Real answer though, I think it was deciding what I wanted his Thing to be if not cycling. YOU SAW MY PROCESS AND MY DILEMMA SOMEWHAT, I'm transparent. There were ideas that ranged from "lack of direction and drive where midousuji degenerates completely" to "complete sense of purpose likened to canon" in my planning process, but I ended up wanting to go with something where things are... very much the same, but the circumstances are kind of better? because those few tweaks I made makes regains more exciting. There was a delinquent AU, a bike gang AU, a fashion model AU (which is STILL funny to think about, good god), an actually-mediocre-athlete AU, a Perfectly Adjusted No-Problems AU where Midousuji's still a rotten egg because that's in his nature but he just did things differently... I forget it all.

There were so many AUs and yet I picked this one. These sound more interesting than what I picked, I'm sure. I ended up picking this one because it made the most sense to me to get a personality closest to his canon personality while still making the process of regaining his history interesting. But it was really, really difficult for me to decide what would work best.

A QUESTION FOR YOU: what memory of Jade's are you most excited to regain for her, and what kind of impact do you think the memory would have on her?

ahaha i think i told you this at some point, but i simply adore the au you went with. i think it achieves exactly what you described while also giving you an amazing point for development; obviously midousuji has a lot more potentials for a true support system and i'm definitely watching him in game. i've always loved your akira but seeing where you take him with an au that'll force him to examine his options like this by giving him another way to connect to his Reason For Yellow is exciting; you've always done an excellent job with portraying his relationship with his mother.

HMMM... that's a hard question, because homestuck is homestuck, and i don't think jade ever really got a break in her canon lmao. for jade herself, i'd really love her for her to deal with her feelings of loneliness in canon. as such, the three year journey she did on her own is near the top of my list, and i'm curious to see if this would launch her into a depression like in canon and force her to deal with her friends and family trying to be close to her or just result in her being super clingy. AS YOU MAY REMEMBER, sometimes what i plan out may not be what happens icly, depending on things. rp characters are so fickle. that said, i'm also hella looking forward to any grimbark related memories i can get because her mother in game - elizabeth from bishock - has a similar experience. [s] game over didn't help with any healing FOR ME PERSONALLY, so. i really want to see some kind of healing for jade from that; it's obviously a big thing to be, you know. possessed and used to hurt everyone you care about only to die like the wicked witch in the wizard of oz, so i think that'd be both a way for jade to get much needed discussion about her feelings. she's very bad at that because jade doesn't rock the boat toooo much on her friendships. i think that'd be an interesting way to get her to confront that. that said, i think the aforementioned three year journey regain would be able to do that, too, just in a different way.

do you have any hopes for akira in game? are there any things you want to specifically touch on for him, whether it's because you think it'd be interesting or just because yo wanna?

When I read Homestuck, Jade was definitely my favorite of the kids, but your portrayal of her is opening my eyes to a lot of the stuff I missed; I wasn't SUPER invested in keeping track of her story on the level of Top #1 Fav Of All, which explains why I missed so much, considering... Homestuck is a LOT to digest and just as much as there's all that text, there's also a lot to pick up on behind the scenes.

That being said, those are A+ memories. I can see that long journey alone manifesting in either option. You COULD plan that out, but HAHA... planning. I'm sure the answer will become clear based on whatever events are surrounding her in-game come the time for her to regain the memory. It may even be something you aren't expecting because rp characters. Jade really never catches a break, but maybe she can catch a break in Recollé... ? ? ?or maybe things will continue to be ruff for her and it'll be another losing game


re: hopes, I'm not sure. I want to see what kind of dilemma arises for him once he realizes a great number of truths about his canon existence. I'm looking forward to combining his canon outlook vs. his AU outlook to see what kind of mess it makes. Neither rendition of Midousuji are good people, but AU Midou is on a path to studying medicine, which is a path intended by nature to aid others. Canon Midou has maybe... three moments that I can think of off the top of my head that are even remotely close to being considered "aiding others", and even then two of them could be considered To His Benefit. My guess right now is that Midou would toss being a doctor right out the window and go back to his usual, but that's only if he realizes that the source of his AU "drive" is missing from the picture. SO THE SHORT ANSWER IS memory regains, but memory regains considering the CR he's built before he goes in too far.

Do you have a favorite track for Jade from any of the Homestuck albums? There are so many albums. at one point i must have been so into hs i bought 11 of them, good lord... IF THE ALBUMS AREN'T YOUR THING/you haven't gone there, do you have a favorite song to associate with her?

It's a terrible but hilarious thought. I mean, unless you have him modeling all of the REALLY WACKY you'd-only-see-this-on-the-runway things... I got the idea from Xander who plays Jade actually (specifically, Goth Model Midousuji Akira), but I just couldn't do it because that kind of seems like torture to people in this good city of Recollé.

