Yato is a reformed(...??????) delinquent who is also a hobo so he spends a lot of time on the streets. Maybe he catches her doing graffiti sometimes and gives her brutally honest unsolicited commentary? He's Been There Done That with gang business so he probably sees her as such a kid, real gang or not... but a precious kid
