OCTOBER TEST DRIVE The city of Recollé... When the crypt doors creak, and the tombstones quake, spooks come out for a singing wake. Happy haunts materialize and begin to vocalize...grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize... Every year during the Halloween season, the city of Recollé comes to life with plenty of fall activities for everyone. There's something to do in every district if one were to take a look. What will you do today? I. Family fun seems to be the theme today over in Tribunal Terrace. Several tables are set up and in a semi-circle near Recollé Square with stacks of pumpkins, carving tools, paint and anything else you may need to create your own jack o'lantern. Other stations are set up for face-painting and games to win mini-sized candy bars including a ring toss, bowling, and bobbing for apples. Be careful with the apples though. They like to wiggle and jiggle with their happy little faces staring up out of the water. ...so maybe apple-bobbing is for the brave at heart. Are you the artsy type to carve a beautiful pumpkin? Are you helping to run the games (or even cheating to get more candy)? It's time to relax and let your creativity flow. II. Pumpkin-carving not your speed? Never fear, horror is here. Over in Tisse there's plenty to do for those looking for a little more adventure. Several coffee shops have harvest specials made with pumpkin, maple, and pecan flavors. Over at Flix a monster movie marathon and costume contest are taking place (with a prize of two free passes for the best monster costumes.) But the highlight of this district is the annual haunted funhouse. Anyone daring enough will find the usual spooks and scares in a haunted house, jump scares and fog machines galore. But...the house certainly didn't look so big from the outside. How did you possibly get shuffled straight to the center? No worries. This hall of mirrors will guide you out safely...if the walls closing in don't crush you first. It's a race against time as the halls narrow, and if you're one of the lucky ones you'll escape and exit through the main doors. For those not quite so lucky, the walls will stop just inches from crushing you completely before the floor drops open and you find yourself on a slide, falling through the dark and tumbling into an underground room filled with plastic skeletons, rubber spiders and more. There must be a way out, right? Hopefully you aren't alone and you can navigate the lair with a friend or two. III. Meanwhile, the rest of the city's usual hustle and bustle continues. The shopping districts are busy, students wander the sidewalks after class, and that oddly-shaped ghost appears right in the middle of the crowd. Wait, what? You could have sworn that ghost wasn't there before. Maybe you don't even believe in ghosts. You may blink a few times to clear your vision, but the faint outline of the ghost remains as a few more of them pop up around the city. They won't speak, but they will cause some trouble for anyone who gets too close whether it's by playing pranks on passerbys, stealing items and running away, sitting on a person and applying a gravitational force so they can't move or other crafty, sneaky tactics. Are the ghosts messing with you? Or are you going to find a way to mess with the ghosts? IV. As the sun begins to set, a strange sort of fog rolls in. Several citizens of the city may not even think it's unusual and others seem to capitalize on the weather. The Churchhill Downs Stables are hosting their annual haunted hayrides through Recollé Woods as soon as the sun sets. There are plenty of carts and chocobos saddled up and ready to go. Once passengers are seated the chocobos begin to trot forward into the woods as a pre-recorded ghost tour of the city takes place. The stories range from silly ones about two ghost children who like to play hide and seek in these woods to scarier ones about a jilted lover chasing her husband off a cliff at the edge of ocean. For the most part they're a bit cheesy and in good fun, but something about this haunted ride seems a bit...off. Peering into the fog you may see something strange that follows you, be it a monster or a shadow or an object. You may hear things whispering your name and you may see your greatest fear manifest right out of the fog and chase your cart through the woods. Even worse, it seems to follow you right out of the woods and back into the city. No matter where you run or where you hide, the fears from the fog will track you down and they change for every single person in the city. Will you run or will you fight? You may wish to be careful since the creatures will fight back. BONUS. With only a few short weeks left until the end of October, Retrospec's Halloween Mode is in full swing and popping up on new users' devices. Retrospec users will find their application decked out in cheerful Halloween colors, and their userpics in a randomized (work safe) costume. However, there's always a trick to each treat and this time the seasonal mode can't be turned off for new users. Notifications chime with zombie groans, a rousing game of Candy Crush must be played and beaten before you can use your device again, and the new Trick or Treat function has a few upgrades. When a user enables this function, they will be met with the phrase "Trick or Treat?" Users who select "treat" will get one virtual candy! Yay! The catch though is that they will also find themselves in a costume representing that specific candy. Should a user pick "trick", however, they will find all sorts of harmless but unpleasant things happening to them including but not limited to pranks, being splashed by vehicles driving through puddles of water, being unable to speak in anything but rhymes and other such things. None of these effects last over ten minutes, but the game will show up periodically over and over again and even giving you the option to play the game with others. [ If you think this high school senior did not get her face painted then you are. So wrong. One cheek sports a cheery jack-o-lantern, while a little bat flies right under her eye on the other side. And she may be taking the ring toss a little too seriously.

