man that is absolutely an unfair question, but still a good one; it's probably not a surprise that i have a strong jade bias, so most of my favorite tracks are jade tracks! narrowing it down is pretty hard, but i'm gonna go with the beginning of something really excellent because [s] jade: dream up extra arms and play advanced bass solo was definitely when i knew this kid was gonna be my fave.

are there any scenes in canon that inspired larxene's au in particular?
rhapsodeity: (carried away)

THIS ISNT MY QUESTION BUT OK but i want to know what. game that was? i swear i played in a high school au game, too, so maybe we ran across each other before!

there are a few big regains i can't wait to get - memregain wise, there's the fight with jack that ended up with jade killing dave by accident at the top of my list, but i'm also curious about getting back the three year journey she did by herself, and poooootentially grimbark, if that'll check out. the latter of which is something i'm particularly interested in due to who jade's mom is in game, aaahaha. item wise i really cannot wait to get back a few things but her lunchtop is at the top of my list, and the wardrobifier, if i can swing it. powers and appearance wise, i've mentioned her dog features (they're too cute not to...) but i cannot wait to get her eyes back. judging by how magnified her eyes are when she wears them, they're a heavy prescription, and none of her cr who has gotten their eyes back have had any problems with their vision. i can't wait to be bad.

but other that that i have a big interest in her teleportation just because the shenanigans that can ensue are. excellent. space powers are op, but i just want to use them for silly things at the moment, ahaha. THIS IS A LOT. i apologize.

we both know this but larxene's a villain in her canon; do you foresee her going down that nefarious path in game again, or is it more hazy?

Totally been meaning to ask, but I'm dense. Where'd you take Jade from in canon?
rhapsodeity: (my dear old friend)

[personal profile] rhapsodeity 2017-03-15 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
post canon! it was actually a pretty tough decision, because [s] game over was the moment i knew this series had my heart for better or for worse and i really would have loved to toy with a post [s] game over jade, but there's ultimately too much i'd love to delve into with her from the entirety of the canon, so.

chloe's an interesting choice since kirika and mirielle are pretty much the poster assassins for the series - were there any scenes in canon that drew you to her?
true_noir: (Smile2)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-15 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
There's ... I want to say 3-5 wonderful spots to take a character from in the series, depending on the angle you're going for, so I know the feeling on how hard a decision it could be. But post game makes sense.

Chloe's always been my main muse from the canon. If I want to play a voice 'like' Kirika, I play as Rei Ayanami generally. I see characters like her as being partialy derivative of her personality, so I have trouble playing ones that aren't her (even if Kirika has a lot more in her head than Rei did.). Mireille simply isn't a muse for me. I love playing opposite her, but I don't generally lean towards characters like her.

But, if there's a scene that cemented my interest in Chloe back when I apped her to Amat years ago? It was the moonlit tea party, or the final build-up to her death. The aspects of her as a potentially redeemable, tragic but at the same time legitimately psychotic and unequivocably evil person made her much more interesting than a lot of deuterotagonists for me. It gave me a bit to work with when I joined Amat (though I was also tempted to app Rose in just because technically she was appable at the third book when I joined that game).

What's your favorite and least favorite character in the homestuck canon?
rhapsodeity: (what i got you need it)

[personal profile] rhapsodeity 2017-03-15 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
i always did enjoy the way chloe was just sympathetic at the end; it made for a really effective death scene - kajiura definitely didn't pull any punches with the soundtrack for the scene either!

on that note, one of my fave aspects of noir is the music, so are there any tracks you find yourself coming back to over time?

I want to ask this to every Homestuck player but. How do you keep the massive amount of the canon (and timelines!!!) straight when you play/reference things? Sometimes I want to reread it and canon review but am too daunted to get started haha
rhapsodeity: STARGAZER | siouxsie and the banshees (to the shore)

[personal profile] rhapsodeity 2017-03-15 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
HAHA it's a fair question, there's two retcons in series and while that includes the alpha kids' timeline, it doesn't really factor in the amount of stuff that happens during that time. i'll be honest, i didn't find homestuck too confusing? i probably had a suitable amount of prep though because i'm a long time when they cry fan, so timelines are actually one of my favorite story tropes. that said, it helps to think of a big event that happened in each time line or come up with a name for each of them; for example, for anything pre cascade, i refer to that as "before the scratch" and after cascade is what i just call "the reset" mentally? i don't think this is a fandom accepted term (i'm actually new to hs so lmao idk what the majority of fandom agrees on), but it helps me. "before the scratch" i think of as acts 1-4 which is easy enough, whereas "the reset" is all the intermission heavy stuff. alternatively, this is the Heartbreak Timeline, because, [s] game over,, after that is the retcon! separating it into three chunks helps me a lot, personally, and breaking it down like that means that you can quickly come up with chunks of references.

