TEST DRIVE
MAY TEST DRIVE
The city of Recollé...

...well. Good luck!

I.
You might've noticed by now that some things in this dear city of yours are a little...weird. Most of the buildings and landmarks around you are only partially visible and the world appears to be covered in all kinds of strange colors.

As you step out the door today, you can't quite shake off the feeling that you're being followed. Every time you turn your head, nothing appears to be in your line of vision but the creeping sensation won't go away. However, with one final well-timed turn you catch it out of the corner of your eye: a large paintbrush dripping in your favorite color, floating in mid-air. The brush doesn't seem to go away no matter how long you look at it, but one of two things happens here.

For those of you who grab the brush, you'll find yourself suddenly yanked forward as the brush guides you to a nearby building, bush, or busy sidewalk, the colored paint splattering everywhere but leaving behind a black finish instead of the original color. The brush has a mind of its own as it brings you right next to a friend or a stranger to get to work. They must have a brush, too.

For those of you who ignore the brush, however...well...it doesn't like being ignored. As you turn away the brush zips forward and begins to paint your face. And your arms. And your clothes? Hopefully someone will come by and try to help soon!

II.
With that exciting chain of events out of the way, it's time to get to work! It's not hard to notice what it is you're supposed to do now. Certain members of the city have paintbrushes similar to yours and only those with brushes can restore the city as it was. Individually painting the area will highlight all items in black, but pairing up with someone else's color will allow for a bit of color to attach. Blending the brushes together will generate new, bright colors that will stick! Two reds can paint an object red while a red and a blue can change an object to purple.

Of course, you're free to go at it alone. There's nothing stopping you from embarking on this journey with your own two hands. On the other hand the longer you work by yourself, the higher your risks become of unearthing something you may not want. One minute you might be painting a garden bench back into existence when suddenly a sound alerts you that something's wrong. The object seems to warp right in front of you, sprouting teeth, eyes, and even sometimes limbs. Non-stationary objects such as vehicles, animals, postal boxes and more will begin to chase painters around all five districts of the city. Stationary objects will do anything to grab you in their grasp and stop your hard work. The only way to soothe these objects is to mix up a new color and douse them with paint, but that just might be a little harder than it looks while you're on the move.

III.

The strange thing is that even with a large portion of the city invisible to the naked eye, by now everyone around you has accepted that this is just how things will go. If you talk to your family or friends or teachers or co-workers who are without a paintbrush, they'll simply tell you that even though it started a few weeks ago there are other things in the city to worry about. They'll tell tales of people with powers and weird physical changes that shouldn't be possible and they'll point out the thinning monsters that are roaming the city and cleaning up the stray paint.

Despite this, life is expected to go on as normal. Classes are still in session and your employers expect you to be at work on time. Grocery stores are up and running and if you can find them several of your favorite businesses are still open as well. Maybe today you're in class procrastinating on a school project, or perhaps you're staring out the window at your boring job waiting for the next time you can catch a break. If you're brave enough, you might be one of those who wanders the half-missing aisles of Freshens because your family still insists on their cookout this weekend. This appears to be the new norm...so what are you doing today in the lovely "city" of Recollé?

IV.
Several citizens have been using their brushes to expand their horizons and paint beyond the limits of the city, working to recreate the roads to go back to other regions. While this will require far more work and dedication, some of the paths are outlined and cleared.

Granted, with the revival of the roads comes the revival of a few other creatures including monsters of varying breeds. Have you ever fought a monster before? No? Well now's your chance! Some of these monsters are easy to take down but others will hunt and attack. While the paint brushes won't do much to deter the creatures themselves, they're useful to paint new hiding spots until you come up with a plan of attack. That counts, doesn't it? Good luck out there.

BONUS.
Perhaps the strangest thing of all is that your phone works. It's fully functional, colored and solid without having to repaint it into existence. Being able to send texts and check maps are vital tools in the restructure of the city, but at the same time it comes with something you may not want.

The Retrospec app appears on your phone and even without setting up a profile you'll find yourself receiving a message from a Retrospec user named Zee Carlisle.

Bad timing, this was really bad timing! Hey newbies, sorry, we are a little swamped with the stabilization process right now but let me kick you to some people who can help out.

It's all the text says before you find yourself redirected to a private chat with another Retrospec user. Don't be shy now! Say hi and ask all of the questions you need!

