JANUARY TDM - OVERFLOW
|
JANUARY TEST DRIVE The city of Recollé. A beautiful city with beautiful people. The place you call home. It's a wonderful home, isn't it? With everything you could possibly ever want right at your fingertips, why would you ever want to leave? In honor of this glorious city, the residents of Recollé are preparing for its annual Founder's Day celebration…you'll help out, won't you? I. Recollé Square is bustling with activity today and several residents are working together to pitch a large tent. Others are working together to decorate the fountain of the founders with flowers and streamers. Children and dogs run through the area and there's song in the air as everyone works together. Are you one of the people helping with the streamers? Or perhaps you're holding the ropes of the tent taunt so it doesn't blow away? Hey, maybe you're catering the whole event to feed those hard workers! The choices are endless…but you might want to catch those balloons that are starting to float away! II. Meanwhile in Chata, business is booming as everyone crowds the parking lot of Freshens trying to fight their way into the store. You really should have thought to buy your groceries much sooner. Everyone knows that Founder's Day is one of the best potluck days and, weather permitting, picnic days. Are you having any luck getting into the store? Is that the last rack of ribs? You better hurry and snag them! On the flipside, shop owners in Chata are busy setting up food stalls and merchandise tables in preparation of the main event. The smell of sweets and spices fills the air and you can't help but follow your nose to check it out. The vendors are all friendly and happy to give away samples of their goods in the hopes that you'll be back in a few days' time. Or maybe you're one of those vendors hoping to attract customers for Founder's Day. Do you have all of your supplies? Your permits? Is that teenager trying to steal apples from your produce stand? Everything's a little chaotic in the days before Founder's Day. III. The work doesn't stop there. Over in Tisse it's party central with flashing lights, sound tests, and a festive atmosphere that says the celebration's already started for several businesses. The line for Expressive is out the door with customers eager for their Founder's Day special. Be careful, you might have to finagle your way through the crowd. Throughout the day you may hear music and mic tests coming from the Atrium as the local schools work together during their dress rehearsal for the Founder's Day Pageant. You might even have an insider's look if you're one of the students in the pageant or one of the stage hands helping with last-minute set design, costume alteration or any of the other countless things that could go wrong. The employees at the boutiques inside the Towers are bustling as well, swapping their floor displays and handing out flyers and coupons to shoppers to encourage them to come back for their big sales. Maybe you are one of those employees and now you're dealing with some wicked papercuts, or maybe the smell of butter is seeping into your clothing as Flix opens its doors to an early marathon of historical films depicting the life and tales of the city. Tisse is most certainly the busiest of the districts today, but there's still so much to be done! IV. Most important of all, back in Tribunal Terrace residents will find Mayor Mayer out and about today which may seem unusual. The Mayor tends to stay inside City Hall keeping the city running from there, but today he's speaking with someone handling a large truck. People passing by may hear some scurrying from inside the truck, the sound of claws skittering on the metal floor, and…is that clucking? No, wait, now it's the sound of hoofs clomping and the whinny of a horse. What's going on in there? Maybe you should investigate and ask around. Employees working for the Mayor will only give you a strange look in response, and the Mayor himself is unavailable for commentary…but it can't just be your imagination, can it? Upon further examination and questioning residents will be told that these are horses for pony rides for the kids on Founder's Day, but that doesn't stop all of the weird noises. What on earth is going on? BONUS. Despite the festivities and the light-hearted mood of the city, it's still winter. Like all winters prior, it's chilly enough that you'll need a warm coat outside, but the storm season has passed. Instead, today in all districts there's a light flurry of snow falling, snowflakes gently twirling and landing on your shoulders and in your hair. It's not enough to stop the work, but it may send several people to crowd inside coffee shops for a hot drink or shops to take a break from the cold. Bet you weren't expecting that influx of business, were you? And later…much later, in fact, those carrying cell phones or tablets will feel a jolt from the device. A closer look will reveal that a new application has started to install itself on these devices, but you can't seem to open it right away. That's a bit odd, isn't it? It might be wise to check other devices in the city to see if the application's installed itself. Upon further investigation, though, you'll find only a handful of residents have the app installed. The app pops up on any public computer you may use but fades away the moment you log