JANUARY TDM - OVERFLOW

TEST DRIVE
JANUARY TEST DRIVE
The city of Recollé. A beautiful city with beautiful people. The place you call home. It's a wonderful home, isn't it? With everything you could possibly ever want right at your fingertips, why would you ever want to leave?

In honor of this glorious city, the residents of Recollé are preparing for its annual Founder's Day celebration…you'll help out, won't you?

I.
Recollé Square is bustling with activity today and several residents are working together to pitch a large tent. Others are working together to decorate the fountain of the founders with flowers and streamers. Children and dogs run through the area and there's song in the air as everyone works together.

Are you one of the people helping with the streamers? Or perhaps you're holding the ropes of the tent taunt so it doesn't blow away? Hey, maybe you're catering the whole event to feed those hard workers! The choices are endless…but you might want to catch those balloons that are starting to float away!

II.
Meanwhile in Chata, business is booming as everyone crowds the parking lot of Freshens trying to fight their way into the store. You really should have thought to buy your groceries much sooner. Everyone knows that Founder's Day is one of the best potluck days and, weather permitting, picnic days. Are you having any luck getting into the store? Is that the last rack of ribs? You better hurry and snag them!

On the flipside, shop owners in Chata are busy setting up food stalls and merchandise tables in preparation of the main event. The smell of sweets and spices fills the air and you can't help but follow your nose to check it out. The vendors are all friendly and happy to give away samples of their goods in the hopes that you'll be back in a few days' time. Or maybe you're one of those vendors hoping to attract customers for Founder's Day. Do you have all of your supplies? Your permits? Is that teenager trying to steal apples from your produce stand? Everything's a little chaotic in the days before Founder's Day.

III.
The work doesn't stop there. Over in Tisse it's party central with flashing lights, sound tests, and a festive atmosphere that says the celebration's already started for several businesses. The line for Expressive is out the door with customers eager for their Founder's Day special. Be careful, you might have to finagle your way through the crowd. Throughout the day you may hear music and mic tests coming from the Atrium as the local schools work together during their dress rehearsal for the Founder's Day Pageant. You might even have an insider's look if you're one of the students in the pageant or one of the stage hands helping with last-minute set design, costume alteration or any of the other countless things that could go wrong.

The employees at the boutiques inside the Towers are bustling as well, swapping their floor displays and handing out flyers and coupons to shoppers to encourage them to come back for their big sales. Maybe you are one of those employees and now you're dealing with some wicked papercuts, or maybe the smell of butter is seeping into your clothing as Flix opens its doors to an early marathon of historical films depicting the life and tales of the city.

Tisse is most certainly the busiest of the districts today, but there's still so much to be done!

IV.
Most important of all, back in Tribunal Terrace residents will find Mayor Mayer out and about today which may seem unusual. The Mayor tends to stay inside City Hall keeping the city running from there, but today he's speaking with someone handling a large truck. People passing by may hear some scurrying from inside the truck, the sound of claws skittering on the metal floor, and…is that clucking? No, wait, now it's the sound of hoofs clomping and the whinny of a horse.

What's going on in there? Maybe you should investigate and ask around. Employees working for the Mayor will only give you a strange look in response, and the Mayor himself is unavailable for commentary…but it can't just be your imagination, can it?

Upon further examination and questioning residents will be told that these are horses for pony rides for the kids on Founder's Day, but that doesn't stop all of the weird noises. What on earth is going on?

BONUS.
Despite the festivities and the light-hearted mood of the city, it's still winter. Like all winters prior, it's chilly enough that you'll need a warm coat outside, but the storm season has passed. Instead, today in all districts there's a light flurry of snow falling, snowflakes gently twirling and landing on your shoulders and in your hair. It's not enough to stop the work, but it may send several people to crowd inside coffee shops for a hot drink or shops to take a break from the cold.

Bet you weren't expecting that influx of business, were you?

