OCTOBER TEST DRIVE
The city of Recollé...

When the crypt doors creak, and the tombstones quake, spooks come out for a singing wake. Happy haunts materialize and begin to vocalize...grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize...

Every year during the Halloween season, the city of Recollé comes to life with plenty of fall activities for everyone. There's something to do in every district if one were to take a look.

What will you do today?

I.
Family fun seems to be the theme today over in Tribunal Terrace. Several tables are set up and in a semi-circle near Recollé Square with stacks of pumpkins, carving tools, paint and anything else you may need to create your own jack o'lantern. Other stations are set up for face-painting and games to win mini-sized candy bars including a ring toss, bowling, and bobbing for apples. Be careful with the apples though. They like to wiggle and jiggle with their happy little faces staring up out of the water.

...so maybe apple-bobbing is for the brave at heart. Are you the artsy type to carve a beautiful pumpkin? Are you helping to run the games (or even cheating to get more candy)? It's time to relax and let your creativity flow.

II.
Pumpkin-carving not your speed? Never fear, horror is here. Over in Tisse there's plenty to do for those looking for a little more adventure. Several coffee shops have harvest specials made with pumpkin, maple, and pecan flavors. Over at Flix a monster movie marathon and costume contest are taking place (with a prize of two free passes for the best monster costumes.) But the highlight of this district is the annual haunted funhouse.

Anyone daring enough will find the usual spooks and scares in a haunted house, jump scares and fog machines galore. But...the house certainly didn't look so big from the outside. How did you possibly get shuffled straight to the center? No worries. This hall of mirrors will guide you out safely...if the walls closing in don't crush you first. It's a race against time as the halls narrow, and if you're one of the lucky ones you'll escape and exit through the main doors.

For those not quite so lucky, the walls will stop just inches from crushing you completely before the floor drops open and you find yourself on a slide, falling through the dark and tumbling into an underground room filled with plastic skeletons, rubber spiders and more. There must be a way out, right? Hopefully you aren't alone and you can navigate the lair with a friend or two.

III.

Meanwhile, the rest of the city's usual hustle and bustle continues. The shopping districts are busy, students wander the sidewalks after class, and that oddly-shaped ghost appears right in the middle of the crowd.

Wait, what? You could have sworn that ghost wasn't there before. Maybe you don't even believe in ghosts. You may blink a few times to clear your vision, but the faint outline of the ghost remains as a few more of them pop up around the city. They won't speak, but they will cause some trouble for anyone who gets too close whether it's by playing pranks on passerbys, stealing items and running away, sitting on a person and applying a gravitational force so they can't move or other crafty, sneaky tactics.

Are the ghosts messing with you? Or are you going to find a way to mess with the ghosts?

IV.
As the sun begins to set, a strange sort of fog rolls in. Several citizens of the city may not even think it's unusual and others seem to capitalize on the weather. The Churchhill Downs Stables are hosting their annual haunted hayrides through Recollé Woods as soon as the sun sets. There are plenty of carts and chocobos saddled up and ready to go.

Once passengers are seated the chocobos begin to trot forward into the woods as a pre-recorded ghost tour of the city takes place. The stories range from silly ones about two ghost children who like to play hide and seek in these woods to scarier ones about a jilted lover chasing her husband off a cliff at the edge of ocean. For the most part they're a bit cheesy and in good fun, but something about this haunted ride seems a bit...off. Peering into the fog you may see something strange that follows you, be it a monster or a shadow or an object. You may hear things whispering your name and you may see your greatest fear manifest right out of the fog and chase your cart through the woods. Even worse, it seems to follow you right out of the woods and back into the city. No matter where you run or where you hide, the fears from the fog will track you down and they change for every single person in the city.

Will you run or will you fight? You may wish to be careful since the creatures will fight back.

BONUS.
With only a few short weeks left until the end of October, Retrospec's Halloween Mode is in full swing and popping up on new users' devices. Retrospec users will find their application decked out in cheerful Halloween colors, and their userpics in a randomized (work safe) costume. However, there's always a trick to each treat and this time the seasonal mode can't be turned off for new users. Notifications chime with zombie groans, a rousing game of Candy Crush must be played and beaten before you can use your device again, and the new Trick or Treat function has a few upgrades. When a user enables this function, they will be met with the phrase "Trick or Treat?" Users who select "treat" will get one virtual candy! Yay! The catch though is that they will also find themselves in a costume representing that specific candy.

Should a user pick "trick", however, they will find all sorts of harmless but unpleasant things happening to them including but not limited to pranks, being splashed by vehicles driving through puddles of water, being unable to speak in anything but rhymes and other such things. None of these effects last over ten minutes, but the game will show up periodically over and over again and even giving you the option to play the game with others.

I see! I've never really done things like that since I'm always so busy...

[ With the whole work as an heiress, but she keeps that out of the picture. It's not important. ]

And okay, but if you get hurt, I'll have to be the one who has to clean up the mess afterwards.

But.... things have gotten to a point where I need to keep a low profile. Mom's doing good for herself at the DA's office, and I don't wanna mess that up for her.

