Ah, you've misidentified the look. That is the look of a man who has spent a decade neck-deep in a highly-specific field that, as it happens, he is not working with, and in which most of his students have no interest.

But I am certainly not complaining.

so why'd you become a teacher then instead of staying in that field

For one, that field is almost entirely academia, so that would have been my fate regardless. For another, there are very few positions to be had in the field at all.