And later…much later, in fact, those carrying cell phones or tablets will feel a jolt from the device. A closer look will reveal that a new application has started to install itself on these devices, but you can't seem to open it right away. That's a bit odd, isn't it? It might be wise to check other devices in the city to see if the application's installed itself. Upon further investigation, though, you'll find only a handful of residents have the app installed. The app pops up on any public computer you may use but fades away the moment you log off.

Strange, strange, strange. Once it fully loads on your device, you'll find that the app, Retrospec, appears to be a social media app with the option to friend people, share statuses, pictures, videos and more. Those sections are currently blocked out, however. Take some time to fill out your profile if you'd like; that portion of the application seems to be the only one that can be accessed currently. All other social media (Facebook, Twitter, and regular texting) are accessible, but the app itself stubbornly remains on your own profile page.

Welcome to the [community profile] recolle test drive meme overflow post! You may use this post to post new top-levels if you didn't post to the original TDM (found here) or link your original top-level to continue threading.

All characters will be begin in-game AU'd as Recollé residents. You may use any of the above prompts for ideas or make up your own depicting your Recollé AU! Prompts do not have to be set in the districts listed above. You can review our list of locations for what's available. Please note that TDM threads can be used as samples, can be kept as game canon if both parties agree, and can also be used for bonus points for future item regains. (Additionally: we will not be allowing TDM threads to be used for memory regains.) Write as many or few prompts as you want, tag around, and have fun!

As a reminder: as per our app rules, please try not to reference other characters in your threads or in your AUs if that character isn't being applied for! Our favorite example is as follows: if an Elsa from Frozen is being TDM'd, we ask that the player not reference her sister Anna by name unless an Anna is planning to TDM and be part of the same AU. Elsa can reference her younger sister in threads as much as she'd like if she has a sister in her AU, but we ask that names are not specified without having that character TDM'd and without the player's permission. Please also remember that posting to the TDM does not equate a reserve, which open on 1/18.

The January 2017 TDM directory can be found here. The January 2017 Workshop can be found here. The mod questions comment is here.

( There's caring about your phone and then there's caring about your phone, sir... on the other hand, Yuri will be glad for that on point selfie game. It's one of those fine arts he likewise enjoys.

Then he's watching this guy pivoting and showing off his heels, which is way more attention than he'd figured was about to go toward heels. Which, honest, you do you, but it's the implication that most of his shoes are like this that actually causes Yuri to so thoughtfully blurt out:
)

You seriously — do you have something against your legs?!

( He wonders this about anyone who insists on constantly wearing heels; don't ask the dancer to talk about worries concerning tendon or muscle tightening, let alone stress fractures to the bones of the feet this is a nightmare?!

Also Yuri it's rude to question fashion choices of people you've just met and have zero vested interest in.

[For a year and a half now Hibiki Kagawa has lived in Recollé, working as a hairdresser to pay the bills and spending many an evening performing as the musician "Kōmori". Perhaps he recalls Takakage as a client who would read while getting a haircut, or perhaps he knows Takakage through osmosis from the student populace. Perhaps, even, the familiar wail of a shamisen so far from Japan caught Takakage's attention in the past.

Either way, though they are not quite acquaintances, there is enough recognition when they pass in the street that Hibiki turns back, amusement dancing in his eyes. He wears his hard shamisen case on his back, evidently taking a break between rehearsals and his later performance as part of the musical contingent of the festival to enjoy what's on offer.]

Overwhelmed, professor? [He drawls in a friendly tone.] You look lost.

[In... months? Akira quirks an eyebrow while Romani explains his nutritional situation to him in greater detail, which explains, at least, his great need to keep the chicken breast. It's a holiday, which may be a rare relief from his long hours. Just enough time to cook.

He blinks at the sight of his smile and finds himself frowning at it, as though its sincerity actually radiated light too bright for his dark eyes. Akira's teeth click together and he gives Romani a judgemental glare.]