She's kind of missed every one so far, and it shows in her determined expression. ]

[ Ochako is hovering near the basin, watching in wide-eyed excitement as someone goes bobbing for apples. She's only ever seen people do it in movies before; she's been wondering if it was a real thing for years, and now her curiosity is sated. ]

Wow! I didn't think people actually went bobbing for apples in real life!

[ And it looks like she's up next! But when she steps up to give it a shot, Ochako lets out a startled squeak and immediately backs away. ]

Are they supposed to have faces? That's so creepy!

[ Haunted house!! In the spirit of the season, Ochako is ready to have a few good-natured scares. Tonight, she’s decided to don her new witch costume, brand new and handmade with her mom’s help. She thinks she makes a cute witch, but now she’s ready to get spooky!

Ah, but… she doesn’t want to go in alone, either. Half the fun is seeing your friends expressions when they get startled and laughing about it together, right? At the door, she hesitates, scanning the crowd in case anyone else is looking lonely. Her face brightens the moment she spots a friend, and soon enough Ochako is bouncing up to them with a hopeful smile. ]

Hey, hey! Want to walk through the haunted house together?

Ouch… [ She sits up with a groan. ] I didn’t think it would do something like that...

[ With a soft sigh of resignation, Ochako takes in her new surroundings. It gives her a start to find she’s sitting on a pile of plastic skeletons - and she nearly screams when she spots the spider at her ankle before realizing it’s just made of rubber - but she doesn’t find see an exit just yet. Or the person she came in with… They must have made it out okay, she decides, brushing herself off as she finds her feet. ]

I wonder if this is part of a game? [ Noticing someone else, she offers a bright smile. Hopefully they aren’t too scared? ] Do you think we’ll win if we find the way out?

[ Out of the entire haunted house experience, the trap door might have been the only scary thing so far, enough of a surprise that Minato had to clench his jaw to keep from yelling out when he'd first fallen through the floor and onto the slide speeding down into oblivion.

It's been quite some time since he'd landed in the room and walked half a dozen times around the perimeter with little luck of finding the exit, when he hears somebody else arrive with the same fate. He approaches her cautiously, not returning the smile, but looking somewhat thoughtful instead. ]

Probably. They'll have to let us out by closing time anyways. ...Or three days.

[ she's chosen a good person for this because hinata immediately salutes, a bright smile on his face. ]

Suuuuure do! [ he's not in a costume, but he has bat hair clips pinning his hair back and up off his neck, and a halloween pumpkin-themed sweater. so there is that. ] Hinata Morisawa will happily join your party, Ochako!

[ Noni's crouched a little away from the landing spot for the slide, looking intently at the rubber spider. a couple people had come and gone, but for the most part Noni had been here for about an hour. he seems to have finally been satisfied with his rubber spider viewing and notices Ochako back ]

Huh? Oh! A game? I thought haunted houses were just a walking attraction, but I guess it could be a game! [ he walks over to her with a smile and an eyeball head in his arm ] Wanna try to win together? I'm pretty good at finding navigating!

[ eijun is walking by when he spots a girl doing the ring toss--a classmate! it's ochako, who he recognizes, and he trots over to watch her, putting his hand on his forehead as if to watch her ring fly. ]

You can do it, Ochako!! I believe in you!!!

[He has been watching her for a while now, but at the thirteenth successive miss he can't keep it in anymore. Snorting an amused laugh Cutter slides up behind her side and grins through closed lips (he is still self-conscious about his teeth.)]

[It's the season for it, and while Mary isn't exactly the best person to take into a haunted house (she's kind of a fradey-cat), she's willing to go along with it when Ochako bounces up and asks. Nodding with some trepidation, she smiles at the shorter girl.]

Sure. We can. I don't mind.

[She's ready. She can do this. Or...run out screaming.]