The idea went kind of like this: young, impressionable Akira is complimented on his smile which happens in canon, except instead of talking about how it would look good on an athlete his mother just says it's really photogenic. However, uhhh... BIG GAP HERE because I never got far enough to think about it, but some way or another his photo is used for something... remarkable enough to kickstart this interest in modeling. Getting his picture taken, since his teeth are so great, I guess. In this way, his mother's pride in seeing a professional pic of Akira would get him to keep doing something that made her proud. Then Yowamushi Model happens whether we wanted it or not. Midousuji's hugely critical and manipulative in his modeling career and nobody likes him.

Needless to say, expecting to AU something like this while simply writing in his app that Midousji's a ~well-known model~ or whatever didn't make sense to me, being that he's obviously so Drop Dead Gorgeous. He'd be too much for anybody to handle. I constantly joke about it because it's so absurd.

AND FOR YOU: Man... Ryoji's AU backstory reads so well to me, even though I'm largely canonblind. Did you have any alternative ideas for AUs for Ryoji, and if so, what made you settle on this one?

Hilarity trumps all haha. I sure was imagining Goth Model Midousuji Akira! With dark eyeshadow and large feathered shoulder pads and sweeping robes /o\ Smile model though... Akira should smile more in this game, be happy!!! All of that is so great though, like, if we ever have an AU AU event, I hope to see something like this for characters being as over the top as their can, haha

I actually learned about Recolle the day reserves went up so in between then and apps was me scrambling to get samples and I went the easy route of trying to draw parallels between canon and AU :') So a lot of it is my trying to keep him as close to canon as possible! e.g. causing a car accident, being surrounded by death, and generally being an overly optimistic person when he doesn't have memories/guilt of being Death to weight him down. I think the only other AU I entertained for more than five minutes is a play off his username and making him an antique appraiser running some sort of pawn shop around town, which had nothing to do with his interests or personality so I made him a wandering bum instead.

re. your app, is there a reason why you decided to keep Akira as close to canon as possible? My case was laziness... also because I wanted to play canon Ryoji and not super different AU Ryoji P:

AU AU EVENT........ my god. a perfect opportunity for over-the-top, I'd take it. Midousuji has a penchant for wearing stupid skull accessories, chains, and dark colors in official promo art so a lot of fanart is produced that would work well for this, I'm sorry to report.

THAT EXPLAINS WHY YOU WERE TAGGING IN LATER THAN MOST... Nonetheless I was excited to get a tag from you. That would be an interesting direction to take him in wrt your other AU idea. But paralleling significant events with something more realistic like car accidents and watching the natural cycle of things take its course makes sense.

The reason I kept him as close to canon as possible was because I'm never one to take any interest in any AU genres. I usually avoid AU games, but the regain mechanic in this game sold me on it. I just want to play Midousuji as Midousuji. I would have left his backstory almost exactly the same except in Recollé, but if I'm gonna be given the opportunity to AU him I figured I may as well. So my reason was kind of similar to yours in that I just wanted to play Midousuji the way he is in canon, but any changes are there so that I can interact with the setting and have meaningful regains, hence why I changed what I did and made Midousuji still envious of athletes but resentful of them all the same.

I went and tried to comprehend Ryoji's wiki (HAVING NO EXPERIENCE WITH PERSONA/SMT MADE THIS A TRIP, what is going on) and it compels me to wanna look into P3. If you had suggestions on where to start, how would you? Any playthroughs that you would recommend, or anything like that?

LAUGHS YEAH I was really happy/appreciative that people were open to new tag-ins to their tdm top levels when they've probably moved onto focusing on apps instead, so!!! :')

haha, Ryoji's wiki sure is a trip, especially since he has like four reincarnations and P3 itself has different versions of the game (original P3, a release P3:FES, P3P with the female protagonist route that Minako is from). The game takes roughly 50 hours to play through, so that's not the most feasible way to start, although it's the best. I'm not familiar with youtube lps, but I'd suggest watching a playthrough of either the original P3 or P3:FES (The Journey) for the story experience, and optionally P3P with the female route for a better appreciation of the characters. I think the movies are well done and can be watched and enjoyed without prior knowledge of the game, but parts of it are definitely glossed over and might not make a whole lot of sense if you aren't familiar with it; also, a lot of Ryoji's scenes in the movie are don't actually happen in the game. There's a manga too, but that also assumes prior knowledge because the beginning is a mess and the story is told out of order somewhat P:

tl;dr play or watch P3:FES to start! Specifically one with a "max social link" run; TheOrigamiGamer has a let's play, that I haven't watched so can't vouch for the quality but it goes until almost the end of the game before he stopped. After where it leaves off though is the boss battle and end of the game, so that's easy to find separately.

I am terrible at helpful recs I'm sorry, haha /o\ Minako's player might be more helpful to ask!
