AU NAME: Naoto Shirogane
AU AGE: 16
AU OCCUPATION: Student and aspiring detective.

BLURB:

I'm still working on my AU for Naoto! The main plot points for her character that I want to include:

*She's earlier on in her character development, which makes her more standoffish and independent, far more concerned with solving mysteries and being taken seriously than doing kid things.
*She's still presenting as male when out in public. I'm not sure why, I may use something similar to her canon justification where a police officer talked down about her aspirations of becoming a detective, and seemed to blame her being a girl. If anyone finds out, she likely won't conceal that she's a girl, but she would prefer to not publicize it.
*She wants to be a detective still! There will likely be a similar motivation to canon (her family worked as detectives and she loves detective fiction) but I also kind of want to give her something more personal too? Kind of like Dojima's "car that killed my wife" case.
*She might actually be a little more zealous about it than before.

Naoto is intelligent and analytical but very much not good with people. A hard nut to crack!

LOOKING FOR: Anything, really! Family, old enemies, friends... Naoto pre-development is going to be very standoffish and difficult to get along with or befriend, so anyone who has already succeeded at cracking that nut would be lovely.
OPTIONAL ENABLE ME: None for now! Maybe depending on how things go, a Geass or (god help me) an idol?

It's entirely possible that maybe Yukiko and Naoto met and are at least on friendly terms via study groups. Yukiko's about to graduate, but she's in advanced classes that I imagine a budding genius detective might be involved in. Or study groups and the like.

Plus, Yukiko's really patient. And if Naoto's still being from Japan is a thing, there's the immigrant connection.

I imagine she's not an immigrant, but her parents were! (If that's a thing... need to read more into the setting).

Study groups would be great though! It's probably just enough connection where Yukiko might not have figured out that Naoto's not a boy yet?

they'd definitely have crossed paths then, I think. Naoto might actually be taking classes at the local college.

Hmmm. Given that Naoto is a bit of an over-achiever and possibly already taking classes at college, and Chloe is a recent HS grad who's taking the classic year off to save up for their first year in college, is it possible for them to have gotten to know each other through SAT prep courses?

AU Chloe, like her canon version, can be reasonably persistent with diffident ones, and is prone to teasing, maybe the sort to try and get a fellow student out there a bit more, even if it's just for coffee after a cram session.

That could work! I'm not super canon familiar but that character type seems like she'd be right up the "befriending Naoto" alley. Though if it's just study/prep class, Naoto would probably be friendly and cordial enough but not friendly per se, unless Chloe specifically pushed for that.

Aspiring detective...in that case, I can offer a police officer who'll be "Not this Naoto guy again" every time they bump into each other during an investigation or something! Maybe one day he'll realize that he's been wrong about the guy part...

That would be hilarious! I imagine that Naoto's family probably pulled some strings to get her (or "him," as she'd present herself) an internship or some helping role at the precinct... or maybe she just shows up, listening to police scanners and tries to nose around investigations even when she's not wanted.

They could know each other passingly through the school or maybe they live in the same neighborhood (urban apartments, etc)? Elizabeth's husband is a detective so that may be motivation for them to get CR — and to expand to Bigby as well!

Naoto might actually live by herself the more I think about it, if her grandfather lives out in the suburbs but she wants to go to school in the city. In an apartment complex could work well.

But Elizabeth being married to a detective would be an excellent way to get CR! She wants to know all the detectives and investigators. All of them.

Ryoji, being the shameless flirt he is, might be terrible for her if she's presenting male, but what do you think about the two having talked together before online where identity isn't really a big deal? He's been travelling around the world so maybe he can be helpful with detective things, who knows

hello there! i bring you bigby, someone already in the game and most definitely a detective already. if you'd like to have previous CR, i would be more than fine working something out where Naoto either did some kind of... intern-like program or maybe more akin to ride alongside? or if her family is in law enforcement, he may have just known her parents and could be aware of her desire to be a detective.

she could maybe get involved or has already been involved in some minor crimes that she somehow aced at an alarmingly fast speed. to the point that Bigby might have to get suspicious of her oops. lmk if you would be cool with any of that though!!

HELLO MR DETECTIVE SIR I'd love for them to have previous CR!

I've been working more on her family history, actually, which would provide a way for them to know each other. TL;DR version:

-Grandfather was a prefectural police chief in Japan, moved to America in postwar years. Became a wealthy businessman.
-His son (Naoto's dad) followed in his father's footsteps, and was a detective with ambitions of becoming a captain or even police chief
-When Naoto was very young, her father and mother were killed in an accident (or was it an accident? actually not sure on this part yet)
-Naoto was raised by her grandfather in the suburbs of Recolle but a few years ago moved in to the city to live on her own because she wanted to go to school here and experience more exciting and interesting police work.
-She wants to be a detective to follow in the footsteps of her father and grandfather, and to give her grandfather a proper "successor"
-Her grandfather probably pulled some strings/connections to get Naoto an effective internship, or like you said, a ride-along program

And for Bigby in particular, she probably knows his wife Elizabeth (who might be a little concerned for Naoto living on her own?)

So that's plenty of opportunity for Naoto and Bigby to have a connection! Maybe he knew her dad before her parents died? Or since it was 10+ years ago, maybe he wasn't on the force yet?

So I'm curious as to how Naoto might react to the daughter of an incarcerated mob boss living in the city.

That would be interesting! She'd obviously be of the mind that the sins of the father aren't that of the son (or daughter), of course, but she'd also probably keep an eye on her more than she would most people her age. After all, even if the girl isn't actively participating in her dad's criminal schemes, she might in some way be an unwitting accessory?

I would love Naoto CR!! I think the most obvious way in is that the murder of Rin's dad in this AU is an unsolved case, which could have brought Rin and his sister Chiyo (Sakura) to Naoto's attention -- plus, I think they'll bounce off each other well.

Yes, for sure! That would definitely pique her interest. Her parents' murder was classified as a mugging gone wrong, but that's never sat well with her for various reasons, so looking up other unsolved killings would bring Rin to her attention for sure.
