruit and not alive?)

(there was a lot to take in at the local shoppes and cafes. so many options and seasonal options that she'd never thought to consider. for a small town girl coming to a new foreign city, it's almost daunting to see all the specialty items being advertised and highlighted. so it's not surprising that Tsuyu hung back from the end of the line to carefully go over each item on the menu. with a pensive sigh, and a finger tapping at her chin, she turns to her companion, or the nearest person.)

What do you suggest? There's a lot of options.

ii- haunted funhouse

Hey, lets check that out. (with pumpkin spice coffee in one hand, Tsuyu points at the haunted house. it looks pretty harmless and fun but, she knows it can get scary so she turns to her companion and offers her free hand.) If you get scared you can hold my hand.

iv- hayride

(Tsuyu's been pumped for the ghost tour, she's braver than most but this would give her a chance to learn even more about the local history. plus who doesn't love a good horror story about the new city you live in? dressed up warmly in flannel and a scarf, she jumps up onto the cart to take her place.)

She has seated herself beside someone who's in the middle of carving, eyes pleading and a small begging whine coming from her. You don't need that pumpkin, right? She can have some, yes? ]

[ Like a rational person, Kiyoshi lies staring up at where he slid down from. He squishes a rubber spider in a hand and shifts so a plastic bone isn't poking him in the back.

It's not uncomfortable and he's in no hurry to be anywhere yet at least so...

He'll just take a nap after he's rolled out of the drop zone. He doesn't want anyone to land on him when they slide down, after all. And he puts an alarm so it'll wake up up long before he needs to be anywhere, too. But then, yup, time for a nap. ]

[ He does not chalk it down to choosing "trick" on the app yet. But when he takes the animals out for a walk, they keep getting splashed. At this rate, Beatrice and Radish won't want to put a paw out the front door. The cats are both digging their claws into his shoulders and that's three for four looking displeased, two downright miserable. Hestia, on the other hand, seems overjoyed at all the random waves of water that splashes up on them. ]

[ It's mocking him with its endearing smile and mini-Charleston dance. As for its fruit brethren, they've been nicely cut up into slices. They're actually a hit with the kids, since they come with little cups of caramel dip. ]

[ Originally the kids were supposed to do it, but they found it funnier when he had trouble with one particular one that's been giving him trouble, and he fished out the plain ones to catch this particular smiley one. It's nicknamed Apple Capone. ]

[ Speak of the devil, that poor rabbit flies right over their heads and just out of Shinpachi's reach or reflexes. Cripes, he really doesn't like reliving his days of being tiny and bullied as the new kid like this, thank you. ]

And her gaze only continues to go from one thing to the next when the doll flies over them. Due to her height she jumps up in attempt to reach the doll to no avail, immediately scoffing. ]

Finished, this pumpkin is handed over to a kid and he flopped back, not caring that the rind and pumpkin bits were sticking to his hair or his rather worn scrub pants he was wearing. ]

Ah, isn't this relaxing? [ There was a small hair pulling fight between two kids no more then three feet away from and his just is grinning like it's the cutest thing ever. ] So relaxing, right?

[ Haunted houses have all sorts of stuff in them - people jumping out to scare others, moving walls, floating weird glowy things, doctors in blood-stained clothing walking casually through the house humming. No, wait, he's not one of the jump scares. No, this guy is an actual doctor just off his shift and had decided that nothing beats relaxation than wandering around with people trying to scare him. He already attempted to correct the grip of one of the jump-scares that was holding a knife and now he was tapping the mirrors and frowning. ]

Do you think they're using real glass instead of something less breakable? [ No, he isn't noticing that the walls are moving. Someone help this poor idiot before he gets squished. ]

[ He had been planning on grabbing a coffee and hang out with a few friends from work, but then the new app appeared on his phone and he couldn't stop it from sounding off. Especially since it seems to have gotten stuck on a high pitch witch's shriek. ]

[He's probably just daydreaming or something, right? Just a trick of light or the fog or something. Yuu tries to shrug it off as he attempts to turn his attention back to the others and the conversation with the hayride.]

[You know, Cumore generally isn't here for these types of festivities, but he can't say he's entirely opposed, either; it's more of a socialization thing than an actually...participating thing, as far as he goes. See what people are actually doing with themselves, content himself with the notion that he's not missing much, go back to spending a thrilling evening with his cat.

But the atmosphere is nice, it's leaving him feeling more energized than agitated, even if parts of this seem a little odd; he didn't do it by way of playing the game properly, but the fact of the matter is that for the time being he's got one of those apples that he's emancipated from the barrel, and it's got a face and it's dancing like nobody's watching, and he is just tossing it in the air and watching it vibrate its way up and holy shit, this thing looks so excited to be here?]

