Hmm. Lucy was surrendered at birth, but she knew about Katherine and had an okay relationship before Lucy wrecked her own orphanage and their relationship got strained as hell. Maybe Lucy and Lumina were placed in the same home because they were related to each other? Their social worker could have told them, even if they were oblivious about the other's existence before.

After they were split up for one or both getting in trouble with the police and [abstract red tape bullshit reasons] Lucy would have tried to get back in contact with Lumina, but probably couldn't. Their relationship could have cooled there before unexpectedly meeting each other again in Recolle.

Katherine was taken as well when her mother, shortly after surrendering Lucy, was deemed ill fit to take care of her. Her mother eventually got things together, yet didn't tell Kath that it would be unlikely the her sister would return as well due to surrendering her. Katherine is unaware of what exactly happened at the orphanage, she only knows that there was a particularly brutal fight amongst some of the children. She and her mother did try to get her sister back on some occasions, though couldn't find her after she was dispersed into the system following the incident.

She is somewhat aware that her father has another child: Lumina would pop up due to a shared surname and parent, though likely before she is put into the system. It also acts as the only window Kath will ever have into her father's life (unless more pink-haired relatives pop up somehow.) after leaving. Alternatively we could just have Kath completely unaware of Lumi's existence and have Lucy telling her be the way she learns of her.

I cannot wait for the sheer mindfuck their family tree is gonna become once Lucy and Kasen get their horns back, yet find their younger sister doesn't have them. The whole "Secret Oni" revelation is going to rock the foundations of how Katherine views herself.

This is going to be fun.

Let me see if I understand the timeline here.

- When Katherine is nine, her father leaves, having knocked up her mother again just before that, and Lucy is born.
- As things get bad, Katherine goes into foster care and lucy goes in but is given up.
- Her mother gets katherine back but lucy floats around the system.
- Five years after that, their father has a third kid, Lumina, and presumably leaves her with her mother too, who eventually dumps her in the foster system.
- So, half-sisters?
- At some point in the system, Lumina meets Lucy but they don't know they're related?
- Katherine figures that out later on while she's looking for...lucy?

Yeah, though shortly before Lucy is born, Katherine looses her right arm in a car accident. The financial part of the treatment ends up putting the pressure on their mother that convinces her that putting Lucy into the system is the best way to give her a fighting chance.

okay so I suppose the question is, what happened after that? Did they talk to Lumina? Does she know any of this?

I think they all would know about each other in some degree by now, otherwise it might get kinda...boring, haha. How much Lumina absorbed is up to you.

Another thought I had was Lucy attempting in some stunted way to act like a big sister that she's lost when Lucy and Lumina were in the same foster home. And not exactly getting it right. Siblings throw rocks and run away from cops together, right??

"Throw rocks and run away from cops, huh?" Katherine is going to have some scary cases of deja vu when she hears these stories. Seriously, what is with this family and delinquetism?...welp, she and Lucy now have the job of making sure their kid sister's record doesn't get any worst than theirs did.

Half sisters sounds good to me! I was thinking Lucy and Lumina knew each other before Recolle, though, and Lucy bonding more strongly with her before being separated again (within six-ish months?) because Lucy's apparent lot in life is never having a stable home environment or friends for more than five minutes.

Also can confirm their dad is a douche.

Just checking, but would she have the Takada surname or a different one? Actually, which parent is it the surname of, cause I always figured it was their moms until I read up on some laws.