that said, a lot of it is also just constantly rereading lmao, the wiki has a bunch of links which make that incredibly easy these days - i don't know if it was a thing back when hs was first starting up as The Big DWRP And General Fandom Fad, but i find that if i'm ever struggling to find something, remembering what chunk of the story it occurred in and who jade said it to makes that a lot easier!

ryoji is really cute and i love seeing him around! he's a very forward character which i'm pretty curious about; were there any worries you had bringing him into the game, whether they were with adapting his canon self to be au or whether you could achieve the effect, so to speak, that you wanted with him in game? (i.e. just making him fun to tag - which he super is, i love our thread!)

[personal profile] appraiser 2017-03-15 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Constantly rereading is the largest hurdle I'd need to overcome haha. The last time I read HS, Jake was aggressively ironing his pants, that's all I remember lmao... I kept up with it for a long time before then, so it might just be easier to read through now that it's done and I don't have the long pauses between updates to forget things! The Wiki does make it easier too, especially having all the logs on the character pages that I didn't realize was a thing, thank you fandom for all these contributions.

And thank you! I've played Persona 3 many times through before, but I've never considered rping Ryoji until like... literally two days before Recolle reserves went up haha, so a lot of my worries is "Does Ryoji sound like Ryoji?" and whether he's too colored by manga/CD drama influences, but the AU aspect of this game alleviates a lot of that. aka mostly I do whatever I want. Adapting to AU wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be though, because his canon is basically him not having memories and regaining them over time, so I've been pretty happy keeping things parallel here!

[personal profile] rhapsodeity 2017-03-15 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
tbh it started out as a joke lucy made - we both wanted to enable jem and ray to join so we could get them to play with us, so i pestered them to app. but the more i thought about it the more i really fell in love with it; there's a lot of little parallels in their canons, i think, that make it work in such a way that i think regains will be a blast to play out. obviously bigby is the big bad wolf, so jade and him have that in common, but bigby's also associated with the cold (the wind, which his mother was sort of like a personification of, hence why he can huff and puff and blow your house down) which is also one of jade's motifs (she's not heavily associated with snow, but the cold in general comes up as a character thing for her) and on top of that, elizabeth and jade are both very much "princess in a tower" archetypes with near omnipotent powers - jade can bend all of space at her will and elizabeth can do very much the same. IN THE END, i think we picked the easiest way for all of us to come together and get the best possible cr we could with each other - it was a team effort that paid off beautifully, but it definitely was the fact that jade had a lot in common with the two of them that i think kind of sold us on it.

there's got to be at least one scenario that drew you toward apping jason to recolle - so what was it that sold you?

what's something about AU jade that you prefer to OU jade? alternately, a favorite jade quote?
rhapsodeity: STARGAZER | siouxsie and the banshees (Default)

[personal profile] rhapsodeity 2017-03-15 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
damn you got me first...

i'm gonna do both because i love both questions fuq u. anyway - there aren't a lot of differences? but, i am going to say that jade has a bit of a wolf pack thing to her thanks to growing up in such a tight knit family. the wolfs have been through a lot, and jade's very attached to her mother and father. she grew up alone in canon, so this is obviously a major difference. however, thanks to the part where her parents were both hard workers who had a bunch of a rough upbringing themselves, she's very, very protective of people she cares about to the point that she offers to walk her friends home if she's worried they might be in danger. i really like this aspect of her because i find it to be the thing that makes her the most obviously bigby and elizabeth's kid - or rather, the thing that makes her most obviously a version of herself with family.

my favorite jade quote is absolutely this one:

I REALLY ADORE THE IRONY IN GRELL'S AU. it is absolutely hilarious and fantastic, and i adore it. where do you think it'll take her - ultimately remembering that she's jack the ripper, that is?
erythristic: (gone.)

