TEST DRIVE
JANUARY TEST DRIVE
The city of Recollé...

What do you mean the city's behaving for once?

I.
The large opaque dome enveloping the entire city continues to stand tall and firm, though this may be the first time you've noticed the dome itself rather than believe it's simply an eclipse effect. Faintly reflective in appearance but blocking the outside world, the dome still allows the warmth of the weak winter sunlight to seep through. It isn't hard to breathe, and the flora and fauna seem to be responding just as naturally as always. But the city of Recollé is pitch black except for the light citizens shine themselves.

The dome stretches incredibly high over the city, but anyone who can get close enough to it will find that they can briefly see themselves in the surface. Upon touching the dome, it appears to be smooth and almost rubbery in texture despite a shell-like shield appearance. Soundproof and unable to provide clues to what's happening outside of the city the dome is also harmless for those who wish to touch it and examine it, causing it to bounce a few times under light impact. However, do be careful not to trigger its defense mode! Should anyone attempt to damage the dome itself, it will light up with a bright, sickening blue color for three seconds before delivering a shock to its attacker and rendering them unconscious for an hour. Perhaps you'll get lucky and you'll only deal with the too-hot-to-touch surface that self-activates when the dome is threatened, or the spikes that appear at the source of impact. The dome seems to have a temperament of its own. It may be best to treat it the way you want to be treated.

II.
Going about your normal day, the darkness seems endless aside from whatever light can be shed via flashlights, cell phones and interior lights inside buildings. However, as you wander the streets of the city, under your feet a swirl of yellow light appears before darting ahead, bouncing and bobbing its way over snow and concrete to create a clear path for you. It's a little convenient to have a guide to follow, but you're not the only one. Others around you are following their own lights and they all seem to gather right at the entrance of the old subway station. Perpetually under construction for as long as you can remember, the station appears to be wide open for anyone who ventures in.

The light will guide you for roughly twenty-five feet before it dies down again. You're allowed to turn back, of course. There's nothing stopping you...except for the vine that suddenly snakes along the ground and wraps around your ankle, hooking onto you and beginning to drag you further into the tunnels. Now would be a good time to start calling for help.

III.

Back in the city itself, it's hard to say who, exactly, is to blame for the first hit. People are minding their own business and moving on as if everything is perfectly natural as usual. However, in addition to the hustle and bustle small barrels appear on every street corner with an assortment of colored guns. The moment you step up to investigate one of these barrels it becomes a little more clear what, exactly, is happening here.

A bright red, green, or blue dot appears on your skin as the laser light hones in on you. Someone's decided to make you their next target in a city-wide game of laser tag and you have precisely ten seconds to run. For anyone tagged by the guns, a confetti-effect of red green and blue dots will appear all over you lasting for up to fifteen minutes before you're back in the game.

Will you grab your weapons and join the game? Or will you dodge as long as you can?

IV.
As the evening sets in, there's a smell in the air. It's not the usual winter-y scent of peppermint or warm soup or anything like that. No, you soon realize that the smell is buttered popcorn and now instead of the barrels of laser tag guns there are carts containing popcorn machines, bottles of soda, candy and more. These carts don't move and they do not seem to be manned by anybody so feel free to take as much as you'd like! At precisely 7pm, the street lights dim a little and the dome above you starts to...glow? It glows and a picture stretches all the way across the sky as a movie begins to play for your enjoyment. Maybe it's the first of the Galaxy Fights series, or it could be that crazy archaeologist turned fortune-hunter Kentucky Smith. The movies will rotate one after the other for the rest of the evening until 7am when the street lamps come on, but for now grab some blankets and a good seat. There's always time for a movie with some friends.

BONUS.
Of course communication to people outside of the city is still out of the question. Of course it is. There are absolutely no signs of that changing anytime soon no matter how many times you call or text or email. Snail mail is nearly impossible and don't even think about videochatting.

On the other hand, it seems as though the powerlines above are beginning to spark, pulsing in patterns of a bright blue color visible to the naked eye. What's up with that? Trying to get a closer look will only reveal a thick, crackling sort of energy that is surely not dangerous in the slightest and is nothing to worry about.

The energy won't leave the powerlines at all, but instead the next time you use your phone for anything a song activates instead. It's loud and it can't be shut down, but once it ends you may find yourself in a video chat with a fellow Retrospec user. Say hi!

III.