[She wasn't the only one who had her face painted. In fact, Mabel made sure that she entire face was covered with paint! With pumpkins, ghosts, and bats everywhere, she was definitely bound to stand out from the crowd!

When she saw Ochako missing every time, the younger simply cheered her on too!]

Yeah, you can do it! Show them whose boss!

[ Your local hardworking barista is ready to serve up the seasonal beverage of your choice, complete with (simple) latte art and all the substitutions, subtractions, and add-ons your heart desires!

However, the proximity to the haunted house means that bloodcurdling screams reverberate through the cafe at unpredictable intervals... and Jamie's been sampling his own heavily caffeinated merchandise to the maximum degree that employee policy allows. So at this point his nerves are pretty much shot, and as a result he's having outsized reactions to the slightest unexpected stimulus. This could mean that yet another shriek from the haunted house, or an unusually exuberant swinging open or shut of the door, or a customer dropping a heavy backpack on the floor, or any number of other things... might cause him to drop your change all over the counter, upset the tip jar, anoint the drink preparation area with clouds of cinnamon, or (in the worst case) spill a bunch of shit everywhere.

Of course, he's endlessly apologetic about any inconvenience and wastes no time cleaning up or otherwise making things right! ]

[ The ghosts were super scary at first, but by now most of Jamie's distress is due to the fact that two of them have stolen his bag and a third is sitting placidly on his back, keeping him pinned to the sidewalk and unable to prevent them from rooting through his stuff. ]

Ahhh, no! That's my bus pass... No, please don't take my keys. And you can't even eat the snacks, can you? So why?? --Oh no, my license!

[ He doesn't remember changing his unlock settings or even installing this game to begin with, but that's life. Somehow he even managed to earn a nice virtual treat! But the instant he clicks on it...

Nothing happens.

(Oh, wait, his scarf turned stripey.)

Anyway, it's not like it's a big deal or anything, but the game keeps popping up at inconvenient times (such as right now, when he's trying to use the wireless printer in the library to print out an assignment that's due very shortly). ]

Um... excuse me. Sorry to bother you, but do you think you could help me? I must've done something to mess up my settings, but I can't figure out how to turn it off. ...And I'm having sort of a hard time with this level.

[Ami does not like the new ghosts. The old ghosts are nice, for the most part, and she felt special for being able to see them, since only a handful of people can. The new ghosts are visible to everybody (show-offs!), and although they're not remotely on the level of Poltergeists or Cenobites, they're still kind of assholes.

And now she sees them shamelessly bullying some poor rando on the street, and that is just the last straw. She strides up to the scene as intimidatingly as a smol high school girl can, and without hesitation she snatches the bag away from the two miscreants.]

Shame on you! Leave him alone!

[ Things Royce didn't really expect today: being caught in a haboob made of cinnamon. He's already swiped to pay, and now he's momentarily frozen in place by the absurdity of the scene, the brown speckles marring the cute foam design in the cup between them, the mess on the counter, and who could overlook the fine fragrant dust that's settled all over the front of his shirt?

For a second he seems a little severe—that's just the way his face looks, to tell the truth—but the first words out of his mouth are quite neutral, really, maybe even mild. ]

I. pumpkin carving

[ the table Noni occupies as he carves his jack o’lantern isn’t exactly the cleanest one. as it was his first time properly carving a pumpkin, he’s made a mess of things, with the insides of the pumpkin laid all over the table. but he’s managed to finish his carving of an alien. it's not exactly a masterpiece, with the lid not properly fitting back in, jagged lines and a gaping hole in the back. clearly he started carving one side but then had made a cut too long for the face and ended up taking off the whole part. but Noni looks satisfied with it nonetheless.

he takes a look at the pile of pumpkin filling ] I wonder if you can eat this too…

II-a. costume + coffee shop

[ having arrived early to the costume contest, Noni heads over to a coffee shop to pass the time. he seems oblivious to the light stares he gets though. it's a bit of a mystery just what kind of monster he was aiming to be when his costume is simply just a black hoodie and shorts and an eyeball head. with the head obstructing his view (it seems there are small holes in one of the eyes) the menu reading is a bit difficult, so he taps the shoulder of the person standing in front of him lightly, and with a muffled voice asks: ] Excuse me, can you tell me what’s the seasonal recommendation here?

II-b. haunted house

[ still with time in his hands, Noni had ventured into the haunted house (with his eyeball head still on). thanks(?) to his sight-obscuring head though, he doesn’t even see half the jump scares. and the ones that do interest him more on how they’re being operated, so this haunted house is definitely not doing its job correctly.