Welcome to the [community profile] recolle test drive meme! All characters will be begin in-game AU'd as Recollé residents. You may use any of the above prompts for ideas or make up your own depicting your Recollé AU! Prompts do not have to be set in the districts listed above. You can review our list of locations for what's available. Please note that TDM threads can be used as samples, can be kept as game canon, and can also be used for bonus points for future item regains. Share a few minor details of your AU, tag around, and have fun!

For current players, please remember that TDM threads can only be used for bonus points, not regains.

Please note: you will need a reserve to apply, and current characters must have full AC posted at the time of their reservation.

Finally, please remember that this will be the last application month until September!

Your May TDM directory is here, and your AU workshop is here! Our mod questions thread for this TDM is over here!

I. Paint the Town.

[ Featured: One sharp-dressed, obviously rich elderly man with a cane calmly splattering black paint out of gold-dripping brush. Sure, he shouldn't have to do that, but none of his employees seem to be able to see the brush or do anything with it if he tries to give it to them, and he can see the panic at the whiteness in the eyes of all but the most experienced of them.

Coming to visit his son was certainly not supposed to cause a mental breakdown in his people. He was going to call Noct. Eventually. He had work to do now, however.
    ]

Bonus

I would rather not be kicked, please and thank you.

ooc: Or wildcard it. As to AU info, general guideline is: This is Noctis's dad, so what is applicable to his AU is applicable to Regis rn.

[ whatever the reason that this young man is here, from the start, he doesn't look happy about it, wearing a frown and an aura of "i don't want to be here." really, it smells way too sweet in here, he wants out asap. maybe he's in the wrong store? ]

Yeah, be grateful I'm asking for your customer service so you don't have to watch paint dry.

[ he foists a paw print-patterned memo sheet onto suzu with some... ah they aren't even candy names, they're descriptions of their packaging and what they taste like? ]

Work's slow as hell until we get all the equipment back in order, so I'm stuck doing errands. One of the vet techs wants some candy for her daughters, but of course she doesn't even remember the brands, what a pain...

[ loud sigh. ]

[Shuji's color is a similar red, so he's gravitated towards some of the same things in the city. This other guy is painting a fire hydrant, and he's just about to suggest they combine reds, when that fire hydrant sprouts teeth.

Shuji also does not fuck with killer fire hydrants. When Akutagawa kicks the fire hydrant towards him, Shuji grabs the book sitting in his satchel, which promptly turns into a giant scythe.

He can't slice straight through that hydrant, but he sure can discourage it from trying to grab him by introducing it to a sharp blade. The fire hydrant wobbles when it's hit, then heads back towards Akutagawa, the person not holding a weapon half his height.]

[Caitlin has barely been at this table long enough to set her own tray down, so it's with a faintly sheepish smile that she taps out her reply on her phone and holds it up for Bobby to read.]

no problem! it's crowded today huh?

[Which doesn't bother her - crowds are easy enough to blend in with - but she can sympathise with how awkward Bobby looks hovering over the table, too.

Just to show willing, she picks up the pink paintbrush she'd left dripping over the side of the table, and... hmm. Her gaze flicks from side to side. Actually, where else can she put this? The table isn't that big.]

[Libraries are some of Shuji's favorite places, and a monster disrupting the sanctity of a library - especially one that has innocent kids in it - deserves an asskicking.

So Shuji follows Caitlin and the monster outside, holding a book - which promptly turns into a scythe half his height.]

[...Well then. He may or may not be the Grim Reaper in disguise, and she would really like to interview him about that later, but for now Caitlin can appreciate an assist when she sees it. With no time to pull out her phone, she just flashes Shuji a quick thumbs up.

And then immediately has to duck to the side, trailing pink paint, as the creature aims an inexplicably serrated mousepad at her head.]

I. All the green-- wait, no, it comes out Black, anyway. Paint it Black? That doesn't seem to fit the mood, either.

The blond stocky man was working hard at the task that seemed to be assigned. There was a focus to his motions, and it maybe took him a little too long to notice that there was somebody watching him. Only then did he stop and look up.

"May I help you?"

Yes, he could see the brush they were holding. But he hadn't gotten to the part of mixing paint, yet.

III. Water u doing, little thing?

Bart nearly tripped on one of the small... creatures? moving underfoot, and he was frowning down at it when he noticed that its skirts were brushing off the paint and.

"No, no no no. You do not do this." And he reached down to pluck it off the sidewalk. "We need to see where we go, don't you understand that? What are you, anyway..."

Confused pianist is confused. What is happening...

Bonus.

Are you somebody who can "help out"?

