JANUARY 2018 TDM

TEST DRIVE
JANUARY TEST DRIVE
The city of Recollé...

What do you mean the city's behaving for once?

I.
The large opaque dome enveloping the entire city continues to stand tall and firm, though this may be the first time you've noticed the dome itself rather than believe it's simply an eclipse effect. Faintly reflective in appearance but blocking the outside world, the dome still allows the warmth of the weak winter sunlight to seep through. It isn't hard to breathe, and the flora and fauna seem to be responding just as naturally as always. But the city of Recollé is pitch black except for the light citizens shine themselves.

The dome stretches incredibly high over the city, but anyone who can get close enough to it will find that they can briefly see themselves in the surface. Upon touching the dome, it appears to be smooth and almost rubbery in texture despite a shell-like shield appearance. Soundproof and unable to provide clues to what's happening outside of the city the dome is also harmless for those who wish to touch it and examine it, causing it to bounce a few times under light impact. However, do be careful not to trigger its defense mode! Should anyone attempt to damage the dome itself, it will light up with a bright, sickening blue color for three seconds before delivering a shock to its attacker and rendering them unconscious for an hour. Perhaps you'll get lucky and you'll only deal with the too-hot-to-touch surface that self-activates when the dome is threatened, or the spikes that appear at the source of impact. The dome seems to have a temperament of its own. It may be best to treat it the way you want to be treated.

II.
Going about your normal day, the darkness seems endless aside from whatever light can be shed via flashlights, cell phones and interior lights inside buildings. However, as you wander the streets of the city, under your feet a swirl of yellow light appears before darting ahead, bouncing and bobbing its way over snow and concrete to create a clear path for you. It's a little convenient to have a guide to follow, but you're not the only one. Others around you are following their own lights and they all seem to gather right at the entrance of the old subway station. Perpetually under construction for as long as you can remember, the station appears to be wide open for anyone who ventures in.

The light will guide you for roughly twenty-five feet before it dies down again. You're allowed to turn back, of course. There's nothing stopping you...except for the vine that suddenly snakes along the ground and wraps around your ankle, hooking onto you and beginning to drag you further into the tunnels. Now would be a good time to start calling for help.

III.

Back in the city itself, it's hard to say who, exactly, is to blame for the first hit. People are minding their own business and moving on as if everything is perfectly natural as usual. However, in addition to the hustle and bustle small barrels appear on every street corner with an assortment of colored guns. The moment you step up to investigate one of these barrels it becomes a little more clear what, exactly, is happening here.

A bright red, green, or blue dot appears on your skin as the laser light hones in on you. Someone's decided to make you their next target in a city-wide game of laser tag and you have precisely ten seconds to run. For anyone tagged by the guns, a confetti-effect of red green and blue dots will appear all over you lasting for up to fifteen minutes before you're back in the game.

Will you grab your weapons and join the game? Or will you dodge as long as you can?

IV.
As the evening sets in, there's a smell in the air. It's not the usual winter-y scent of peppermint or warm soup or anything like that. No, you soon realize that the smell is buttered popcorn and now instead of the barrels of laser tag guns there are carts containing popcorn machines, bottles of soda, candy and more. These carts don't move and they do not seem to be manned by anybody so feel free to take as much as you'd like! At precisely 7pm, the street lights dim a little and the dome above you starts to...glow? It glows and a picture stretches all the way across the sky as a movie begins to play for your enjoyment. Maybe it's the first of the Galaxy Fights series, or it could be that crazy archaeologist turned fortune-hunter Kentucky Smith. The movies will rotate one after the other for the rest of the evening until 7am when the street lamps come on, but for now grab some blankets and a good seat. There's always time for a movie with some friends.

BONUS.
Of course communication to people outside of the city is still out of the question. Of course it is. There are absolutely no signs of that changing anytime soon no matter how many times you call or text or email. Snail mail is nearly impossible and don't even think about videochatting.

On the other hand, it seems as though the powerlines above are beginning to spark, pulsing in patterns of a bright blue color visible to the naked eye. What's up with that? Trying to get a closer look will only reveal a thick, crackling sort of energy that is surely not dangerous in the slightest and is nothing to worry about.

The energy won't leave the powerlines at all, but instead the next time you use your phone for anything a song activates instead. It's loud and it can't be shut down, but once it ends you may find yourself in a video chat with a fellow Retrospec user. Say hi!