Noni isn’t able to beat the mirrors as they close in on him which was really fine by him, because he definitely enjoyed the slide down. landing in the pile of rubber with a half-yelp, half-laugh, he does a full turn around the room before taking his eyeball head off ]

Whew, that was fun! I wanna do it again!! [ he notices the stuff on the ground and crouches down to take a closer look ] Wow! I wonder what kind of spiders they are? Maybe I can take one home…

[ playing the candy crush was no sweat for Noni as he beat the game easily in minimal time. and while costumes and pranks were usually not too irksome for him, this particular prank was. after having a bad time with his “treat” costumes (as a Pocky), Noni had chosen “trick”. except now the jacket he was holding was blown up by a strong gust of wind and was stuck on a tree branch just barely out of his reach ]

Ugh! Is this payback for complaining about being too vertically long as a Pocky!? [ Noni hops up and down, trying to reach for his jacket but always being few inches short of the sleeve ]

[Unlike his creative costume, all she had going was a rather casual Witch costume she manages to create from customizing stuff from the supermarket's party section and some old clothes.

She might be a little jealous, but mostly confused.]

I. Family Fun

[Though her own children are far too old for this, Mrs. Brisby very often works with children. After mostly getting her home in order, she offered to all of her neighbors to help watch their kids (mostly to alleviate her empty nest feeling) - so a good number of parents and children should be well acquainted with her.

She may be indulging a bit with carving a pumpkin, but she'll happily smile at anyone that sits near her.]

III. Ghosts!

[Does Mrs. Brisby believe in ghosts... it's never really something she's ever considered. Wildly confronting the supernatural for the first time in her life certainly is, though, and she screams. That startles the people around her, and she tries to dart out of the way, embarrassed before the fear picks up. The creepy octopus looking thing is chasing her!]

BONUS. App Woes

[Looking a bit frustrated, Mrs. Brisby is fidgeting for the umpteenth time today with her device. The chimes of candy crush are coming from her phone, and on further inspection, she's going through her turns far too quickly to properly beat the level of candy crush that's locking her out of her own device.]

Oh, fiddlesticks!

[She seems livid!! She just wants to check on her kids' social media!!]

I am not going to buy anything for this pointless game!

[Kamui sidles up behind her while she chats with one of many pumpkin carvers. His bangs are soaking wet, glued to his drenched forehead, but he doesn't seem to care. Rather than fuss over his hair, he takes a very large bite out of a giggly apple's face.]

Whatever it is, they should give it lots and lots of teeth.

Oh no, you won't!

[The first thing that alerts Cutter is the scream, and after a brief moment where he does a double-take at the freaky glowing octopus he wastes no time shoving himself between the scared woman and the ghost. What the hell, is that thing smirking?! Cutter can't stand bullies like that at all!]

Shove off and pick on somebody the same size as you before I toss you on the grill, you wanna-be creepy punk! Shoo!

II.

[ For whatever godforsaken reason, Kaiji decides to visit the haunted house. A few bored hours of wandering the decorated streets has his skin crawling, so anything to take his mind off of his lackluster situation is worth his time, he figures.

The jump scares all succeed at kicking up his heart rate, and after tripping over a skeleton in the fog-dense maze, he's ready to leave. But when he circles back for the exit, he ends up in the hall of mirrors; and then takes a tumble, screams echoing through the long sliding tunnel.

In the dark underground, he begins to feel truly unnerved. It's a step up from a regular haunted house, for sure--though he's not certain he knows what constitutes a regular haunted house, anyway. As he stands, dusting himself off, he glances around the creepy basement, grumbling all the while. ]

Is--is anyone else in here? [ He waits three seconds, and without an immediately and resounding response, he takes to cursing. ] Shit! Those fuckers! This is just taking it too far! Isn't a haunted house supposed to be fun? Where the fuck is the exit...


III.

[ Kaiji is seeing things.

He wonders if it's the booze; his brain cells can't quite be deteriorating that fast, can they? But the illusions continue, the poltergeists even going far enough to knock him to the ground in the middle of the bustling city streets. One prank is one too many--his frustrations at the quiet ignorance of the people around him and the increasing teasing of the ghosts winds him up.

He's had enough. He can't confirm his suspicions like this, and he hates to be alone in his torment.

