JANUARY 2018 TDM
JANUARY TEST DRIVE The city of Recollé... What do you mean the city's behaving for once? I. The large opaque dome enveloping the entire city continues to stand tall and firm, though this may be the first time you've noticed the dome itself rather than believe it's simply an eclipse effect. Faintly reflective in appearance but blocking the outside world, the dome still allows the warmth of the weak winter sunlight to seep through. It isn't hard to breathe, and the flora and fauna seem to be responding just as naturally as always. But the city of Recollé is pitch black except for the light citizens shine themselves. The dome stretches incredibly high over the city, but anyone who can get close enough to it will find that they can briefly see themselves in the surface. Upon touching the dome, it appears to be smooth and almost rubbery in texture despite a shell-like shield appearance. Soundproof and unable to provide clues to what's happening outside of the city the dome is also harmless for those who wish to touch it and examine it, causing it to bounce a few times under light impact. However, do be careful not to trigger its defense mode! Should anyone attempt to damage the dome itself, it will light up with a bright, sickening blue color for three seconds before delivering a shock to its attacker and rendering them unconscious for an hour. Perhaps you'll get lucky and you'll only deal with the too-hot-to-touch surface that self-activates when the dome is threatened, or the spikes that appear at the source of impact. The dome seems to have a temperament of its own. It may be best to treat it the way you want to be treated. II. Going about your normal day, the darkness seems endless aside from whatever light can be shed via flashlights, cell phones and interior lights inside buildings. However, as you wander the streets of the city, under your feet a swirl of yellow light appears before darting ahead, bouncing and bobbing its way over snow and concrete to create a clear path for you. It's a little convenient to have a guide to follow, but you're not the only one. Others around you are following their own lights and they all seem to gather right at the entrance of the old subway station. Perpetually under construction for as long as you can remember, the station appears to be wide open for anyone who ventures in. The light will guide you for roughly twenty-five feet before it dies down again. You're allowed to turn back, of course. There's nothing stopping you...except for the vine that suddenly snakes along the ground and wraps around your ankle, hooking onto you and beginning to drag you further into the tunnels. Now would be a good time to start calling for help. III. Back in the city itself, it's hard to say who, exactly, is to blame for the first hit. People are minding their own business and moving on as if everything is perfectly natural as usual. However, in addition to the hustle and bustle small barrels appear on every street corner with an assortment of colored guns. The moment you step up to investigate one of these barrels it becomes a little more clear what, exactly, is happening here. A bright red, green, or blue dot appears on your skin as the laser light hones in on you. Someone's decided to make you their next target in a city-wide game of laser tag and you have precisely ten seconds to run. For anyone tagged by the guns, a confetti-effect of red green and blue dots will appear all over you lasting for up to fifteen minutes before you're back in the game. Will you grab your weapons and join the game? Or will you dodge as long as you can? IV. As the evening sets in, there's a smell in the air. It's not the usual winter-y scent of peppermint or warm soup or anything like that. No, you soon realize that the smell is buttered popcorn and now instead of the barrels of laser tag guns there are carts containing popcorn machines, bottles of soda, candy and more. These carts don't move and they do not seem to be manned by anybody so feel free to take as much as you'd like! At precisely 7pm, the street lights dim a little and the dome above you starts to...glow? It glows and a picture stretches all the way across the sky as a movie begins to play for your enjoyment. Maybe it's the first of the Galaxy Fights series, or it could be that crazy archaeologist turned fortune-hunter Kentucky