JUNE TEST DRIVE The city of Recollé. The kids are out for the summer and the weather's just fine. The sun's shining brightly, not a cloud in the clear gray sky. Everything seems at peace and citizens are out and about, smiling to one another and enjoying each other's company. Oh, and this thing (complete with cardboard cut-out) has currently taken the place of the founders' statues in Recollé Square. But that's probably not a big deal.  What will you do today? I. What is this thing? Why is this thing here? For those of you in Tribunal Terrace today you may wish to investigate the five-foot-tall spinning wheel. How did it even get here? And where did the statues of the founders go? Even if you cannot answer those questions, it's hard to ignore the urge to give it a spin. Check out those colors go 'round and 'round. Depending on what number you land on, you will find a notification pop up on your phone with a short list of…words. Are these supposed to be qualifications? Weird. That was a waste of time. However, the moment you walk away you will find yourself accosted by various recruiters wherever you go, congratulating you on your impressive resumé and leading you to an office in Chata. Their offices have been equipped with tabletop-sized spinning wheels much like the one in Recollé Square that will spin 'round and 'round, determining the position you qualify for. Are you ready to show how these traits make you the perfect applicant? It looks like you have time to consult with your fellow candidates before your turn comes. Or perhaps you've managed to resist spinning that wheel. The recruiters absolutely love your willpower and determination and want you to join their team! For those who can resist, they will still find themselves whisked away by recruiters to the same office and thrown straight into training to prepare for interviewing their neighbors. Recruiters will set up pairs of interviewers and applicants, leaving them alone to ask the hard-hitting questions and pick the most qualified candidate. Do your best and beat out the rest! It's your time to shine. II. Just because school is out for the summer doesn't mean Apparassage is quiet. Students and faculty alike are bustling about already preparing for the next school year. Campus tours of Recollé University run every two hours, and there are open house tours of the local elementary, middle and high school. Perhaps you're a future student exploring the campus and getting to know your future classmates. Maybe you're faculty or a student guide wrangling the kids and keeping them in line. Or you just might be one of the unfortunate ones who have found yourself with six weeks of summer school. However, no matter where you find yourself in this district things get a little tricky when you're ready to leave for the day. The sidewalks outside of the buildings have all disintegrated, revealing a large void leading to nowhere beneath your feet. Without a clear path it seems impossible to escape, but stacked at the entrances of every doorway are large tiles with the letters of the alphabet carefully printed on them. When you look across the devoid path, you may notice you have a partner in a similar position with their own stack of letters. Get ready to expand your vocabulary. Building a bridge of connecting words may be your only chance of getting home before sunset. Strangely, as the letters are laid out they seem to suspend mid-air enough to hold your weight as you make your way carefully across this pit. Balance and precision are key in this game. The stack floats along behind you as you cross the void, letters seemingly adding to the pile to provide more materials to build. But like all games, there can be only one winner. Those who clear their letters first will arrive outside of the district safely, free now to come and go as they please. For those who do not clear their stack in time, you might have luck jumping from word to word to cross the finish line. Try as you might, if this is the method you follow, the moment you land on the winning word to leave the district the letters will glitch out, sending you plummeting into the void and landing on a long slope down to the bottom. Upon landing, you will see a series of chutes and ladders one can use to climb back up. Some ladders lead back to Apparassage. Some lead straight into Tisse, and some even lead to unexpected places. Where will you end up? The journey is up to you now. III. The days are longer, the nights are