((OOC: AU workshop is over here, I accept all the things! You can friend me at [plurk.com profile] Tseil, if you like! Also, if anyone laughs at my McGyver namedrop, let me know, and I will give you a cookie!))

[ I. Paint me a way! ]

"Whoa, no way!" Zack pokes at the floating paintbrush a moment. He was about to head out to work (not that he could find it anyway on more than well-placed memory at this point; this abstract painted stuff makes it difficult for him to figure anything out), but this little paintbrush has definitely garnered his attention for now, instead. "It's neon green! How cool is that!"

He glances at the semi-blank canvas around him. He wonders if the paintbrush would make it better - he can paint whatever he wants, right?

Sure! Let's paint the town r-- err, green!

He reaches out to grab the paintbrush, but he doesn't expect it to suddenly jolt and start pulling him off to somewhere mysterious. He gives a very loud yelp of surprise, and then starts laughing as he lets it lead him to where it wants to go, musing at the streams of paint as they splatter past him. And then he smiles at you as the brush stops him next to you.

"Hey, you get a magic paintbrush, too?" He holds his up to show you. He doesn't seem at all bothered by this surreal experience. "What colour did you get?"

[ IV. I'm going to eat this Octorock! ]

Oh, man, Zack's all for a sudden, reckless adventure but uh...

"I have nothing to fight with." He looks a little nervous as he tries to stay still as he looks at an Octorock. What's he going to do, now?

Well. He's worried that the monster might go for someone else. And he certainly doesn't want that to happen.

"Heeeeere, uh... Octopus, octopus, octopus!"

He tries to beckon it to follow him, as he tries to stray it from, hopefully, other people. But the Octorock seems to have other idea - it shoots a rock at him.

"Yikes!" Zack dives out of the way and hits the ground. Man, he needs something to defend himself with. A shield? A shield would be great. But... well, he doesn't know where to find anything like that, and he needs to think fast.

He scrambles to his feet and quickly starts sweeping his paintbrush to find his way around, all while trying to dodge the angry Octorok.

He reveals an alleyway. Well... It's not very good for self-defense (in fact, it's very bad. Narrow alleyways make him an easier target.) but he'll go for it. Making sure the monster is following him, he takes off down the alley, sweeping his paintbrush as he goes along. Maybe he'll find a dumpster, and something useful in it? That's how it usually works in action TV or something, right? Like in McGyver MacLdyvir, right?

Unfortunately, Hollywood luck is not on his side.

"A dead end?!" Oh, no... Zack grimaces as he looks back over his shoulder. Now what? He desperately tries to paint the wall in front of him, trying to find how high it goes, trying to find an escape. But then the wind gets knocked out of him as a rock hits him square in the back. And he crumples to his knees.

"Wow..." He gasps for air in between. He chuffs a laugh, realizing how screwed he is. "Those really hurt, huh?"

Someone, please help him.

For a split second, Togusa’s heart seems to leap in his chest when he comes up behind Bart. The man has a striking resemblance to one of Togusa’s superior officers. He’s in police uniform as he comes up, back ramrod-straight as he thinks he is approaching someone he greatly respects. “Sir-“

An instant too late, he sees the differences, realizes his mistake. He cannot backpedal fast enough. “Uh- I mean. Sorry. Thought you were- someone else.”

What the fuck???

[Enough was enough and-- after being assaulted by this particular paintbrush that had seen fit to entangle itself in his long, messy ponytail, Everett Vale turned to the one tried and true tactic that always worked in times when reason had no bearing any longer:

Run.

Feel free to laugh at the man-- or try to help him. Even video game logic could only go so far in the midst of this chaos...

Or, did it?

A true gamer would realize that this was a Quest and that they had received The Call to Adventure.]

He wanted to get this oer quickly; he didn't want to deal with this right now.]

Some kind of high-speed object slams into the vicious tentacled cannon from behind, knocking it over face-down onto the pavement. It's not an object, though, it's a person: a blond guy with various colors of paint smears on his face and clothes. Zack will get a closer look at him as the hard impact barely slows his momentum. Cloud smacks clumsily into the dead-end wall above Zack, then tumbles to the ground in a heap of limbs next to him.

Hearing a yell, Cloud abandons the paint sprayer he modeled after a lawnmower and jogs in the direction of the noise. Is somebody rubbing their brush into their own face? Even after pulling off his painting goggles, it takes him a moment to figure out what might be happening. He might consider trying to intervene, except there's no telling how a brush that energetically clingy would react to someone who it didn't belong to trying to separate it from its owner.

"Try grabbing onto it!"
