AU AGE: Somewhere in the ballpark of 30-ish!
AU OCCUPATION: President and CEO of Veil Retrieval Specialists, Incorporated
BLURB:

❖ Born the daughter of a wealthy international art dealer
❖ Grew up generally (read: disgustingly) well-to-do, but to a set of parents who always went above and beyond to instill in her an appreciation for hard work and personal independence
❖ Orphaned at age fifteen when, while on a vacation with her parents, their living arrangements caught fire and the roof collapsed. Carmen was able to escape the blaze but her parents tragically were not
❖ Unsurprisingly, is pretty badly claustrophobic as a result
❖ Spent a handful of years being raised by close friends and business associates of her parents, who then continued to manage her parents' estate while she pursued her studies
❖ Worked several years as an insurance claims investigator, ultimately developing a reputation as an expert at recovering stolen items
❖ Was badly injured on a case, leading to a medical leave of absence and her move to Recollé to recuperate, at her former guardian's urging
❖ Suffered from cabin fever for a while before eventually deciding to stop looking at her leave of absence as a burden and opting to instead treat the time off as an opportunity
❖ Assembled Veil Retrieval Specialists, Inc., which combined her personal work experience with her family's resources and connections to create an elite training organization that teaches other people to do the job that she once did herself
❖ Is never seen not wearing red in some capacity
❖ Tends to channel her personal wealth toward philanthropic goals and probably has a foundation of some variety
❖ Is an avid supporter of local museums, art galleries, libraries, and historical societies
❖ Has almost certainly funded at least a few scholarships
❖ Always wins at Trivial Pursuit


LOOKING FOR:

❖ FRIENDS, because the downside of her ambitious career-oriented lifestyle is that she hasn't really cultivated a lot of meaningful personal relationships prior to settling down in Recollé
❖ Business colleagues
❖ Are you going to school on scholarship? MAYBE IT'S NAMED AFTER HER
❖ No seriously she loves kids and if you are a kid then she probably wants to aggressively encourage you to follow your dreams and shoot for the stars

I MEAN AT THE MOMENT IT'S MOSTLY JUST FOR KICKS but the thought of a slow descent into "hold on, you'll never believe what i just remembered stealing" has been making me laugh for at least a week or two now

I MEAN half the fun of playing a wealthy philanthropist is the potential to know a lot of people for a lot of reasons so I'm sure we could come up with something!

It's basically like are you interested in:

1) art
2) history
3) geography
4) education
5) kids
6) Trivial Pursuit

because any of the above is an easy opportunity.

MEET MY FOREVER GIRL

The hilarious thing is I've actually toned down her ambition in comparison to canon, in which she reached the top of her profession at age 18, promptly abandoned it to start a new profession, and then reached the top of that one before she was 28

Carmen is a little bit intense when it comes to ambition to say the least

Miller absolutely would want to play super-accountant and help her manage her money but despite thinking she was mad hot he'd probably feel the "Way out of my league"s pretty hard. And I love doing that to this loser.

I MEAN IF HE'S GOT THE CREDENTIALS she could easily have hired him to be a business manager or a staff accountant or something, the nice thing about her having Multiple Enterprises™ is that she'd accordingly need a fair amount of staff to support that

Oh, Carmen. WOW.

Um. I'd love for Carmen to have run into Yukiko in one way or another. maybe she briefly stayed at Yukiko's family B&B for whatever reason and they talked a little. Honestly I think it'd be cool if she just ran into her one day back in middle school and said something like "You'd look good in red" (something that happens in her canon) and Yukiko just...did it.

Also please aggressively encourage her to follow her dreams, that'd be such a great thing, just having a connection like Carmen.

Does the B&B by any chance have a reputation for like...being particularly relaxing or therapeutic or something along those lines? Because if she's recuperating from an injury I could definitely see her trying out the B&B as like an "okay I need to forcibly extract myself from all the stressors of things I honestly want to be doing and just make myself slow down and Actually Recuperate" kind of thing.

But I love the thought of the middle school thing too! It's very canonical for Carmen to sort of weirdly take kids under her wing and try to bring out the best in them so I'm all for it every opportunity I can get.

When I was writing it up I was a little concerned that there may be some suspension of disbelief problems, like this kind of reads like a "so what are you, literally Batman" backstory, BILLIONAIRE PLAYBOY CEO PHILANTHROPIST

But man, motivational speeches and guest on Sesame Street is like THE BEST IDEA, I just love the thought of her being this sort of public icon because of how well it translates from her canon status of being THAT ONE THIEF THAT LITERALLY EVERYONE KNOWS ON SIGHT, NO MATTER WHERE IN THE WORLD YOU GO

allow me to share an actual canon example of carmen sandiego's attitude on being praised/loved/idolized/recognized for her personal merits:



FOR REAL SHE LOVES KIDS and more importantly loves encouraging kids to reach their fullest potential and helping them to bring out their best traits to the fullest

Please idolize her all day long, I would adore this.

We could definitely work something out! Depending on how her AU solidifies she might not be doing much Crime Investigating™ on a personal level, but I am all about finding excuses to cultivate CR so we can definitely come up with something even if it isn't strictly crimebusting!

but ahhh idk how exactly to get cr insomuch as i think chiyo would probably just fangirl carmen to heaven and back? chiyo's very into art and animation, and it sounds like carmen is big in the art scene in a lot of ways. she'll also probably be applying for 232397 scholarships soon since she'll be a senior in the next school year

Hahaha, a lot of people want to fangirl/role model her, I guess! And man, I am all for that, it's really in line with her canon as far as her being this kind of iconic figure that most everyone is aware of. So yeah, I think we can definitely work something out!