shorter, the sun is shining and it's noticeably warmer. Isn't it a perfect time for a summer potluck? The citizens of Recollé seem to think so and have all gathered today in Hollingberry Field with friends and loved ones to share food and fun. Kids chase after each other in friendly games of tag and hide-and-seek while other attendants mingle with one another, piling plates of food and sharing with their neighbor. Why, even Mayor Mayer is out today for this summer kickoff with his lovely red Chocobo, Seabiscuit. As the evening begins to wind down, however, there's a startled cry from the Mayor as he realizes someone has kidnapped his beloved pet from right under his nose. Was it you? How about you? Everyone has become a suspect and it's up to you to solve whodunnit. The Mayor provides everyone with a pen and a pad of paper divided into three sections for a suspect, a method, and a location. Grab a friend (or even a group of strangers) and get ready to interrogate each other to crack this case. (With a little looking, however, it's easy to see that Seabiscuit's merely wandered down the hill away from the park. But maybe it's better not to tell the Mayor. He seems very adamant about this game.) For anyone who manages to solve the case, the Mayor will be immensely grateful and reward you with a valuable prize! Congratulations! However, for anyone who fails to solve the puzzle, or even anyone found guilty of this heinous crime, by order of the Mayor you will be subjected to jail time for a full half an hour. (The Mayor can't stay too mad at his citizens. He loves them all.) IV. A nice, leisurely stroll through the entertainment district of Tisse seems to be in order. Summer sales are aplenty and now's the perfect time to shop 'til you drop. On the other hand, that doesn't seem to be the only thing dropping in Tisse. Do you hear that? Perhaps it is easy to ignore the sounds of stone crashing to the ground. Construction isn't unusual in this district. You think maybe you passed an ongoing demolition on your way inside a shop. But the crash happens again, and again, and again, a loud string of booms growing closer and closer. Are those buildings tipping into one another? Or is it your imagination? You may not have time to answer while the string of events is put into motion. A crane swings overhead, knocking into a well-placed boulder that begins to roll down the street. Cranes, pulleys and wires move in sync as the ball rolls right toward you. Will you run? Will you collide right into the next set of traps? You may recall learning about this type of experiment once upon a time, coming to realize the elaborately planned Rube Goldberg machine spans the entirety of the city. Maybe you're one of the lucky ones and you find a safe shop to dive into to escape. Or perhaps your sole focus is to run and get as far as you can, failing to notice that the large boulder herds you right to the end of the district and into a caged-in area. Make yourself comfortable. Someone from the outside will have to free you. But hey, maybe you aren't alone in this trap. Misery loves company, doesn't it? BONUS. The Retrospec app is at it again, just as useless as it's always been. After downloading to your device and allowing you to upload a profile picture, the app seems to take over your phone. Any time you open your phone to use it, a splash screen appears prompting you to pick one of the brightly colored wedges (or one of the two grayed out ones.) It's time to exercise your brain and buff your trivia stats. Answering a question from your selected category will allow you to use your phone once again, but if you get it wrong? Retrospec will encourage you not to give up and try again. ...or, you know, you could ask someone to help figure out the answer. Hey, that person looks like they're bursting with knowledge! Perhaps it's best to see if they can help you stop this madness. As usual, any attempt to get the company to reply are futile. Once a question has been answered correctly, phones will return to their usual functionality until the next time it settles into idle mode. Welcome to the recolle test drive meme! [Retrospec had a lot going for it at first. It was cool and creepy and mysterious, and obviously it had appeared on his phone because he was destined to solve the mystery of it. And he's still enjoying that aspect, of course, he's spent days combing through each network post to try and find clues, but he'd also gotten distracted by the trivia game.