[It's someone he knows. That, at least, gets Michel to stop for a bit from screaming to look at him.]

How the hell are you so relaxed?! This isn't a horror game it's -- urgh!

[The vines are twirling around his stomach now. At least that stopped the screaming, right?]

there was more but the display name has limited characters

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-01-19 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He's relaxed because it isn't him being slowly suffocated to death, to be honest, but also because it takes time for somebody to die of asphyxiation. A vine snapping Michel's neck would be a bigger problem, though, so he takes careful aim and lets the first arrow fly.

It hits the vine just beside Michel's jugular.

...He tries again, the second arrow hitting dead center on the vine around his stomach; another centimeter and it might have pierced clothes and skin underneath. The vine doesn't seem to feel pain or care about any of this, and only squeezes harder. ]
deathboss: (GAMEOVER MAN GAMEOVER)

it's so beautiful

[personal profile] deathboss 2018-01-19 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[Normally, he'd probably marvel on his friend's shooting ability. Right now, he's starting to loose consciousness from the thing trying to strangle him in the stomach. Panic keeps him upright, and when the second arrow hits the central vine, he fits the tiniest nip from the end of the arrow touching him.

For a brain in panic, it probably feels like he's just been stabbed to death and his mouth opens to let out a scream...only to be covered by the nearby vine that had been aiming for his neck. Fortunately, the scream is muted by the vine, and he looks at Minato helplessly.

THIS IS THE WORST. HE MIGHT DIE!!]

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-01-21 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
[ Thank you, vine.

Minato ignores the look so he can concentrate on drawing the third arrow— this one hits the vine around Michel's leg, wrapped around his ankle— a fourth that bites into the same vine halfway to the ground, and that's all Minato needs to lower his weapon and bound forth, pulling out a tiny switch blade from his pocket and using that to swing at the vines that come lashing out at him when he draws near. The arrows don't do much to free Michel, but they provide footholds for Minato to step on and climb his way up so he can cut him out: wrists first, then his legs... not touching the one wrapped around his mouth. ]
deathboss: (No sushi plz)

[personal profile] deathboss 2018-01-21 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
[The fear of death is a rather powerful thing. Michel is helpless, but not completely stupid. Once he realizes what Minato is doing, he's pushing himself with all of the desperate strength he can muster to pull himself upwards.

The vine seems to be trying to strangle itself harder around his feet and mouth, and the blade cuts away, leaving him with freedom - well - almost.

His hands are still too weak from the attack to grab at the final vine and it's trying to push him back in. He attempts to pull it off, only for a slew of swearing to come from his mouth in anger before it manages to block him again. At least he got to breathe.

But um, a little help, bro...please?]

[ Almost there... It'd be much easier if he had his sword or any of his other close range weapon on him, but he doesn't yet know how to use them without being a danger to himself and everybody around him, so it's this tiny knife that he pulls lengthwise through the vines, stringing them so that even if they do grab his ankles and try to drag him away from Michel, they're weak enough that he can pull his foot out of the hold and break free. The only exception to this tactic is the last of the vines wrapped around Michel; Minato slashes upwards straight through it, nearly taking off Michel's ear, but he needs that wide swing in order to cut through such a thick vine.

Freedom!

Enjoy that ten foot drop to the ground. ]
deathboss: (Emotion - What the fuck)

[personal profile] deathboss 2018-01-22 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[When you're at (what you think anyway) is your edge of death, you barely notice the blades that could, had he moved a little more to the right, could have completely cut off his ear. No, honestly, you're just happy to be alive as you fall down ten feet from the air, adrenaline hitting him enough that he manages to land on his feet (somehow) and then makes a bolt to get away from the tentacles...vines....tentacle vines as much as possible.

Once that's done, however, his eyes are glued to Minato, in a mixture of both fear and awe.]

Holy shit, bro! I never knew you were some sort of action hero!

[He coughs up a bit of blood, and there is a cut on one of his sides, but otherwise Eikichi looks fine. His muscles will be a bitch tomorrow or once the adrenaline stops, but for now he's alive and 'well'.]