...Unless poor health is your goal, you should really cut that habit and make the time for cooking properly. You should know this, but you laugh? Gross.

[Akira drops his hand from the chicken stock. It's a silent agreement to the compromise. He shoves his hands in the pocket of his sweater and shrugs his shoulders while he glances at something off in the distance.]

Fine. After all that, I'll settle... as long as you're paying.

[Because if there's anything a high school student living on his own doesn't have, it's money. too bad there's still no CHICKEN ANYMORE, HA HA]

[At least Anya will benefit from the ride, too.]

We'll save energy for the walk home. There isn't going to be room on the bus with groceries.

[It's that time of the year when everyone is out and about, after all. He was lucky that he didn't have to stand in the bus on his way here. Not to mention, buses have a certain rule:]

You wouldn't be able to eat the cinnamon rolls, either.

[No matter the reason for calming her down, it worked enough to keep him safe. Akira glances down at the phone, continuing with his facade of pure innocence.]

You're accusing me of being a thief now? Me? You must be joking. I'm the one who was waiting here for the rightful owner of this phone! Maybe I should just hand this over to the police instead? Let them deal with your poor attitude? Or...?

[Their audience made of passersby are placated, both by Mina's dying hostility and Akira's, well, not being a thief...? Possibly.]

Or, you can go without all that hassle by being a little more cooperative.

[ Shan strikes an interesting contrast with Anya by their side - a figure tall and lanky, brown hair in waves down to cover their shoulders, indigo eyes (contacts, of course) always slightly shaded by an unshakable smile. Their jacket is fur-lined to ward off the cold, but there than that they seem to be quite at home in the weather.

The two of them probably just met - they're quite striking, with features and voice neither male nor female, a notable mastery of stage sound system and lights, and the ability to switch between seven languages (including Russian). ]

What's the shining idea, Nastya?

[ They give nicknames to everyone they meet, and she's no exception. ]

[Ah, Shan. Just the person he needs. With subtle reluctance, Takakage hands over his phone just in case they needed a reference.]

Like I said, you can just call me Mori. Even sensei would be fine. [The problems of being the son of supposed 'blue blood'.]

Is this something you seen before?

[If he had a customer who would come to his store every once in a while, asking for 'the usual', it would most likely be him. Takakage would be that kind of person.

Certainly, Hibiki doesn't strike him as someone he taught. Law students didn't tend to look that striking. Or have fun hobbies.]

Hello there. With so many things to see it is quite hard to decide on where to start.

[ His phone is taken and placed next to Shan's own console - apart from their work computer, there's also a sleeker laptop opened on the same table. Shan waves a hand before speaking, eyes focused on the screens before them. ]

And like I've said before, you have a certain style. It'd be less fun to just use your normal name, hmmm?

[ They barely touch the university-given computer, instead hooking up his phone to their own device. Several diagnostic windows open up and they operate it with practiced ease. ]

Indeed I have. It also appeared on my machine, which is highly suspect given that I've put a lot of security. [ Military grade, even. ] It wasn't downloaded into my device from the internet, and I haven't been able to root it yet. I'll scan your phone to see if it's the same package.

[Kids and their dual screens nowadays. If anything, he'll rather not be placed on a pedestal.]

What kind of style? I am curious to hear. [Old? Extravagant? Both? The politicians with their pressed suits and shiny watches come into his mind.]

That is odd. It also appeared on the library computers momentarily. I wonder if it is an attempt to hack into government servers.

ahh i'm excited for the chance to play him!!

[personal profile] appraiser 2017-01-19 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry~ [ He calls out the apology while he chases after a little terrier, which skitters to a stop at Anya's feet, makes a little jump for a loose end of streamer, then goes bounding off after the deflating balloon just as Ryoji comes close enough to see Anya's face more clearly. ] Oh! But fate sure is kind to me today: to think it led me straight to an angel!