He finds you--whoever you are--and grabs you by the shoulders, flipping you around to face him. His panicked expression pleads for understanding. ]

Tell me you're seeing what's going on around here! It's not just me, right? You've seen them, right? The ghosts!

[ Shamelessly, tears will well up in his eyes. ]

If this is a prank, this is just cruel...

[ Booker is minding his business-- After all, he's lived in Recolle for roughly a year by now. With his office being within walking distance of his small apartment, he's simply taking his usual stroll home. But he's forced to stop when he hears a weird groaning noise coming from his pocket. ]

The hell?

[ He pulls out his phone, finding that a zombie noise has replaced itself as his text notification. Booker knits his brow, swiping the lock screen. ]

That's odd.

[ The screen opens up to a game of... Candy Crush? Okay, now he really has to stop. Booker tries to tap out of the game. ]

I never even downloaded this, what is it--

[ Tap. Tap... TAPTAPTAPTAPTAP ]

Stupid... Damn... Smart phone, I knew I shoulda' stuck with the flip phonedamnit!.

[ He can't close out of it.

Which ends in Booker rolling his eyes, sighing, and playing the level. ]

[It's not as if Booker is a technophobe, but Rosalind can't remember the last time she saw him hunched over his phone. Although, to be fair, it's not as if they spend all their time together, so perhaps this is simply a new side of him.

It's a side he's going to have to put away for the moment, though; she's impatient as she strides (almost perfectly, she's only a little breathless, her foot aches only a bit) towards him. But oh, I never even downloaded this, and she raises an eyebrow.]

III. fuckin ghosts everywhere man

[Dr. Handsome likes to think of himself as a rational man. Ghosts aren't real, obviously, and anyone who thinks they are is a gullible fool. But today, just today, he's been seeing strange things out the corner of his eye. He's dismissed them, of course; the human mind is notoriously easy to deceive, especially when you work shifts this long and drink this much coffee.

It's as he's driving home from the hospital that he can't ignore it anymore. He's speeding down the road, when someone - something - appears out of the fog directly in front of his car. He swerves to avoid it, but this sends him toward the sidewalk, and he swerves the other way to avoid a fire hydrant and nearby pedestrian (you, quite likely!), and then he spins out.

He regains control a split second later, though the car - a blue late-model Cadillac sedan - is now facing the wrong way, and traffic has stopped behind him. Alex steps out of the car, looking back wide-eyed at the spot where the thing appeared. There's nothing there now, of course, and uh ... it doesn't seem to have occurred to him to apologize to the person he almost ran over. When he addresses them, it's to ask-]

What was that? You saw it, didn't you?

[ Jamie himself has had a long day replete with coffee, though rather than having anyone's lives in his hands, he just had their coffee orders (and his own GPA). His reflexes are iffy at the best of times, though, so although he notices the large and very lethal vehicle coming toward him in what seems like it should maybe have been plenty of time to try jumping out of the way, he finds that all he can do is stare at it as he's quite literally caught in the headlights...

Though he doesn't actually remember his knees buckling or the car swerving to miss him, he presently becomes aware that he's sitting on the sidewalk, and that any noises he should be able to hear are blocked out by his pulse pounding in his ears and kind of a weird high-pitched tone that he's pretty sure exists only inside his head. In the next instant, it occurs to him that he's all in one piece, with no crushed organs or shattered bone anywhere, which is super!

In the instant after that, someone's talking to him! (Ah, he can hear again.) ]

[If anything- Rei keeps to doing what she was there for. Part time jobs to keep things paid for and eventually letting her check out the things going on. Normally the collage girl would head home and get to work on her essays and studying for her classes. She did promise that school would be taken seriously when she left home so that was a thing and a half.. Either way she's helping out at random spots.

Eventually she heads out to the Haunted House and inside. Mostly laughing at some of the sillier moments that gets the people infront of her. Although at some point she's pulled into the Hall of Mirrors.]

"..This can't be a part of the house...?"

[Rei isn't looking to sure on this just yet..and the walls are starting to close in...]

[The ghost gets no more then a glance as Rei heads out and seems to be in a slight hurry...and not paying attention as there is a earbud hanging from her jacket as the crowd surges around her. Obviously there is something more important then that.

But the ghost starts messing with her as she gets close- stealing her headphones and then sitting on her. Care to help a flailing teen who is seriously confused?]

"Hey- Give that back! What is up with all this werd stuff...?"