off. Strange, strange, strange. Once it fully loads on your device, you'll find that the app, Retrospec, appears to be a social media app with the option to friend people, share statuses, pictures, videos and more. Those sections are currently blocked out, however. Take some time to fill out your profile if you'd like; that portion of the application seems to be the only one that can be accessed currently. All other social media (Facebook, Twitter, and regular texting) are accessible, but the app itself stubbornly remains on your own profile page. Welcome to the All characters will be begin in-game AU'd as Recollé residents. You may use any of the above prompts for ideas or make up your own depicting your Recollé AU! Prompts do not have to be set in the districts listed above. You can review our list of locations for what's available. Please note that TDM threads can be used as samples, can be kept as game canon if both parties agree, and can also be used for bonus points for future item regains. (Additionally: we will not be allowing TDM threads to be used for memory regains.) Write as many or few prompts as you want, tag around, and have fun! As a reminder: as per our app rules, please try not to reference other characters in your threads or in your AUs if that character isn't being applied for! Our favorite example is as follows: if an Elsa from Frozen is being TDM'd, we ask that the player not reference her sister Anna by name unless an Anna is planning to TDM and be part of the same AU. Elsa can reference her younger sister in threads as much as she'd like if she has a sister in her AU, but we ask that names are not specified without having that character TDM'd and without the player's permission. Please also remember that posting to the TDM does not equate a reserve, which open on 1/18. The January 2017 TDM directory can be found here. The January 2017 Workshop can be found here. Vin | Mistborn (AU name Vanessa)
[She can't watch this anymore. One would think that doing something like holding onto balloons would be an easy enough task, right? But unfortunately for this poor soul it looks like that's gotten away from them. Like the whole bundle of balloons trying to drift up and away into the sky right now, only to be daunted by snagging on a clothesline high up above of all things. Several minutes of watching the panicky aftermath and she heaved a sigh, made her way over and set her backpack down.]
Make sure nobody takes that, okay?
[And with that simple request she backs up several steps then takes a running start, scrambling up the side of the wall high enough to snag on the first handhold. Pulling herself up, she grabs onto the next and just like that she's scrambling up the side of a wall toward the snagged balloons.
How does she get wrapped up in this stuff?]
[With that last request, she backs up]
Wild?
Oops. Sorry.
[The apology is brushed off with a curt grunt as the older man she'd bumped into carries on his way. Barely even paying attention to the tiny girl in the oversized black hoodie who had bumped him and then scurried off. He probably wouldn't think of her again for awhile either, not for at least a few minutes which was all the time she needed. Founder's Day was a good time for people like her. Everybody's too busy looking up to keep an eye on their wallets.
She's gone a safe enough distance before she quickly pockets any cash in there and ditches the wallet in a handy trash bin before she makes her way to the spot. There, she takes up a spot underneath a tree and keeps an anxious eye out, sharp eyes flickering this way and that as she watches the crowds and waits for somebody to approach her.]
Shit. Come on, hurry it up.
[Founder's Day or not, busy or not, there's still no time to be comfortable with a bag of whatever kind of illegal substance the buyer's after in her backpack. Money's money but the last thing she needs with her juvenile record is getting caught running drugs. Or pickpocketing for that matter.]
BONUS
[It's another winter. Winter is never a good time of year for her and even if this one isn't the harshest she's ever made her way through, it still isn't a walk in the park either. Actually a walk in the park would be pretty nice. Sleeping in the park would be too... maybe when spring comes around again.
For now, she'll take what she can get.
Vanessa doesn't exchange any words with the girl behind the counter as she dumps her handful of small change on the counter in exchange for the cup of steaming coffee. Though she does make sullen eye contact when the stranger gives her a look over in her frayed hoodie and jeans, and beaten up sneakers despite the snow on the ground. Whatever passes between them it isn't an invitation for conversation as there's none of that when Vanessa takes the cup and makes her way to a table against the far wall. Her worn old backpack she dumps on the floor beside her chair and pulls off her chewed up wool gloves to warm her hands on the hot cup. When her phone buzzes she gives a little sigh before pulling the cheap, disposable little flip thing out of her pocket and looking at it. Probably another run... it sucks if it is, given how fast the temperature is going down outside but she can't afford to turn down even the meager bit of cash she can get from-]
What the hell? [She frowns a bit, narrowing her eyes at the screen and giving the phone a little shake. Retrospec.]