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-01-22 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Action Hero Minato doesn't quite get away as cleanly as Michel does, but after a bit of a struggle, mostly involving slashing at the vines grabbing his ankles and not having as much luck getting his feet free without drawing blood, he's able to get out of range as well.

If he were a better hero, he'd be able to summon something to take care of all this blood and other injuries, but right now he's just a guy with a bow and real need for new socks, so sorry.

He lets the bow drop to the ground and places both hands on either of Michel's shoulders. ]

Yeah. Got to keep my identity a secret, alright?

[ He's trusting you with this. There are people in this city who, if they knew Minato were almost getting killed yet again, would come back and murder him. ]
deathboss: (Awww fuck!)

[personal profile] deathboss 2018-01-22 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my gods, you're serious. Shit! No way! You're a real super hero! ...tell me I'm dreamin!

[He totally will, he's just...flabbergasted? Amazed? Slightly envious?]

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-01-22 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[ One of the hands leaves Michel's shoulder to slap over his mouth. Shhhhhh. ]

I'm in my civilian guise right now. Let's not draw attention.

[ He's aware of the camera crew always following him around, and that's DNW. ]
deathboss: (Grinning - I am so cool)

[personal profile] deathboss 2018-01-22 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[MINATO...YOU'RE JUST GONNA MAKE IT WORSE....but Eikichi nods at him smiling a bit despite the pain in his entire body - yeap there goes the high of trying to survive as he tries to walk them out of there asap.]

Alright. I promise. Not a single peep out of me.

[The good news, that Minato would realize from speaking and being friends with Michel is he was always 100% truthful to a fault. If he promised he wouldn't say anything, he would not say anything. The bad news is if it would ever manage to slip out, it would be unconsciously without thinking. Fortunately, that was rare.]

I owe you like...food after this. Well after we clean ourselves up I guess but damn man. I thought you were something during our gaming sessions but looks like I was completely in the dark about you.

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-01-23 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He'll hold onto that promise, keeping his weapon out until the lights at the entrance of the subway come back into view and he can tuck it away. Only then he can relax, letting himself drag his feet as he walks. ]

Lots of things from games applies to life. I think I prefer games, though. Hurts less. You get second chances if you die.

[ Although having to repay the last two hours of a game several times every time you die also feels a little like dying itself. ]
deathboss: (Group - Oh hey Ta-chan)

[personal profile] deathboss 2018-01-23 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[It makes for great viewership, however.]

Yeah I get it bro...well no, not really since...[He stops himself. He made a promise and just shrugs instead.] Should we stop at my place? Parents are out filming something at some fancy-ass restaurant with a celebrity chef and siblings are probably off doing sports somewhere so we'd have the entire place to ourselves. Plus we can clean these stains off!

[There's probably something in his home to clean blood of clothing, he assumes.]

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-01-25 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
[ Next time, instead of starring in a gaming video, Minato might ask to tag along to a restaurant because??? his friends are all so rich and famous, why. But having an entire house to themselves is also a blessing because he doesn't have to worry about paying attention to everybody instead of just the two of them and whatever they're doing (aka trying not to look like murder victims) so he'll take this.]

Sure, let's go. We can play music without headphones. [ The best part about having a place all to yourself. ]
deathboss: (Grin - Yes too beautiful)

[personal profile] deathboss 2018-01-25 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Aww hell yeah, I've been wanting to crank up the volume to 11 when the folks ain't home.

[And not looking like murder victims is a nice bonus! Fortunately for them, the place isn't too far from their location and after a punch of numbers on the door's lock, INSIDE THEY GO.]

[It's okay Minato, technically, you are earning some money doing those videos with Michel anyway, you probably have a growing fanbase as the iron boy of steel next to Michel's screaming lungs.

But of course none of them know U R A SECRET SUPER HERO!!!!!]

Lemme get you some towels, you can use the guest room shower.

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-01-25 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ And none of them ever get to know!!! It's good that there's nobody else around, especially any camera crew following Michel's family wherever they go, because viewers will probably have questions seeing the two of them looking like they just got out of a fist fight. And lost. ]

Thanks. Fill the sink with cold water and let your clothes soak in there so the blood doesn't set into the fabric.

[ He heads inside the guest room, super careful not to bleed on anything because that'll be even tougher to get the stains out, and goes ahead and pulls his shirt off to dump into the sink, lowering the stopper and letting the basin fill with water. ]