[ summer sales? best time of the year! even though ann doesn't want to become a model, she's definitely still into fashion and her fashion sense is killin' it. she's pretty much splurged at the towers, holding several bags on each of her arms, some small and some big. looks like someone's having a good shopping spree! though...at some point, ann doesn't pay attention to where she's going, and she trips down the bottom of one of the flights of stairs. it's not a long fall, but it still hurts, and some of her bags go flying and land on the ground in front of her. ]

[ as someone who generally enjoys games of chance, mary stares up at the gigantic wheel in the middle of tribunal terrace with her arms folded, toe tapping as she briefly considers not spinning it. it is, after all, stupid. it is, almost definitely, some kind of ridiculous trick involving the city that they're in.

of course she spun the wheel anyway. it landed her with a strange set of words, and now, apparently, a job interview? to be a singer how is she supposed to be a singer with "the perfect alibi", for one, and for second-- ] This is the stupidest job interview I've ever heard of in my life--how many times do I have to tell you I don't need a job before you back off?!

[ she argues with the recruiter for a minute, who just smiles at her and shuts the door in her face. mary stamps one tiny perfect high heel in her frustration and whirls around, pigtails making her look even more theatrical as she stomps over to a chair and drops into it with a huff. approach with caution. ]

I, part II.

[ under a slightly different set of circumstances, however, mary gets tossed into one of the practice interviews. her task is to show how she can be a "politician" with "a dollar, the perfect alibi, can’t lie, indecisive" as the traits she's supposed to be selling.

now that mary can sort of pull off. (these words are probably just guidelines--no one has to know if she can't lie if she's just really good at it.) she's settled at a table for an interview holding--is that a pack of cards? ] If you want to know what I can do with a dollar, let's play a game.

They spend most of the time on the way to recruitment office fussing loudly that they already have a job and that they don't need any of this bullshit. However, when it becomes clear that they are actually trying to beat out other candidates... well... ]

[ Pitou stares at you while saying this, completely blithe and unintimidated by how this might possibly hurt or offend someone. Then they smile, toothy and aggressive. They're going to win this job. ]

JAIL
[ This is... not Pitou's first time in the Recolle jail. Last time they were here it was for assaulting a journalist. They were not happy about it then, and they're not happy about it now, stalking around their tiny cell irritably, arms crossed over their chest. ]

I have rights you know! I'll make you pigs regret this. I'll sue every single member of this city's government and retire early on all that settlement money!

[ They continue their stalking despite the cell being crowded with others who had the misfortune to not figure out the chocobo mystery quickly enough. ]

MOUSETRAP
[ Pitou shoves an old lady out of their way as they dive forward to narrowly miss a trap falling towards them. Rather than irritated, when they lift their head and look over their shoulder, there's an excited gleam in their eye. Now this is fun... How many people can they get caught while they themselves continue on unscathed?

A wicked game, but Pitou Blythe is here to play it, grinning nastily all the way. ]

I. trivia bonus

[ The thing about this, besides being extremely suspect and something Kon does not remember putting on his phone in the first place, is that he's... not really that bothered by the random trivia. He's lost hours to falling down the rabbit hole of clicking related articles on sites, and is voracious for knowledge at large.

So, for the most part, he does fine. Rick Astley occasionally serenades him when it's really obscure, but he's answering most of the questions correctly whenever he wakes his phone up again.

But if he hears someone getting serenaded nearby, he looks up from his own phone and gives it a little waggle. ] Need some help?

II. whodunnit

[ Kon looks at Seabiscuit, warking softly in the distance.

Kon looks at the pad of paper he's been unceremoniously given.

Kon rolls the sucker in his mouth from one side, to the other, and heaves a sigh, before scratching the clicky end of the pen against his temple. Well, all things considered, this is pretty normal, isn't it? So he just watches the chocobo continue its trek into the great unknown of the grey city, and then reads over all of the names, places, and methods that have been listed. ]

I'm not sure what I like more, alien abduction or black magic. Both seem pretty likely for this kind of scenario. [ No one said he couldn't play along. ]

III. rube goldberg

[ The hilarious thing about this is that, during the last days of school in the university's engineering department, they'd... him and his team had made a Rube Goldberg to pass the time. Just a little one, out of spare parts they'd had lying around.

So this is more than a bit much.

At first, he doesn't notice the rumbling, too focused listening to his phone serenading him - look, even he doesn't know about snail teeth, all right? - but then he feels it. Pausing, he frowns, looks up, scans the area, and then promptly double takes when he sees the boulder rolling down the street. It's completely against logic, and he has to jump off the street to avoid getting run over, like hell he's pulling an Indiana Jones right now.

Sorry if he knocks into you, but, also, it was for your own good, sending you both into a shop's entryway like that. ]

[The sudden abyss was an unpleasant surprise easily balanced by the nerdy game it then required. There were few things that Keito loved more than words and of all the hurdles to have, he was glad to luck out with Scary Scrabble. Or he would be if his partner appreciated the dictionary as much as he did.]