They're almost like particularly intense little dogs, aren't they.

[That is probably not something that you say right before zinging it into the air again so you can catch it, but you know what, it looks like it's enjoying that too, primarily because these things look like they enjoy everything.

...He's going to bite the thing eventually, giving absolutely no fucks about the fact that it has a face and is capable of looking at him while he does that, but clearly these apples were put on earth for our enjoyment and he's going to enjoy the hell out of this thing while it lasts.]

Needless to say, he's not tolerating the jumpscares very well, and he's kind of in a state of hackles permanently up, he's going to give himself apoplexy at this rate.]

Well, hopefully you're proud of yourself, you have activated my basic human instinct to not like things suddenly being where they shouldn't.

[Coming from the kind of military family that she comes from, one of the few perks she actually enjoys is that she ended up trained to be wildly good at physical activity without ever actually realizing it. Angela puts on a show by continually, time after time, landing the ring flush on the pole. Each victory gets a pump of the fist and devilish grin at the poor person running that game that is getting destroyed by Angela's leet skillz.]

I have to admit, they certainly had me going with those walls closing in. I didn't know Recollé had the budget for a haunted house like this. Aside from the plastic skeleton. One would think at this point, they would spring for something more lifelike, no? They are kind of cute, actually. Or rather, funny.

[What fresh hell is this where she can only speak in numbers. Forgive her for trying to get your attention, but she's starting to freak out.]

[ Hmm... numbers... Minato wasn't there to see what happened, to connect this new numeric language to fiddling around on one's phone; he sits a bit away, a sketchpad balanced on his knees and scribbling in those numbers on the corner of his paper as if that would shine any light on what Angela means, whether there's a pattern in any of it, or if it's some mathematical constant he might know.

There's nothing like that, so he flips the paper over, and speaks up. ]

Zero, seven, seven, three, four...?

[ He writes the numbers out on the pages and holds it up for her: "07734". Turns it upside down: "hELLO" ]

[He doesn't consider himself the artist of the family but Foggy has a clear vision of what face he wants to carve into a pumpkin this year. Once the inside of the pumpkin is hollowed out he begins carving two steeply arched eyes with round pupils at the bottom and a very large open smiling mouth. He steps back from his work a couple times during the process and nods in satisfaction the third time. He sets his hands on his hips with a proud accomplished sigh and admires his work.]

ib. This is Family Friendly? aka THOSE FREAKY APPLES

[Moving apples with faces are normal. Moving apples with faces are normal? Wait. When did moving apples with faces become normal? GOOD GOD MOVING APPLES WITH FACES?

Foggy feels a little woozy and a touch nauseous as he looks into the beady eyes of the apples floating on the rippling water of the bobbing tank. In August when he moved to Recolle he had been amused and made a point of buying one of the dancing fruit to bring home and watch wiggle up and down the kitchen counter before eating it with lunch. Now? Now it's like the apples are in the uncanny valley. Eye contact with them sends shivers down his spine.]

No! [He says firmly shaking a finger at his unblinking edible audience.] Fruit is not supposed to be this creepy! What are you? Did you come from a possessed orchard in Willy Wonka's backyard? Do you. Have. Feelings?

[He swallows loudly and cups his hand over his mouth. That nausea just increased.]

Holy s***. Does eating one of these things count as murder? [These are the important questions.

iii. Casper the Jerkass Ghost

[Foggy is waiting in line at a coffee shop and staring blankly into the pastry case when he sees something floating in the reflection on the glass. He blinks a few times, thinking it's his caffeine depraved head playing tricks on him, then he finds himself looking into the large empty eyes of a ghost. He startles, jerking wide awake in surprise. His mouth goes agape as he watches the ghost float above the pastries in the case.]

What the hell? [He throws his hands on the glass case and leans in, earning stares and scowls from other customers.] Tell me I'm not the only one seeing this!

[The ghost hovers back and forth then takes an interest in one of the cookies and grabs it. It promptly turns to leave with the cookie and floats up out of the case only for the cookie to fall back down when it hits the glass. The ghost realizes its mistake and dives back into the case to retrieve its prize, making a low noise like a grumble. Cookies are a solid. #ghostproblems Foggy laughs. #schadenfreude]

[ No, Foggy was not the artist of the familiy. That honour belonged to Natalie despite her age. She was sixteen and showed no signs of slowing down in her artwork, or any notion of giving up this "phase". She was in it for life, whether or not it was going to bring her riches.