Smith. The movies will rotate one after the other for the rest of the evening until 7am when the street lamps come on, but for now grab some blankets and a good seat. There's always time for a movie with some friends. BONUS. Of course communication to people outside of the city is still out of the question. Of course it is. There are absolutely no signs of that changing anytime soon no matter how many times you call or text or email. Snail mail is nearly impossible and don't even think about videochatting. On the other hand, it seems as though the powerlines above are beginning to spark, pulsing in patterns of a bright blue color visible to the naked eye. What's up with that? Trying to get a closer look will only reveal a thick, crackling sort of energy that is surely not dangerous in the slightest and is nothing to worry about. The energy won't leave the powerlines at all, but instead the next time you use your phone for anything a song activates instead. It's loud and it can't be shut down, but once it ends you may find yourself in a video chat with a fellow Retrospec user. Say hi! kirei kotomine (kei shigaraki) | fate/
[ His eyes actually widen in surprise upon actually seeing the dome. Lifting his head up, he merely took a small glance outside before realizing that the darkness was unnatural. Turning everything off, he leaves his shop to take a better look at what is happening. He can't believe that the dome has actually here and he can't help but wonder -- ]
How long has that been here? [ A slight pause. ] I thought it was too early for night... and this isn't an eclipse. [ Yet for so long, he thought that it was and accepted that to be truth. ] How did this happen? [ There had to be a catalyst for it, isn't that right? This couldn't always be this way... could it? ]
bonus.
[ Well, that is not a song he would ever have on his phone, but here we are. He flinches over the volume of it versus the lyrics themselves. A prank? Kei wouldn't say that he's savvy with technology, so all he can do is click a few buttons in an attempt to turn the device off. When that doesn't seem to work, it no longer seems to matter as he finds he is video-chatting with someone. ]
Good evening. [ Offering a small shrug, he continues: ] Though, I cannot say if it is actually evening. The darkness that we've found ourselves in has been upsetting how I perceive time... I actually was intending to check the time. But no matter...
I hope the day is treating you well.
wildcard.
[ The door of the ramen shop opens spilling light out on the street. Kei rests his hand on the doorframe as he peers out into the dark street. ]
I am not one who enjoys watching others struggle in the darkness. [ He huffs out a small sigh, one hand on his hip. ] Come in, I'll ensure the price is fair. This sort of trouble with the dome, as they call it... well, helping others in this time is what we all should be doing, don't you agree?
[ Kei offers a half-smile -- one that doesn't quite reach his eyes. He shakes his head as he steps back away from the door. ] Come in, come in... I might even make ramen. [ Wait, isn't this a ramen shop? Well, the name says it is, but why did he say that he'd make ramen like that isn't actually the main dish?? ]
i
[ kyouko immediately takes note when someone acts surprised about the dome. the non-network folk don't seem to care, as usual, but everyone on the network has gotten used to it (sort of), so this has to be someone new...
of note, her hair and eyes are purple and she does wear her gloves. hi. ]
You only noticed it today?
no subject
[ That, too, is surprising. It has been weeks like this and he did not think anything odd about it. No solar eclipse lasts that long, so why did he assume that was what it was? A good question, but one he doesn't ask. Kei decides that small steps into this new awareness is best rather than stumbling forward in a panic to know everything right now. ]
That's right. I had been in my shop -- [ He makes a gesture to the ramen shop that he just left. The door is still open and it seems like some of the people inside did not even find his sudden leaving odd enough to stop eating. ] -- and the darkness outside looked unnatural to me. It was a sudden thought. "That's unnatural." Coming outside, I realize just how unnatural that it is.
[ A slight pause. ]
But it seems like some of my patrons do not.