[Because, even though she makes a lot of bad choices, at the end of the day she really does love her mom and she would do anything to make things right for her family.]

Professor Carter!

[This is exactly who you wanted to see to save you from unwanted social interaction, right? Shuji inserts himself between Howard and the children.]

Professor Carter's not a vampire, he's even cooler than a vampire. He's an author.

[As predicted, the children find this super boring.] Laaaaame.

If you stay here I'll tell you all about his books about shipwrecks, and old history...

[Rather than suffer through a lecture about broken boats, the children scatter immediately.]

D-Daisuke!?

[Book momentarily forgotten, Bruno rushes to Daisuke's side. He waves his hand at the ghost, attempting to shoo it off of Daisuke's head...]

Are you all right?

[Bruno briefly smiles at the kid, before he pauses, because while he has plenty of strong suits?

Art is, uh, not one of them.]

I cannot say. I have not made many attempts at it before.

"Right. Unlike me, you still have family worth protecting. You should hold onto that, then."

[God knows it was something Maggie herself had never gotten, so... she was at least glad Mattie had that. Still, the DA's office? So her mother was in law, huh? Really raised some questions as to why someone like that would ever end up going for that man but, she'd gotten her sense back eventually, it seemed. And the heart itself wasn't a very logical thing anyways,s o she could sympathize with the woman.]

I believe that normally they don't have faces... the ones here are just a special case.

[ as if that makes it any better. ]

[Yeah, uh.]

... I beg your pardon, but I believe that only makes this worse.

[It was only after the misbegotten affair that led to her existence that Mattie's mother became interested in working in Law-- not as an attorney but as a paralegal. It was a decent job that wasn't dissimilar from the secretarial work she had been doing for Mayvin before that affair, and the pay was good enough to sustain them without needing to rely overly much on the money given to them by that man.]

But...aren't you too young to be talking like that? [Mattie asked.] You said you're a playwrite, but you look way, way too young!

Too bad-- you're missing out!

[She flashed the girl a grin.]

Don't worry. I won't leave you any mess to clean up. Mattie Camlann takes care of her own messes.

Iiiii mean, I'm helping? [Is he that much of a pushover they're counting on him forever? Is that really where we're at?]

Ah, Schneider. [Wait no, that's too formal.] I mean. Rean. Rean. I'm Rean. Rean. Schneider is, it's my last name.

I - Face painting, Sephora style

[That's right: one of the face painters is actually doing full faces of makeup, complete with highlighting and contouring, which explains the handful of people walking around with glamorous but also slightly airbrushed-looking faces. Ren can also do themes and costume makeup, of course, but no simple tiger stripes or cheek butterflies for him. No sir.

At the moment, he's got one client (getting a simple and striking makeup mask) and one bystander watching closely. To the client seated in front of him, he says:]

No, of course it's no problem if you keep flinching - just as long as you don't mind wearing your false eyelashes as lipstick. You can call it avant garde.

[To the bystander:] Are you next? I'll give you a discount on whatever design you like if you know how to sit still.

II - The God of whine

[There are few things in life more embarrassing than being dropped in some sort of dungeon full of cheap, ugly Halloween decorations whilst wearing a Bacchus costume that means a) your shitty sandals cause you to lose your footing and land on your ass at the bottom of the slide, and b) you definitely flashed everyone else in here when you did it, but...

... there's no but. This is just the most embarrassing thing that's happened to Ren in quite awhile. He smooths the bottom of his costume back down with all the decorum he can muster, adjusts his grape headdress, and lifts his eyes disdainfully to whoever might have seen him crash land.]

Don't pretend that didn't give you a thrill.

Wildcard!

[Ren could be at any of the events, stalls, etc looking rather bored because he's been to every Recolle seasonal event since he was born - influential families need to be seen as involved in their community, after all. I'm good with whatever!]

Maybe you can pretend you're just giving the apple a kiss?

[ that's also not helping. ]

"It's complicated."

[She doesn't know if Mattie is on the app or not, so it's best she not get into it until she has some proof.]

"But what can I say? I don't have any family I know outside of our dad, besides you of course. And you are well aware of how he is. So I guess, it makes more sense to say I have one family member worth protecting!"

[She says that mainly just to tease Mattie a little, but there is a hint of sincerity there.]

[Maggie, of course, thanks to her abilities, can still see the ghost. She has encountered ghosts for a while now, even before this month, and she has adapted surprisingly quickly to them being a part of her normal, daily life. And while she chuckles a bit at Charity's reaction, she mostly just sighs. How typical of her neighbor to be doing this.]

"Would you relax? It's just a ghost. They're all over the place now, have been since the beginning of the month. Of course, I could try and kill it for you, if you would just let go of me."

[ yeah...nazuna's not gonna let him go so easy, either.

he beams, and it's the innocent smile of "you're not getting away from me." ] I'm sure you'll be great at it! It's easy. All you have to do is paint half of his face red, and then put some blue stripes on it.