Whatever. [She drops the phone to the table with a clatter and moves to sip from her coffee.] Just as long as nobody expects me to pay for it.
I
[Though she'd gotten some help, Rachel's lack of coordination and athleticism had kept her from retrieving all the balloons before they could end up snagged by the clothesline. She was in the middle of fretting over what to do, when suddenly, this other girl came out of nowhere and plopped a backpack next to where she was standing.]
Wait. What? Why are you telling me-
[Before she could answer however, she'd taken off, and Rachel was just left standing there, eyes wide as she watched the newcomer scramble up the side of the building. That... that was really impressive!]
no subject
She pauses a second to make sure her bag is still right where she left it before straightening and jumping, hands snagging the lip of that balcony. Her feet swing forward then back, building up the momentum needed to swing up onto it and hop the railing. From there, all she has to do is reel in the line.
Well, that, and get back down with one hand occupied by a bunch of balloons. Hm.]
Hey. [She calls back to the ground once the bundle is safely in her grasp, gesturing with her free hand.] Do you have something down there you can toss me to weigh these things down? I'll send them back to you.
no subject
... Uhm.
[She looks down, and after a moment, spies a rock. She reaches down to pick it up, and then looks back up at Vanessa.]
You'll... you'll be able to catch it, right?
no subject
okay, no, she's not on the job right now. Focus.]
What? [She gives an irritated sigh at the girl's mumble from down below and shakes her head, waving her free hand.] I can't here you. Just toss something!
[But can she even make the shot?]
I'll leave it up to you to see if she makes it
Nevermind! Here... here I go!
[Taking a deep breath, she closes her eyes... and then opens them again, stepping forward, and trying to lob the rock up at Vanessa.
Rachel's throwing arm is weak. But there's a chance... right?]
RNG was not with her
... Great.]
Nevermind. ... I'll find a way.
[There has to be something around here.]
no subject
N-No! Wait! Let me try again!
[She runs for where the rock fell, and scoops it back up. She looks back up at Vanessa, focuses... and tries to throw it again.
... This time she may have done it too hard. And from this angle, it's shooting straight up. Heaven help Rachel if she misses and it falls straight down at her this time.]
no subject
What? [And there's a rock sailing right past her and straight up into the air. She watches it complete its ascent and then... start dropping straight back down to where it came from. That being Rachel herself.] Hey! Watch out!
no subject
[Her voice cuts off the moment she hears Vanessa's warning. She begins to move, but it's too late - the rock ends up smacking her right in the back of her head, causing Rachel to just sort of crumple to the ground.
Yeah, that hurt. She's conscious, but she's disoriented and holy heck that hurt.]
no subject
Damnit.
[A heavy sigh and a quick climb down and she's standing over a dazed girl with a bunch of balloons tied up nearby. She could just... walk away. Pretend all this never happened, probably not have to try to explain the entire situation to an ambulance driver. There's not reason for her to get involved past this point. It's not her problem....
... Damnit.]
Hey. [And she's crouching down, reaching out to prod at the girl's arm.] Kid. You okay?
no subject
[The reply is pained, as Rachel tries to pull herself back up to her feet. She's still woozy, though. Still, a hand reaches up behind her head to feel for blood. She is a doctor's daughter, after all.
... Nope. Just the beginnings of a large bump.]
I... I'm not bleeding. I think I need to sit down though...
no subject
[She edges back a little when the girl starts getting back up, not really moving to help her though she remains prepared if the kid suddenly topples over. If anything, her concern goes to her bag first which she's quick to grab and shrug back onto one shoulder.
Though almost as an afterthought she lets out a sigh through her nose and turns back to the younger girl.] Do you... want to sit there or do you need help finding a bench or something?
no subject
A-A bench... I shouldn't sit in the middle of the street like this...
no subject
Or at least one that just got knocked on the head by a rock. That she asked her to throw in the first place.
God. Damnit.]