[All Kara had wanted was a nice walk, get out of the lab for a bit and get some fresh air. The dark was playing merry havoc with her sleep schedule, and it'd been getting more difficult to concentrate lately without air, and that was all. Bundled up against the cold, she headed out, figuring she'd leave campus and head for a coffee place.

Only a barrel had drawn her eye.

And that was the end of a peaceful walk. When a laser dot appeared on her chest, she blinked in surprise. A game. A city wide flash-mob or something?]

Oh hell. Why not.

[Grabbing a pistol she turned and began to run...

Right into you. Oops. Are you big and tough enough to stop you both from flopping to the ground? Does she run right over you? Or are you quick enough to avoid her?]

IV A.

[As evening came on and things began to shift towards something more relaxing than a city-wide laser tag game, Kara found herself staring open mouthed as the dome over her head began to play a film. Kentucky Smith and the Shrine of Eternal Torment.

Grabbing a box of gummy worms and a bottle of soda she pulled out her phone and sent a text to someone she knew.]

You seeing this in the sky?

IV B.

[Heading to the university green after the text, that undoubtedly ends in an invitation to join her, Kara set up a blanket and settled in with a notebook. This wasn't a movie she was particularly interested in, but it had been years...and she had never, ever seen anything like this.

Passersby or friends that have decided to come hang are greeted with a grin.]

Wild, huh?

Bonus

[The weird incident with the powerlines was one thing, bizarre but fine, electrical pulses happened sometimes whatever...but this god damn song blaring out of her phone was enough to make her shout.]

Good GOD, SHUT UP!

[Of course, that's come right as the video call starts. Oops.]

[AU info here. Just a normal average citizen here.]

1. Under Observation

[So, this was Ai's life now. The dome appeared earlier in the month but it's only now that she's brought herself to actually take a look at it. Someone might have a series of questions about it. Why is it here? What is it made out of? Why can't I leave?

Ai simply looks at it, slender fingers touching the surface briefly before taking a couple steps backwards. She didn't mind the darkness. Ai's always been a night person, after all. She had no where outside Recolle to go so being stuck in the city wasn't any particular burden on her.

She thought that getting up close would make her change her mind about the situation. That this obstruction would, maybe, stir something inside her.]

Someone had too much time on their hands.

[Even as she speaks, Ai shrugs. It looks like it was just another waste of time.]

2. Movie Night!

[Ai isn't drawn out by the movies in particular. They're all things she's seen, after all. Though, they're free. So she braves the cold just for that. In the end it's the food that gets more of her attention.

She looks at the unmanned carts, gently picking up the soda and the popcorn before setting it back down.]

Mm...seems kind of fishy. Who would go to the trouble of this?

[That said, she does end up taking a container of popcorn.]

3. Eye to Eye

[Even if she doesn't want to leave the city, Ai still had a few high school friends that did leave. It's only natural to try to contact them in such a situation. The problem was that she couldn't. She's trying once again when she hears that song--

She blinks at the video chat.]

Well. If you have a few moments, do you mind chatting? It's getting boring over here.

[Might as well even if they're not the intended targets.]

ii. hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work we go

I can't believe I didn't notice this place until now...

[ Megumi's got her cellphone out, looking around cautiously as she follows the bright lights that led her here down the tunnel. It's mostly curiosity that drives her, though the hunched curve of her shoulders says she's not entirely comfortable being in this creepy place alone. The light dissipates too soon, and Megumi turns on her cellphone flashlight, shining it on the walls and the tracks below.

It's not until she hears the crunch of footsteps behind her that she startles, jumping before whirling around to see who's there. It takes her a second to remember to shine her flashlight at the ceiling instead of at her new companion. ]

I'm so sorry! I didn't blind you, did I?

[ She'll trot over, all concern. ]

Are your eyes okay?

iii. i wouldn't stop these dancin feet

[ So, despite her focus on computer science, Megumi doesn't really play a ton of games. It's more a lack of time than a lack of interest -- she's always so busy! But while she may not be too skilled in firing any kind of gun, real or laser tag, she does have plenty of experience in being intensely competitive.

As well as being light on her feet.

Megumi will be frustratingly difficult to hit, as she seems to dance out of the way of every shot with almost aggravating elegance. Her return fire isn't too accurate, but she seems to be having a ton of fun. And if you're not careful, you'll find that as you try to finally get a shot off on her, you'll step into particularly deep snow, or find yourself on thin ice -- literally! ]

Got you!