[The costume contest over at Flix doesn't start for a few hours, so Xiaolang's killing time at the pumpkin carving booth, eyebrow furrowed and attention entirely fixed to hollowing a decently sized gourd in front of him. After all, if he wants to be a better at engineering, he's got to hone his creative skills a bit, right? And it's not like he's entirely bad at handling knives or crafting things in general.

But... well...

Maybe he should have picked a costume with more hand dexterity before giving this a go. (The children occasionally running over to him to pull on his tail doesn't help either) Someone maybe give him a hand? Literally?]

[The costume contest was a complete bust (seriously, how could they not pick his werewolf costume? It was GREAT), but the night is still young, and Xiaolang is wandering the streets of Tisse, debating on what to do. Going home was probably the best option-- he had at least two essays that needed to be finished, as well as doing more test runs on his science club project-- but there was something magical in the air tonight, something that insisted to stay, and that indecision is clear in his eyes as they fall upon the Haunted House nearby. Do you want to be the person to push him in? (Also, literally, if possible?)]

[So either you managed to get him in there, or some impatient person outside has shoved him in, but Xiaolang is looking wholly unimpressed by layout, taking everything in with a critical eye and muttering half to himself.]

This is supposed to be spooky? What's so scary about a bunch of mirrors and some fog anyway?

[Maybe he spoke too soon. As soon as the walls begin to grind and close in, he holds out a hand (or a paw... depends on if he's actually gotten those darn mitts off yet), eyes determined but his voice with a touch of panic.]

C'mon, we've got to get out of here!

[Whether you take his hand or not, he bolts, trying to get to the exit, except... he's just a hair too late, and he tumbles down the trap door, possibly dragging you down with him. OOPS. The dust clears and Xiaolang struggles to sit back up, prying a squishy spider off of his face.]

Ugh. I knew I should have just went home.

[Xiaolang is in his usual haunt, the Recolle public library, and he's deep at work, writing pages of notes and checking the piles of books he has hoarded around him. He's so absorbed in his studies, he barely notices the spirit who sneaks up behind him, until they reach over and shove the huge pile of books to the floor, landing with a cacophonous thud, much to his surprise and anger.]

HEY! JUST WHAT IN THE HECK DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!

[It's not until a moment later that realization dawns upon Xiaolang's face, and his face turns a shade very close to crimson. Someone please just bury him in these books now, please.]

III. Ghostly Fun

[This really is not how he wished to spend his walk home. Normally such a time is pleasant. Quiet even. He simply leaves the bakery that he works at or the university he is attending and it's a lovely walk back to his apartment. Certainly not filled with hideous looking ghosts that find it amusing to steal his coat he was putting on and playing keep away.

Biffy is in quite the huff as he crosses his arms to look upon the creatures with such disapproval. He certainly doesn't recall the city ever having these things before. No, wait. There have been strange things before? Honestly it's all terribly confusing and does not solve his problem.]

I am sure you aren't aware of how much that jacket cost me but if you do anything to harm it there will be consequences.

[Shhhh. Let him threaten the ghosts okay. Or just help him get his jacket back.]

IV. Haunted Rides

[Biffy can't say he sees a reason to not enjoy one of these carriage rides which is why he's here. A pity he doesn't have anyone here with him. Still, he's not about to let that slow him down as he puts on his prettiest smile and slides on over to the nearest person who looks available and not with someone.]

So you're here for one of these rides as well? Would you care to have someone to sit next to? I'm sure it will be far more fun that way.

[And he winks. Hard to tell if he's flirting or not though. But it's Biffy so more than likely that's exactly what he's doing whether you are man or woman.]

[When Biffy comes up to him, he immediately tenses for a moment. He hasn't been able to tell what's what this month. so he just.... stares... at Biffy, as if trying to determine whether he's real or not.

Wait, did this guy just wink at him? An eyebrow raises in confusion. But, all things considered, he'd rather ride with a stranger than by himself with all this creepy bullshit.]

Yea, sure. As long as you're not actually one of the creepy things.

[It's said flat, showing that he's tired more than anything.

Still, he'll be a gentlemen to Biffy, holding the carriage door open for him and helping him up. Little things like that.]

[Much like everywhere else in the city, Tisse's local arcade is taking advantage of the season to make some cold hard cash. There're decorations up around the inside of the building, ranging from the occasional fake skeleton chained to the wall, a large realistic spider prop that takes up a corner of the ceiling complete with an intricately designed web out of that spray web in a can and the best part (in the owner's opinion, definitely not hers), a life size witch statue that springs to life when you walk past it, with flashing red eyes and one of three spooky catchphrases that definitely hasn't gone off so much today she wants to snap it in half.