That's wrong. You can't count that. It's just plain incorrect. E-C-S-T-A-S-Y. Ecstasy. There's no 'X'. There's no 'Z' either! Fix it before you doom us both. If I die in a pit because of your ineptitude I'll never forgive you. I'll haunt your house. And fix that tile while you're at it. The 'E' is crooked.

MOUSE TRAP

[Once upon a time Keito had been an athletic type. Nowadays his exercise was running up and down stairs and strolling through the residence halls. He had not been prepared for fleeing from boulders and took pride in the fact that he had somehow managed to survive four surprise rollouts.

Now, facing his fifth, he was done. His bones ached and his lungs felt as if they were on fire. Even his glasses were fogging up! His patience was gone the moment he saw the fifth boulder drop at the end of the street. Groaning, he glares and–

–slumps against a streetlamp, panting heavily.]

I give up. The game is rigged. I'll die if I keep running and I'll die if I stop running. What difference does it make?!

[Yes. He's become so fed up he's talking to himself, or maybe the boulder? Honestly, he's still not quite sure this is real. But if it is at least he'll die sitting. ]

III.

[And Magilou thought she was bad at finding things. Well, she was still bad at finding things. She once lost her headphones while she was listening to them. She wasn't even sure how that worked. But if the mayor wanted to set a losing things record, then he was making a good effort.]

"Why, how dare you throw such heinous accusations at me! What did I ever do to deserve such suspicion!?!" [There was a very long list of things, but that was besides the point for her. She frankly was somewhat offended at this piece of paper. And thus, she was rather vocal in her complaints about it.] "How do you even know it's stolen?! It could have just wandered off somewhere. I'm pretty sure Chocobos do that."

"You know what? No. I am not going to tolerate such criminal treatment. You can find this thing yourselves. Just, remove me from that list and count me out of your little mystery game." [Thus, Magilou walked off, although actually she just went off to the side only slightly away from the event after making an entire, dramatic scene. She wasn't that offended, after all. Of course, it is perfectly possible that someone could follow her...]

IV.

[The slow descent of reality into madness was for Magilou, like watching a slow motion car crash. The perfect vision of impending doom so profoundly evident of the human condition. Except she was actually involved in all this mess, which made it all significantly less fun. She had observed some of the... oddities, going on around her, but frankly refrained from commenting. They weren't affecting her life, and no one brought them up to her. The weird sounds and the moving buildings were just, yeah okay they made no sense but she'd just roll with it.]

But then, the abnormalities did come to her. Right now, just as she was stepping out of a store, she found herself greeted with the newest piece of this puzzle. A giant boulder rolling down the street. And thus, she stepped back through the automatic doors, and just watched. Watched people flee in terror, their screams bringing a small smile to her face. Oh, this was going to be one of those days wasn't it? She stepped back out, looking down at still rolling boulder heading down the road.]

"Well, that just happened." [She said, at a loss for any meaningful statements. What had just transpired had basically just come from nowhere. Still, this oddity had not been able to stop from attracting her attention nonetheless. here. And this time, she was involved, given the fact that it had nearly killed her just now. Thus, Magilou embarked on a quest to follow the giant rolling boulder to its unknown destination and watch people scream in terror for her own entertainment. And by quest, she of course meant leisurely strolling after it and maybe finding something interesting going on at, wherever this ended up taking her.]

[Following close behind her is Katherine, her hand shoved into a pocket as she trudged behind the actress, only a little disturbed by how calmly she was taking this. Only a little, though: she had known Magilou long enough to at least see that she was a little detached to some things.]

It really did happen, didn't it? Its like some sort of messed up child's game or something like that.

[She shakes her head, a light grimace on her face as yells echo from down the street. If it weren't for how insanely impossible this all was, Kath would have been a little more freaked out.

She looks down the street, squinting to see how much farther the boulder had to go before hopefully stopping.]

[Okay. There's a wheel in the center of the town. There's a wheel, and it's bright, and it's colorful, and how do you expect him to stay away from it, for god's sakes?! It's a wheel that's begging to be spun, and Asuka isn't the type of person to let begging go unanswered.