Good point. [Sighing again, she gets the other shoulder strap of her bag in place and takes hold of Rachel's arms to heft her up. Vanessa isn't the biggest or strongest around but she's strong enough to get somebody at least equally as slight up on her feet.] Let's find you somewhere better to sit down.
no subject
Th-thank you. That's twice you've tried to help me just now...
no subject
Well, the first one didn't turn out that good so I thought I'd make up for it.
no subject
[Her mother warned her about those types of people. She's so glad Vanessa doesn't seem to be that type of person. Right?
In any case, she takes the opportunity to sit down, removing her glasses in order to rub her eyes. Once that's done, she blinks a few times.]
... Well, my vision isn't blurry, so I'm pretty sure I'm not concussed...
no subject
She wasn't expecting help to arrive in the shape of this woman, that's for sure. Or her request as she plops that backpack down.]
Uh, alright, but what are you--
[And she's already gone. Victoria's left to watch this mysterious woman nimbly scale the building like it's nothing.
And she is dumbstruck.]
.... Whoa.
no subject
She's quick too, scrabbling up the side until she stops onto a somewhat precarious perch several feet up. One foot on a windowsill and the other on the metal railing but it's just enough that she can start to reach out and try to catch hold of that string.
That is until she catches the jawdropped look of the girl beneath her. She glances downward then back up before calling down.]
You're going to catch me if I slip, right?
no subject
Honestly, it's not everyday you see someone doing parkour as hardcore as this. At least that holds true for Victoria. Here she was, standing around, while another girl was literally climbing a building to catch a balloon. Oh, if she could just be like that...
Her thoughts are snapped out of her when she hears the woman speak.]
What-Me? Catch... [Wait. shit.] I mean, yes of course! Count on me!
no subject
That was a joke. [Too far. She glances down at her feet, judging the amount of space she has to work with before shuffling forward a few inches. A little smirk appearing on her face.] I don't fall.
[Just a little further. She stretches her hand out a bit further and finally her fingers close around the string.]
Got it.
no subject
Y-yeah. I knew that.
[No she didn't. She absolutely just screwed this up, and now she's going to be standing here like a absolute nerd and not know what to do about it.
But. Hey. She got the balloon. Thumbs up.]
Greeaat...
wildcard.
[ Founder’s Day just so happens to be an ideal night to spin her web of operations out a bit further, and exploit the holiday cheer with a pervasive mood of cynicism and pessimism that Aranea finds incredibly difficult to contain. She knows that she’s late to the meeting place, but it’s been a pretty and drawn out day off socializing. Her excuses are shallow and possess no depth, but that doesn’t really matter to Aranea at all.
When the tall woman, clad head-to-toe in black, emerges from the crowd, she looks pointedly in Vin’s direction for one split second, before her attention meanders elsewhere. She walks almost purposelessly from the sidewalk to the area under the tree. This is the first time she’s meeting the girl, who was hired to retrieve these illegal goods through an associate of hers. Came highly recommended, and Aranea didn’t find anything questionable about the proposition. This was normal, after all. As long as the product ended up in her hands, she'd be satisfied. ]
Hey. [ Even though there are drugs concealed between them, the makings of a crime, her approach remains casual. Aranea supposes she'll also have to prove that she's the one, but she'll get to that later. With no nerves, just a hint of professional concern when she asks — ] How’d it go?
no subject
[She'd once heard it said that one way to make good money was to find something that nobody else wanted to do and then do that thing for a fee. In her case, that thing had turned out to be taking the risks that nobody else wanted to. She's quick, smart and she has far more to gain than to lose from this kind of arrangement, as long as the money's right.
It also helps that she doesn't cut much of a noticeable figure. A head shorter than most people in the crowd, skinny and dressed in a drably plain hoodie and jeans, hair cut short she's far from the center of anybody's attention.
Still, waiting here with a package like this burning a hole in her backpack is beginning to be a little stressful, so it's a relief when somebody finally comes her way. She doesn't have much to go on, just a vague description, but she'll verify easily enough.]
Hey. [She returns the greeting, pushing away from her lean. Sharp eyes scan over the taller woman though her bearing doesn't shit from that of a simple meeting between two acquaintances. Not a bit of nerves showing on her. Professional. She shrugs.] Kind of a long walk but I didn't have any trouble finding the place.