The main pull of the season is a new game, which is not only exclusively available until November 1st (the large, eye catching halloween sign in the window making it clear and emphasizing that you should "play it while you can!") but there're also only three or four cabinets available for it. The line for each one is evident the moment you walk in, with some people even wearing full halloween costumes despite it being far too soon for that. The only explanation you might get is from a nearby group of people leaving as you enter, mumbling about how they should go buy fake horns or a cheap mask and come back later.

Everyone's favourite arcade clerk is even in full costume herself, complete with pale, grey skin, fake horns and red contact lenses...of course, she isn't looking nearly as enthusiastic. Once you approach the counter, without even looking away from her phone, she just says--]

If this is about the game, you need a full costume. You can't just wear an eyepatch or fake horns.

[So, ghosts. That's a thing.

As it stands, Aki's in hot pursuit of one that's playfully fleeing from her, holding what appears to be a key in its hand. She doesn't share its enthusiasm though, looking (and sounding) pissed off as she runs after it.]

You're gonna wish you were in hell once I'm through with you, you ghost bastard!

[She abandoned the chocobos the moment things got weird. She wasn't actually there for the hayride or anything; Aki doesn't need any excuse to go hang around chocobos. But as the fog gets heavier and starts playing tricks on her by manifesting the one thing she doesn't wanna see right now, she bolts.

[As she's running through the streets if you happen to be in her way, she just...pushes you aside. She will unapologetically push you onto the ground and keep going, offering nothing but a-]

Move it or lose it!

[And of course, with the fog setting in, maybe what was chasing her is now your worst nightmare, and it's catching up. You might not wanna hang around.]

[She ducks into the nearest building; it could be your workplace, or if you're someone she knows, she might even slip into your house or apartment.

Point is she's here and she ain't leaving.]

INTRUDER --

[ Out of the dark comes Sakura, dressed in a traditional kimono and wielding a sword. She moves to strike whoever came in but she stops her momentum when she sees who it is and falls into the floor as she trips over herself, her sword clattering to the ground and a dog barking from the other room.

She's such a good warrior. ]

i. family festival!

a. face painting.
[ as the resident kindergarten teacher in training, nazuna is an expert with arts and crafts, so he's the first one to dive in and volunteer to help. he's immediately shuffled to work with the little kids, so you can find him sitting cross legged on a colorful blanket, surrounded by paints and paintbrushes, and most of all, surrounded by children. there's a whole horde of adoring little kids around him, and it seems like he can't get a break, but nazuna is clearly loving it.

niichan!, the kids are chorusing, jumping all over him and climbing in his lap, and nazuna is wielding his paintbrush like a pro, moving from person to person decorating faces with jack o lanterns, bats, princess sparkles and just about anything the kids will ask for. he's running low on red paint from all the spidermans, and nazuna looks up at you when you pass by. ] Hey--could you help me out?

b. face paint, round two.
[ once the horde of kids have gone off with their parents, nazuna sits back on his blanket, admiring his creations as they go wandering from place to place, occasionally waving at them when they walk by. nazuna's face is painted, too--he has a tiny little rabbit nose and whiskers, pink cheeks and a heart near his eye, and if you come to approach him, he holds up his paintbrush, tongue sticking out of his mouth, one eye winked shut as if he's admiring a masterpiece. ] What, do you want a turn~? Don't worry, nii-chan's a master artist. ★

[ nazuna doesn't scare easily. he swears! he's never scared easily in his life. it's important that he's the strong one!! with so many little siblings, he's usually busy trying to hoard them together and keep them out of trouble. but, he's going through the haunted house by himself to vet it for his younger brother (make sure it's not too scary, nii-chan!) and, though things seem fine, when the walls start closing in, nazuna panics--he's going to get crushed--!!

--right up until the slide opens up. there's a loud, girly scream as he drops into the basement, and nazuna falls off the end of the slide, rubbing his butt with his eyes closed. ] Ow, ow...

[ he opens his eyes--and there's a rubber spider right there. he shrieks and tumbles backwards. ] Ahhh--!! No, nonono, t'shcary, t'shcary, no!!

[ it seems like in his fright, he's forgotten how to speak straight. ]

[ To be fair, most people would be screaming unintelligibly when deposited down an entire floor into the darkness, so the fact that Minato can pick out some words in all of that has to walking towards the source of the noise instead of away. He's been down here for some time now, having given up on looking for a way out of the haunted house, and instead has been directing people out of the one exit to this first room to get lost in the rest of the building. ]

[ He kneels down in front of Nazuna, and keeps his voice low so that Nazuna will have to quiet down too to hear what he's saying. ]