[personal profile] erythristic 2017-03-15 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
UGH THAT'S A GOOD JADE QUOTE....WHY'D I ASK FOR IT, I PLAYED MYSELF AND HURT MYSELF

i think that remembering all these things - and remembering the feelings and anger behind it - is going to definitely shift her from purely trying to help into someone who's more willing to be selfish and look out for herself instead of just pretending to be confident. i can't say it'll make her a killer, especially when she's spent a good portion of this life looking towards death and knowing how much it affects not just you but people around, but it'll ignite a lot of dormant morbidity, and while it's possible she could good end, CR and circumstances are going to be pivotal in seeing if she can really come to the conclusion that this is a new chance, a second life in true, instead of just falling into the grip of old habits and a very pessimistic outlook on the world under the surface. either she'll kill the past or the past will kill her, but we'll see how it goes.

jade's idea of a perfect summer day?

rhapsodeity: (they should worry)

[personal profile] rhapsodeity 2017-03-15 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
most jade quotes are excellent tbh. she's such a ball of sunshine. a close runner up was jade asking dave "so crowds are your thing like puppets are your bros thing?" because. jade why. why would you ever ask that

jade's idea of a perfect summer day is swimming in the river in the campgrounds! she'd definitely want to spend it outside and top it off with a popsicle just before sundown, at which point she'd just want to go home with cuddle with a doggo.

when you say "the past will kill her" what do you mean? is there a particular aspect of that you'd want to play out?

what would you say is the most polarizing difference between this jade and OU jade? in terms of personality, history, her world view..
rhapsodeity: (i feel a hint of morning)

[personal profile] rhapsodeity 2017-03-15 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
HM. polarizing, huh. i think the most polarizing thing is that she has absolutely no botany skills at all? in fact, jade doesn't really think of flowers in her au at the moment - it's a very big part of who she is in canon. when she stops growing things, it signifies that she's going through a strong depressive episode, but in game, this isn't a thing for her. it's kind of interesting playing around that, actually.

what aspects of dolly are you most looking forward to portraying?
estrays: (but you ain't been right yet)

[personal profile] estrays 2017-03-15 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
that makes me kind of sad.. do you think she'll get into botany again once she regains her memories?? will it effect her in any large way?

i'm looking forward to playing out dolly slowly becoming a robot again and dealing with that. i honestly am hoping to do some body horror-esque stuff with her in relation to her body and i'm REALLY looking forward to that tbh.. but i'm also interested in playing out her kind of dual personalities that she has going on, she's going to remember some pretty nasty stuff that's happened to her so i think that will definitely change her personality dramatically and i'm pumped for it

Before the Wolf family came together, did you have any AU plans for Jade already brewing that ended up not making the cut?
rhapsodeity: (and then i ask myself)

[personal profile] rhapsodeity 2017-03-15 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
i did! initially, i wasn't apping with jem and ray, so i had to figure out an au for jade that didn't involve bigs and liz. what i came up with mirrored canon pretty closely... but the major aspects of it were that jade was an heiress to a gun manufacturing company, and that her parents both traveled so much that she ended up opting to get her education in a boarding school (in scotland, because harry potter jokes, because jade's the WITCH of space hahaha). the main theme with this au was that i wanted to replicate how isolated jade was in canon; she grew up alone and on an island, which explains why she can be so weird.

were there any challenges in making yato's au? i'm only vaguely familiar with his canon (i keep getting it recced to me but i'm lazy.....im sorry) but it seems a lot of his identity hinges on him being a more....lower tier god, i guess? was that difficult to translate, or did you find that it worked itself out?
goen: ((•̀ᴗ•́)و ̑̑)

[personal profile] goen 2017-03-15 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
ngl I laughed at the witch of space joke... I'm glad that she is still living in such a gun-filled family now. :')

Yato's shitty bottom-tier god status in canon mostly manifests through him being extremely forgettable to humans, having to market himself heavily for wish-granting work, and living a largely solitary life on the streets (vs. big name gods, who have big entourages of retainers, lots of money from offerings, and big shrines or comfortable homes).

Making him some homeless dude for this AU was a pretty natural translation I think? The unfortunate reality is that most people tend to look away from the conspicuously homeless in everyday life, so Yato lives in a "blind spot" to people on the street in Recolle, much like in canon. In practice though it's been a little hard to maintain the integrity of his homelessness because people just keep feeding him and inviting them into their homes and trying to pay him well for his work, basically being REALLY NICE AND DECENT so lmfao. I guess it's just NPCs who really ignore him...

Does Jade have any insecurities about herself?