[ Beaming and rosy-cheeked, Megumi will take advantage of her carefully planned trap and aim a careful shot right at your head...! ]

bonus. hello hello baby you called

Hi there! That was pretty strange, huh?

[ She'll offer a cute smile, seemingly unperturbed by aforementioned strangeness now that the video call has actually started ]

[[ Howdy! Delta's workshop post is available here for quick reference. :> alternatively, if you wanna hash something out, feel absolutely free to hit that up! ]]
[[ Aaand as Delta isn't going to be the same physically, he's basically just. a very forgettable tall-ish dude that looks like he's spent a lot of time out in the sun over the past few years-- about 6'2", fairly sturdy in build, and in pretty decent shape for his age. he's not much special, and it's whatever as far as he's concerned. ]]

[ I. ]

[ The dome's always been there, hasn't it? It's-- a bit too big to be smuggled into place under cover of night or something like that, and it certainly feels as though it's been a long time since it got where it was today. Jacob can't figure out what it is about it that's gotten his attention today of all days, but something about it just doesn't quite sit right. Why's it here, anyway? There's no way it's doing much good blocking everything in-- or...out, as the case may be. ]
[ That's an uncomfortable thought. Was it for protection, or quarantine? Nothing in the city seemed to be amiss, but then again, the damn dome hadn't seemed like it even existed up until very, very recently. ]

[ Getting out to a spot where he could actually investigate it had taken some doing-- his beat-up excuse for a truck certainly hadn't enjoyed the trip, nor had it done much to make it all that pleasant-- but after some effort and bellyaching on both their parts, Jacob's parked the vehicle a short ways off from a portion of the dome's bottom edge. He's made a point to leave it a distance away just in case; it's probably going to be fine, but he's only got the one car, and if he manages to blow it up or something with this little side trip, he's going to be both pissed and stranded. That certainly isn't going to end well for him. ]
[ He wasn't expecting to see his reflection in the dome's surface for the half-second it was there, and it's enough to convince him to take a half-step back to get as much of a better look as he can. Needless to say, it's not working out as well as he'd hoped-- the yellow glow of his headlights can only do so much, and his phone light's not helping matters, either. Cautiously, he nudges the dome with the toe of a well-scuffed work boot, brow furrowing in silent contemplation as he waits for the response. It...doesn't appear to be doing much, though? Was it supposed to? ]

[ He's pretty distracted at the moment, and the rumble of his truck's engine is doing a good job of drowning out the little noises that might warn him of anyone else's presence. To his credit, Jacob's trying a few different things to try and get a feel for what he's looking at-- seeing as the nudge didn't do anything, he's felt around for a sturdy enough stick to give it a prod with. That earns a sudden wave of heat, and his startled curse is much, much louder than he intended. ]
[ --hopefully, nobody was around to hear that. Probably. He looks around to be sure, shaking his hand a few times to try and cool his singed fingers down faster. It's fine! He's fine. He'll pretend that didn't happen. ]

[ II. ]

[ Admittedly, Jacob hadn't been expecting the subway to be the end point of this goose chase, but-- well, here he was. ]
[ He'd followed the light after a minute or two of curious appraisal, watching the glow as it danced over the terrain; it didn't take a lot of thinking to piece together what it wanted, but whether or not it was a good idea was another thing entirely. He was off today, though-- there were perks to being your own boss-- and that meant that he could spend an hour or so following whatever the hell this was to its intended destination. There's plenty of other people in front of the station when he finally gets there, so...on the plus side, he wasn't the only one who decided to take a detour today! ]
[ He clears his throat awkwardly before he speaks, eyeing the entrance to the station with clear suspicion while his light twirls in front of it. ]

So...that looks like a real good place to get mugged, if you ask me. [ Sure, the light show was a neat trick, but he doesn't trust it much. ] Do we know if anybody's gone in yet, or--? 'Cause if they have, somebody should probably go in after 'em.
[ It's not so much 'probably' as it is 'definitely,' and Jacob's already bracing himself to go running in. Might as well be prepared for it-- somebody ought'a be. ]

[ IV. ]

[ The popcorn's actually pretty decent, surprisingly enough-- he's more than happy to go back for seconds, keeping an eye on the fight scene playing out on the dome overhead as best he can in-between scooping some more snacks into his bag. Jacob appears to be enjoying himself, as much as he's outwardly showing; there's a small smile on his face, and he gives a quiet chuckle when one of the protagonist's cheesy one-liners draw a groan from some of the audience. His soda's still doing alright, and he figures he can pass on a refill for the moment; there were snacks to focus on, and that was the important part. Once he's of the opinion that he's gotten enough to munch on, he leans back against the nearest wall, idly tossing a few pieces of popcorn into his mouth. This impromptu cinema showing's confused the hell out of him, but hey-- he can afford to relax for a minute, right? There's just-- one thing that's bothering him, though. ]

You have any idea what movie this is? [ He hasn't looked down yet, but he's not quite paying as much attention to the film as he was a few seconds ago. ] I got nothing, honestly. Been watching it since it came on, but I'm drawing a blank, sorry to say.