Being caught up between all of the recruiters is a surprise, but he can go with the flow, chatting with them as they bustle him toward Chata. What an impressive resumé, you say? Oh, yes, thank you, he's been working on it for several years! (Someone remind him whose resumé they think is his? Because he sure doesn't know!

There's another spin of the wheel, this one not as large but just as colorful, and before he knows it Asuka's been pushed into a waiting room and left, a little windswept from the rush but the grin still bright on his face as he drops into a seat.]

Crazy day, huh? What'd they grab you for? Apparently I am, and I quote, "a beefcake of the highest caliber."

[Honestly, it doesn't matter how many times you've seen the trope, or how many times you've pointed out that all a character needs to do is dive sideways to escape a rolling boulder. When you see something large and spherical rolling toward you, you run, whether that's in terror or laughing your head off, as is the case with one Asuka Citèis, running down the street in a dramatic, overblown fashion, pumping his arms and interspersing his laughter with mock yells.

Does he notice the rest of the Rube-Goldberg machine going on around him? Some of it (wait, did a basketball really just roll along a chute made out of pool noodles overhead?). But not enough to realize that he's being driven into a trap. Asuka's too busy being silly with the boulder to realize what he's about to run into until it's too late, yelping for real as he crashes straight into the caged-in enclosure.

Whoops. Good job, Asuka. He glances around at the other inhabitants of the cage, then gives a wide shrug.]

Gotta say, that whole thing with the boulder was pretty fun up until the ending. 9/10, I'd run it again if they gave me a way to get back up to start. What about you?

So when he finally leaves the lab, he had meant to go home and sleep for the first time in probably, oh, two weeks? But no, there's a gaping pit where the ground used to be, and while he's not sure, it might just be connected to the experiments he's been running the past few weeks.

So now he's out here, obstructing the little standing area that exists around the pit and the tile paths, with an open suitcase literally full of sci-fi-looking lab equipment. If he hears anyone walk near him, he'll just give them the rote speech without even bothering to look at them: ]

Goro is loving it. He's never been happier to go on a campus tour, to explore around, and all of a sudden be tasked with spelling out bridges and potentially throwing others into pitch darkness--

until he decides to use someone else's words since it's right there why not and finds himself plummeting down a slope, ending up literally anywhere else. Oh, and this doesn't happen just once, it happens a fair bit, because having discovered that he ends up in different places after he takes very willing plunges down the hole now Goro's found a new mystery and that is the probability of landing in one district over the others.

[A whodunnit is the classic mystery to solve, and being a rookie detective Goro is all over this.

He also saw Seabiscuit down the hill, um. But it's better to play along! Sure! Yeah. It's-- it's funner like this, sure, and considering the Mayor himself asked for his expert help (he's ignoring the fact that everyone has been tasked with this duty) it would go against his pride to simply discard a challenge!

... Besides, there's no easy way to inform the Mayor that this game is for naught, since his beloved Chocobo is down the way. Catch Goro being oddly enthused in interrogating the people on the list (besides himself, naturally) and trying very hard not to look where Seabiscuit is.]

[A look of true bafflement settles upon Adamska's face as he eyes the five-foot-tall spinning wheel perched here in the middle of Terrace Tribunal. It seems that the Hollywood star isn't the only one standing here eyeing the odd spectacle happening here today. It seems that the elegant statues have been replaced by this gaudy nightmare comprised of loud bright colors. Try as he might to pry himself away from such an oddity, Adamska finds himself edging closer to the spinner. He silently observes this farce with a calculating gaze as he circles around the spectators ever so slowly.]

Just what sort of game is this?

[He mumbles quietly as he takes up a pensive pose. There's a hint of curiosity within those pale blue eyes, one that borderlines on mischief as he inches closer. The urge to take the plunge and play along with this absurd game confounds him. Normally, Romanov would simply ignore such childish affairs but today he's feeling particularly spry. That's why the dapper gentleman steps forward to play. He reaches up to grab ahold one of the prongs before using all of his might to spin it. The spinner goes round and round until eventually landing upon the number nine. In that instance, Adamska's cellphone suddenly vibrates.]

