I was thinking that maybe they're dorm-mates that became somewhat friends through Kaeda having been in the tennis club at one point in the university and/or has helped Ava improve/keep up her grades through her tutoring...? WHICH SHE BECOMES FOREVER GRATEFUL OVER because she needs help balancing her sports star/crime fighting/school life.