[ dia knew it would be a bad idea to follow the path, but alas, here we are. she's walking down carefully, treading lightly, unsure of what's about to happen. it leads her to the old subway station, and she stops, staring at it, contemplating. maybe poke her and see what she's waiting for...?

of course, she'll venture in, but only for a few feet. without a really good light source, dia realizes it's a bad idea to go any further in.

however, as she turns to walk back out, a vine wraps around her ankle. she falls down, and the vine starts to drag her further in. she's shrieking, screaming. it's kind of comical to watch, but...poor girl. ]

O...kay.

[Jeez. It took her way longer than it should have to find the edge of this damn thing. She'd taken an umbrella to feel her way around a little and make sure she wasn't tripping over anything-- and you know. Just in case she had to smack anyone who tried anything funny. But now that she's found it... hell, she doesn't know what to do with it. She sure as heck isn't going to touch it.

Not directly anyway. Instead she pokes at the dome with her umbrella. When there's no reaction, she gives it a small tap. And then a little harder.

Suddenly there are spikes and her cheap umbrella is stuck on them.
]

...ugh. Fine, I didn't need that.

II.

[Not to brag or anything, but Edna was pretty good at getting by in the dark with nothing but her cellphone to light up her surroundings. It was super obvious when the lights at her feet appeared; swirling and swaying. Okay-- so she could have just ignored it. But part of her was interested to see where the heck it would take her.]

...it's just some cruddy old tunnel.

[Yet she leans over and takes a picture with the flash on. It illuminates the entrance for a moment but it's gone seconds later. She studies it and shakes her head.]

Yeah right. No way. Whatever the trick is here-- you're not getting me.

[Just wait. Sooner or later someone is going to start screaming and it's going to be like some kind of horror story.

Okay, nah, like that would really happen.

...not that she'd be able to turn around and walk away if that really did happen.
]

III.

[Now this is more like it. If they're gonna be stuck in the dark, time to have some fun with it. She has one of the orange guns and has made herself scarce. She's small and agile so stealth is her game. It's just a matter of whether or not she's quick enough. When she goes for the shot, she's not as subtle.]

Pew pew. [Yes. The noise. She made it when she shot.] Better be careful.

[--she says, whether it hit or not. Really, she's just all about baiting you to get in on the game.]

Bonus.

[Oh. My. God. Kill her now. Weird electric whatever? Fine. Bad music? Bad! She's way over this kind of thing okay. It's embarrassing. So when it ends up in a video chat her annoyed face lets up a little.]

Thank god it's over.

[ Kuro has been wondering for ages whether or not they'd actually be finishing the subway anytime soon, but this is... an interesting way to find out what they've been up to. He'd been examining the dome and all, sure, but now with the light he's curious as much as he is cautious. He makes his way along after the light, and then sees where it's leading him, and stops, eyebrow raised.

Because he's not about to head down there. Hands in his pockets, he stares down into where the light's making its way down into the darkness. And then he looks up, curious, trying to see if there's any signs or anything denoting the construction still underway.
    ]

Well, that's not weird or anythin'.

II.
I guess this is one way to do it. [ For as inconvenient and strange as the dome is - did he ever think it was weird before today, though? that's even weirder - Kuro is kind of impressed by the laser tag and the fact the thing has turned into a giant, outdoor theater.

He doesn't have any reservations about taking some popcorn and finding somewhere to hang out. After all, if the city is going to provide all of this free of charge, he'll go ahead and accept the offer. Why let something like this ruffle his feathers? (The subway station was another thing entirely, thanks, but he's just going to enjoy the feature presentation they've got going on and not worry quite so much about that.)

When the movie starts, he makes a small noise, thoughtful.
] Hopefully everyone in the city's seen the other movies.

