but ahhh! yes. yata needs types like kurama to keep him grounded. but also i want shenanigans. maybe one day he drags kurama along on a case. then kurama helps him with picking a lock and yata's like "?? ??? ??????? IS THERE SOMETHING YOU'RE NOT TELLING ME"

I FEEL SO STRONGLY ABOUT KURAMA NEEDING LOUD AND QUASI-EMBARRASSMENT FRIENDS AROUND HIM AT ALL TIMES

and then obviously god help anyone who screws with yata like kurama is pretty even keel right up until the point when you mess with one of his friends and then he pops your head off with a whip made of flowers

we don't like him when he's angry is what i am getting at here

i should tell you now that yata has an aloof best friend in canon who would pull this sort of shit so this is only par for the course

OKAY BUT how would they know each other though... would they be childhood friends or is he a buddy from high school that knows all about his awkward teenage years (well no, yata is still awkward)

or does yata know him from one case/incident and somehow keeps running into him ever since

HMMM well if Yata was born and raised in Recolle then they probably didn't cross paths until Kurama moved here (he's a recent arrival, for uni) BUT that still leaves open a few options...

1) I love the "they crossed paths once on a case and then it turned into weird friendship" idea, like idk Yata was chasing a guy and Kurama was coming out of a coffee shop and THINKING QUICKLY threw his boiling-hot Americano into the perp's eyes, enabling Yata to tackle the perp and haul him in for JUSTICE

2) I SEE HE LIKES VIDEO GAMES so if you'd like them to have a longer history than that, maybe they met via the internet and were long-distance gamer buddies and then when Kurama was thinking about moving to Recolle that was one of the perks in his considerations, was like oh hey, I know someone who lives there, cool

3) Regardless of what we choose it might actually be really fun to do something kind of like - so Yata's dreaming of making detective, that means he's gonna have to understand THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE CRIMINAL MIND and so maybe we can find a way to have Kurama be his obviously purely hypothetical criminal consultant who he talks to for insight into stuff like that

because it's not shady at all when Kurama's like YOU KNOW IF I WERE GOING TO ROB THAT BANK THIS IS DEFINITELY HOW I'D DO IT...

i thought i replied to this but that was a fever dream apparently

I AM IN LOVE with scenario #1 but WHAT IF all three of these happened at once? Yata and Kurama are gamer buddies, Kurama says "i'm moving to recolle k" (or maybe he doesn't tell yata, idk what's funnier) and the situation with the coffee happens and MAYBE THEY DON'T RECOGNIZE EACH OTHER FROM THAT TIME but when they finally meet up to hang out... AH!!

and then #3 happens naturally because it crops up in their conversations from time to time

also you said kurama was a japanese mythology nut, and it just so happens that yata calls himself yatagarasu in canon and has friends with names like kusanagi and totsuka... k is one big japanese mythology reference basically so. that'll be fun for him maybe??

DOES HE WANT TO BE THE ONE WHO GAVE HIM THE NICKNAME "KURAMA"

RIGHT NOW IT'S JUST A RANDOM BACKSTORY CHARACTER WHO DID IT BUT IT WOULD BE REALLY CUTE IF THAT WAS WHERE IT CAME FROM

i mean they were probably online friends at that point right? UGH okay so what if i rehash this and like

Yata's online handle is Yatagarasu

And Kurama immediately recognized it on the US/Japan servers (idk where they'd play) and is like ah I know that from somewhere!! and yata is stupidly proud and that's how their friendship begins idk

But Kurama had a shitty online handle so Yata was like ok I will bless you with a new one, no questions, bc that's how he bulldozes his way into things

And that's how Kurama happened