Oh, hey, Kei. [ Kiryu nods. ] I didn't realize you were on this app, too. Do you still need to know the time?
no subject
[ His head tilts in a manner that hints at how defeated that he feels at present. ]
I've found that time has become quite fluid for me until recently. [ A slight pause as he continues to explain. ] I had thought that the darkness outside was normal for weeks, apparently. It makes me start to wonder little things like is my concept of what time it is accurate or has that, too, fallen to the wayside.
[ He hums, thoughtful. ] This app... I had been preoccupied with the dome... you're saying that this app is the cause of all these sudden revelations?

[ why did mizuki choose to go down this road of all places... it's been the longest time since he's seen his uncle, let alone step inside his shop, but the delectable scent of food is wafting from the inside and. well. come to think of it, he hasn't eaten dinner yet - ]
And can you even make ramen that's not even remotely spicy, Kei-san?
[ squiiiints ]

[ One wouldn't guess that they were related with how they talk to each other. Kei does have the unfortunate habit of calling people by their full name, if not their first name, after all. But he does try to add a hint of affection in saying his nephew's name. It's awkward, of course, since he has not seen him in such a long time. But as his uncle, the least he can do is sound happy to see him -- and attempt to make it not so uncomfortable for the both of them. ]
For you, I suppose that I can perform such a miracle.

It's more a good business proposition, really. Though I suppose charity is as good an advertising tactic as any. Do you have tea?
bonus
Yeah, I guess. Hey, Kei. [Her lips flicker in a small smile.]
How about you?

[ There is a joke hidden somewhere in his words. It is what he considers a reward for the patience shown to him and the situation that they presently find themselves. ]
I'm under the assumption that this app now gifts us insight into the world... or at the very least, insight into this city. Odd, isn't it? What we have not noticed until now?

That would be the only reason as to why very few customers have showed up today. This dome has certainly thrown a wrench into business, hasn't it?
[ he does recognize Kei. at least this is pretty fortunate for Leon, who could have been connected to anyone after that weird song. ]
[1/2]
[ Yet somehow he was able to manage it very well. But that was before the app appeared, and when the Avatar was needed most -- wait, hold on -- ]
At least the regulars still showed up. Well, when I speak of regulars, I mean those that appear to be without this application. I've questioned them briefly about the dome, but, well, it doesn't get me anywhere... for them, it's business as usual and I still have enough sense as a business owner to treat them. [ He shrugs. What can you do? ]
It is still a relief to see a familiar face, Leon Aksera. Though, are either of our faces familiar? With each new piece of information, our insides change just a little. Slowly but surely, what is a familiar face grows unfamiliar as we uncover who we are in this chaos.

And you can always say "no." [ Could he be teasing? Probably. They're both people who show their apathy toward the world in different ways, after all. ] Today is a special occasion. We should celebrate it by doing something unexpected.

[ Not that she is not demanding every time that she comes to visit. Kei wonders if he noticed it before, or not. Did the "him" that did not have the app acknowledge her personality? What about the "him" that exists now because he can see the world? He's become quite philosophical in the last few hours, it would seem. ]
I'll be certain to be kind today and serve it with milk. [ In fact, he is already pouring a cold glass for her to set on the counter before he begins. ] Are you going to attempt the challenge today, as well?

[ Even though most people check the time on their phones nowadays, Mio herself has a watch on her that she uses quite frequently, although she can't say that she doesn't use her phone. Sometimes. ] But besides the craziness that's been happening, I guess I could say that things could have been worse. Let's just hope I don't jinx that, now.
no subject
Shall you take responsibility if things do indeed get worse? [ He cocks his head to the side, breathing out a half-laugh. No, he isn't serious with his question. ] In any case, it's good that it is still the afternoon. That means that there is still time left in the day for things to be done. Is that not so, young miss?

Izuku has gotten used to carrying around a flashlight with him everywhere since the Dome has come down. And thus far, it has worked out well enough. Until now as his light woefully gives up its last burst of light as the battery dies.
He's saved from having to muddle about in the dark when a door opens, spilling out light onto the street. He looks up at the man with relief. At the very least he can step in long enough to send a text to his mom about where he is.]
Yeah, of course. I really appreciate your help. Thank you. I'll try not to be a bother.

[ He holds his chin as he looks the young man over. Though, why was he visiting the clinic in the first place? It isn't like he doesn't know, but rather the reason for it was something like his bones were breaking a lot.
Bullying, perhaps? Or could it be something going on in the city that he has not been aware of? Some violent happenings that he wouldn't know about because he was not gifted the means to acknowledge them until now. ]

Please take a seat, miss. [ He slightly tips his head. While it's hardly his fault being six-foot-four, he does acknowledge that her looking up at him would eventually hurt the neck. He gestures to a stool for her to sit at the counter. ] Do your eyes happen to hurt, by the by?