III.
[ With the dome being the way it is, Kuro hasn't been able to make any calls outside. He's only just now finding it peculiar - of course - but the powerlines... that's just as high up there as everything else is.

It gets a little annoying when he's trying to shoot a text to his sister, but. His phone winds up singing to him? He squints down at it, going from his typical, accidentally intimidating resting face to something bemused and possibly worse as he tries to wait the song out.

That is, probably, what greets whoever he winds up matched with.

[ Kei sounds like he is starting out the conversation at the midway point as he walks up to Shigeru. He offers a half-smile that does not reach his eyes as he looks out to all the excitement happening around them. ]

It certainly makes me wonder if our city has always been this way. Do you wonder the same? [ His gaze flickers back to the young man before he softly chuckles. ] Ah well... it doesn't really matter, does it? This is our home. There are plenty of places everywhere that has scenes and sights that no average person ever sees... and that hardly makes the place that they live wrong.

[Astin is acclimating to this whole Retrospec situation and all the weird shenanigans it comes with as easily as Soleil had. Soleil isn't sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing given that she knows she isn't a good measure of what's sensible, but so long as they're happy...

Soleil has been going out of her way to check up on them now that Astin is all aware of the shenanigans to keep an eye on them. Now that she knows Astin is a-okay today, Soleil makes to leave, but Astin latches onto her before she can say a thing. And starts dumping food into her arms. She is used to being the one to lug stuff around, but...

--Yeah. Yeah, it's going to be a lot of fun. Are you sure you want to spend this snug with your big sister, though?

[She has a date not too long from now to do this with someone else. Is she going to have to cancel her date or turn disappoint the baby?]

Of course not, Mizuki Sena.

[ One wouldn't guess that they were related with how they talk to each other. Kei does have the unfortunate habit of calling people by their full name, if not their first name, after all. But he does try to add a hint of affection in saying his nephew's name. It's awkward, of course, since he has not seen him in such a long time. But as his uncle, the least he can do is sound happy to see him -- and attempt to make it not so uncomfortable for the both of them. ]

For you, I suppose that I can perform such a miracle.

[ They all love matcha. That's the problem. There is never enough to go around. Their mother suffers for their gluttony.

Akira exhales slowly and pinches the bridge of his nose. Did she have to bring up the chips. ]

I was going to come back for them later...

[ Whether or not that's true isn't the point--it was a slight against him and this family doesn't forget. He likes having them to snack on while he studies. ]

If I wanted to get back at you, do you think this is how I'd do it?

Of that, I am certain.

[ And he sounds honestly serious. How did the others handle so many not acknowledging what is happening in their city? It must feel isolating. He does know something about that, and so he agrees what passes for normal is occasionally very surprising. ]

For how long? For how long will I notice these things? [ Rather is there a possibility that he will return to how he was? Could he return to being like how many of his patrons are? ]

That's right, that's right, say it a little louder, let them know I'm awesome~ [ it's said airily, with the sort of casual confidence Peyton posseses only when they're unguarded.

they would pump their fist up in the air if they could, and if they weren't trying to juggle their tower of treats; you know, maybe they can manage it a little if they position themselves right... nope. nevermind. a handful of popcorn ends up spilling from their buckets & peyton is pretty sure they dropped a pack of gummies somewhere in the darkness. it's gone. rip. ]

Oh my god, Astin! Look! [ peyton points upwards with their entire being, it seems, standing on their toes. they grip their precious snack cargo closer to their body, enough that the plastics crinkle against their chest. ] The Kingdom Exacts Retribution!

[ Astin is definitely not a good measure of what's sensible, either. Taking weirdness in stride seems to be almost second nature to Astin, especially since they're forcing all sorts of goodies on Soleil with the expectation that big sister is going to be carrying it all for them.

When Soleil speaks up, Astin gives a slow blink, as if it's taking a moment for them to comprehend what's being said to them. Slowly, their head tilts to one side. Astin hadn't considered the question, really. ]

...Well, yeah. I mean, I like spending time you with you! Why wouldn't I want to get all snug and watch a movie? It'll be like when we were kids!

[ Can you really say no to that face, Soleil? ]

[Timcanpy meanwhile seems to be looking back at her. Maybe. It's hard to tell when he has no eyes] Yeah. I mean, the dome's not good, but it's like the world's biggest IMAX theater.

[He knows this girl is from school, one of the seniors, but he can't recall if she's on the app. ]

Galaxy Fights? Sure, I've seen them all. You?
