Naoto's father was a police detective who was murdered (along with her mom) so they'd have that in common? Though she is a few years younger than him.

Mmmmaybe they're childhood friends whose fathers met at work then! And he never realized she was a girl until much later but by that point, he's just trying to deny reality. Because he's an idiot.

AND/OR if you're okay with it, maybe we can also say one dad was working on the case of the other dad's murder? Then that dad dies (maybe because of the same murderer/criminal organization idk) and it's all one hot mess of blood and murder and gritty anime Batman-esque angst.

When was his dad killed? Her parents were murdered in an apparent mugging gone wrong about 12 years before the current day when she was just 4. (Naoto thinks there was more to it, but I've left that ~deliberately ambiguous~)

Incidentally, if he knew her back then, she was tomboyish but not actively presenting male, that's a more recent occurrence. So he'd either know her secret or be *sure* that she must have a twin sister.

oh man okay so I talked it over with Yata's AU mom, aaaand his dad would have died 4 years ago so we can't do the thing. I'm making details vague though, just in case... something.

I guess he'd be in on her secret, then!! If he knew her from before, I think he'd be more comfortable around her. (But still scared, ok)

Well depending on how long his dad was working as an officer he might have known Detective Shirogane anyway?

Yata doesn't have a poker face HE IS THE WORST CONFIDANTE!!! he just walks out of the room whenever she arrives just to keep it safe...