[ nazuna tilts his head down towards his little reference book, then turns that innocent smile up to eleven. ] You'd be a life saver.

i.

[ Junpei is not the most artistic person in the world, so for his Jack O'Lantern, he's trying to go for something easy. And since pumpkins are basically almost round, and there's plenty of paint around, he figures a soccer ball is as good an idea as any.

...Never mind that it doesn't involve any actual carving, so it's missing the lantern part. Don't burst his bubble, okay? ]

ii.

[ Two free passes for some silly monster movies isn't a bad prize, so Junpei figures he might as well enter the monster contest today. The only problem is that he doesn't really have a monster costume per se. The closest thing he has is an old T-rex outfit that still fits, but that might not meet the criteria on its own...

So he'll show up with his modified T-rex costume, complete with pool noodles taped on to provide random "tentacles" and cardboard horns on the head. Basically, it looks like he went through his garage and threw on anything he could think of... which is probably true. But the way he sees it, that's enough. ]

Hey, this totally counts as a monster costume! If nothing else, it's a monstrosity...

[She awkwardly forces a laugh as he mentions how her decision was smart. Still seems more embarrassing to her, but she apriciates that he's being nice aboug it. But his next question... the half-smale turns into a puzzled look as she considers what he's saying.

All month? No way, she can confirm that she's never seen anything like what just happened. She raises an eyebrow as she brings up her hand to tap on her chin. If this was anyone else, she would be concerned that they were having a mental breakdown. But this was Terra! He... He obviously wasn't lying, but what on earth was he trying to say?]

I mean... yes I'd like an explanation. Are you feeling alright? [she nibbles on her lower lip for a second] You're really saying that was a... a ghost?

[ an hour...?? jesus. this poor kid...he must have been really, really tired. ]

Right... there has to be a way out, right? I guess falling in here meant we lost. [ nazuna turns the flashlight back on on his phone, illuminating the prop filled room. ] What's your name?

[Lbr: probably.]

Ahaha...so Rean Scheneider then?

[Shit, he's never had to actually do this in person before? It's usually over the network with a ton of supplementary information being thrown around for people to piece together in the safety of their own bed.

Now, he's all she has. And even worse, she's someone he actually cares about. Yikes.]

Not the ghost of someone who was alive, or anything like that, I don't think. It's just...a weird being? [Gods, this is difficult.] Here, to make it easier, I'm going to use my clairvoyance.

Take out your cell phone. There's an app that wasn't there before. It's called Retrospec. If you try to delete it, you won't be able to.

(OOC: I got in a little late to make an AU Workshop post, but I'm assuming a bit of CR here, if it's cool? Hikage's an orphan who's done tons of, uh, streetgang-type stuff, so she'd probably be familiar with Charity through the Boys and Girls' club. Been through their programs for juvenile offenders, that kind of thing.)]

[Hikage stares at the offered carving knife for a good five, ten seconds. Her fingers tap against the sides of her jeans. She reaches up, rubbing at the back of her neck.]

... Hey, Ms. Barnes. [She glances over her shoulder, awkwardly mulls over the nothing she sees for another ten seconds.

Slowly, she leans in. She's making a point of leaning in and to the side, away from the carving knife. Sure, it's pretty dull and has a spooky bat pattern on the handle.
Frankly, it's more of a carving spoon, but.]

... Is this a sting operation? My probation officer was just saying how good I've been. [She's been busted for carrying knives before. Also, for stabbing a guy with a knife. Cut her some slack.]

"What? N-No, don't kill anything--"

[she abruptly cuts herself off as she comprehends what Maggie just said. Let go... oh god, she had grabbed on to her. Blushing furiously she lets go]

"I'm so sorry, that was rude of me, I just--" [she turns around frantically, trying to get another glimpse of the ghost. But he's... she doesn't see him. And everyone else is just walking as if nothing happened? She looks back at Maggie and lowers her voice to a whipser]

"What are you talking about?"

"Ghosts exist now. You just saw one. And I can remove it from existence for you if you're too scared of it."

[She says it with stunning casualness, even though she is well aware it is anything but to other people. Oh the things being on Retrospec will do to your sense of normalcy. Oh what terrible, terrible things. But being normal was overrated anyways, in her opinion, so it didn't much matter whether she lost that sense.]

[He's... being serious. She watches him closely as he talks. No dialiation in the eyes, he wasn't sweating, nothing about him seemed feverish, or twitchy, or out of sorts. Just... Terra. Talking to her like he would on any other day. A million more questions buzz in her mind like bees, but she clamps her mouth shut. She's putting all of her efffort into forcing herself to shut up and pay attention. He wouldn't joke so seriously like this, and the least she can do is... well, take him seriouslly]

Clairvoyance-- [she lilts the end of the word as if it was a question, but she doesn't follow it up with more words, and instead pulls out her phone as instructed. She's not great with technology, and her older phone is a bit sluggish, but after a second of searching, she sees it. As promised... Retrospec.] I see it. Um, I'll open it? [her eyes flick up at Terra as she waits for the app to load]
