for a bit of dumb AUing philosophy that's super rambly but hey, i rp dirk, what do you expect: to me, the point of memregain AUs is to try out things differently, imo, and that works differently for a character like Dirk vs if I wanted to play someone like Kyouya. For Kyouya, because he's close enough to life, I'd want to think about an altenrate path and sort of play the realization of the path he's on vs the host club path, and who that makes him and what he wants to be. For Dirk, because his canon is so vastly weird and abnormal, there's some of that but the desire was less to change him in a major way than to contextualize him differently and see him respond to witnessing the contextualization. So I tried really hard not to change Dirk where possible, and instead make the differences ones of context. He still has depression, but since he grew up in a normal atmosphere it's not 'wow i will never live up to my amazing brother who died a hero, and years of physical isolation have turned me into a Harlow monkey,' it's just normal depression that people get and the ensuing anxieties, self-loathing issues, etc, grounded in the same problems but made more mundane. He's still has control freak impulses, but they're tempered by, you know, an understanding of acceptable behaviour and that sending a robot to train someone but not letting them control it would not?? be acceptable?

I wanted this especially to be true of Dirk (there are characters I'd AU from fantastical to mundane while also changing characterization more) because of Dirk's aspect as a Heart player and the idea that Dirk should be very constant in key ways without major outside influence (probably. who fucking knows about Cal). So in a lot of ways, I've tried to not make Dirk different, and only sort of sand off a lot of the extremities thanks to proper socialization and a good support network. That's really the biggest difference between canon Dirk and recolle Dirk: recolle Dirk is not trapped in Homestuck. So it doesn't make him feel that different to play, except remembering to reduce certain elements, but it has meant that very different stories are being told here than in other things i do with dirk.