Hm? [A confused hum escapes Adamska as he pries out his phone from the pockets of his tan trenchcoat. Be damned if it's the middle of summer, Adamska is dressed handsomely in a crisp white long sleeved shirt, dark gray waistcoat with matching slacks and black heeled leather boots. Of course his signature red ribbon is tied neatly at the end of his ponytail and his matching red tie sits neatly around his neck. He should be sweating up a storm in such attire but he's as cool as an icecube.

Another curious hum escapes the movie star as he eyes the notification upon his phone. It seems some strange app just suddenly downloaded itself upon his cellphone. How odd.]

Open, self-entitled, fishnet stocking, six-pack?

III. Where's Seabiscuit?

[A humorous scoff escapes Adamska once he caught sight of that overgrown drumstick beside the Mayor. Of all the ridiculous shit happening here in Recollé, it all takes a backseat to the fact the Mayor is prancing around town with a chicken as his prized sidekick. It's enough to make Adamska roll his eyes and question the thin fabric of his sanity. From what he last remembered, horses exist. Not these strange chicken-horse hybrids. It's bizarre enough to see the standard yellow ones prancing around but that red one is downright absurd. So imagine how humored Adamska is to know that dear Seabiscuit has suddenly vanished. He idly hopes someone took the damn things out to pasture and shot it dead but that's rather cruel, no?

Hopefully someone ate the cuss instead. That would tickle his funny bone like no other.]

Wait, I'm a suspect?!

[There's obvious dismay in Admaska's tone once the security guards block his path. It seems that Seabiscuit's disappearance is more serious than he previously thought. An annoyed huff escapes the stately old codger as he snatches the notepad out of the guard's hand. He's a little too damn old to be playing "Where's Waldo?", don't you think? Adamska bites back a swear as he's forced to play along with this shenanigan.]

I don't even like chicken!

[He's agitated, woefully agitated.]


IV. Rube Goldberg

[Adamska nearly jumped out of his skin once he heard the collision. He was out in the middle of Tisse today just to enjoy a leisure stroll when the loud boom shook him to his core. He whipped around quickly in the direction of crash only to find himself staring at the enormous boulder quickly rolling down the hill with alarming speed. Despite all his years being an action star upon the big screen, nothing quite prepared Adamska for something likened to this. He stares at the incoming boulder with wide eyes. His mind is screaming at him to run but the old gentleman is frozen in place in complete shock.

It's not everyday that Adamska finds himself in this kind of predicament and to be frank, he's not in the right mindset for this kind of nonsense. Had this been the set of Sons of Liberty, one of his Oscar winning films, then maybe he would've reacted witth finesse and speed. However, he was just out for a god damn stroll and now theres an enormous boulder about several seconds away from crushing him.

This isn't fair! Not fair at all!

The reality of it all hits Adamska a little too late. There's no way he can escape the incoming boulder unless someone actually yanks him out of the way in Time but who. would possibly save this Hollywood legend from starring in the obituary of tomorrow's papers? Hopefully someone! That sequel film he's working on will never come to fruition if the leading man dies here.]

Okay, so that's a disappointment too. He gets the number 10, but the puzzle that comes with it is nearly indecipherable. Decoder ring? Defuse bombs? That sounds ominous. But--]

Besides, chocobos are cute. Doesn't that bird's face just scream "the rest of this wacko game can wait"?

[Li-Na only wanted to pick up some school supplies. And maybe locate a shop selling dance equipment. Instead, she is running from a giant bolder.]

[Glancing over her shoulder, Li-Na gulps and starts looking for options. Though she has good endurance as a dancer, she is not a runner. And if she trips she could potentially injure herself. So outrunning the boulder is out of the question. That leaves hiding from it.

And there is a promising looking storefront coming up. Putting on a burst of speed, Li-Na shoves open the door of the store and ducks inside, praying the boulder won't decide to change directions and smash through after her.

Thankfully it doesn't.