[ His smile softens, tips of his fingers pressed lightly against his chest. ]

As an apology, let me help you with that.

[ He extends a hand in offer to share the burden of the rolls of streamers, but like nearly everything he's gotten his hands on today— balloons, a thick plastic plate, a half-eaten hot dog a little boy had dropped on the ground— it's with two or three dogs crowding in to see what new toy or tasty treat Ryoji's brought for them today. The colorful streamers sure look tantalizing. Can they eat it? ]

[ If this was in their own home, they might have up to four screens. The more the merrier, yeah? ]

What kind of style, you say?

[ They stand, leaving their laptop to run its program, and places one hand to their chin as if in contemplation. Moving from their seat, they circle him once of twice, brows furrowed in thought. ]

If I had to put it in words... I would say a crane. Tsuru-dono... that doesn't sound like a bad title, does it?

[ Satisfied, they take their seat again and swivels a full revolution on it for good measure. ]

As for the program - it hasn't done anything malicious so far. I keep my laptop very well maintained, so if it tried to do anything it'd trip a thousand wires.

[ That's an exaggeration, but. They don't say it, but there's confidential information on their computer too. Hackers keep secrets which would be good targets for information gathering. If someone tried to hack a hacker, they would notice. ]

[ Cover him how? Akira looks to have the girth of a sapling, and would have a much easier time sneaking a peak with that height of his as compared to Ryoji. Who looks excited at being hand chosen from the crowd, out of convenience or not, so at least Akira made a sound choice in somebody who's readily amiable. ]

Yes, sir!

[ He raises a hand in mock salute, own interests piqued because whatever's inside the truck must be interesting if this guy's going through the theatrics. And then bounds straight off towards the truck, his long yellow scarf trailing after him like a, well, yellow flag, in this case. Not glaring enough to draw immediate attention, but when Ryoji hauls himself up to peer into one of the slits on the side of the truck, his voice sure does. ]

[He's just trying to cut through the celebration square to get home faster. Unfortunately, this seems to have had the opposite effect.]

Do I look like I want a balloon? In my day, festivals didn't try to sell you all these...ephemerals! No, I do not want a free sample! I'll eat when it's my actual mealtime! That's why your generation has all these issues, you know-you don't know how to keep to a proper schedule!

IV

[Have an irritated older man waving his cane at an unfortunate younger employee. It's one of those fancy ones with a claw at the end and a bunch of carvings.]

[He spins around when he hears that shout, and unfortunately that's when the clawed tips of his cane catch on the grass and the older man goes sprawling over. At least that means the balloon misses him? He slowly gets up, spitting out grass from between his teeth.]

...control your balloon, child. [Wow, he can't believe he just said that.]

I haven't had the best of luck when it comes to balloons today but I'll do my best! [ she has to! being a teacher to young children means being a good role model for them. she'll try to make sure if any of her students are here, they know she's working hard outside of the classroom as well. if they're around. never hurts to be careful.

she does her best to make sure the balloons are nice and secured when tying them down. after her last encounter with a balloon flying away, she wants to make sure no one experiences that so let's make sure this stays where it's supposed to be. (looks like all those camping trips paid off!) ]

... There! I think that's the last one on my end here. [ good luck trying to fly away now, balloons! she now turns to augustine, her smile bright and satisfied as she hurries over to his side. ] How are you holding up? Need an extra hand?

she goes to each and every one of the balloons that have been tied up, testing the strings and fixing those that were at risk of becoming untied. but, surprisingly (and happily enough) enough, there weren't that many she had to fix.

[The poor employee doesn't dare to speak up against the angry old man. If she waits long enough, she supposed, he'll leave here alone, but that doesn't appear to be the base. Out of the corner of her eyes, she spots Mohammed. He had only volunteered with setting up stalls and handing out fliers, and now was his time to leave and actually enjoy the festival.

But, as anyone who knows him well would know, he couldn't refuse a plea to help. The poor teenager was being yelled at for no good reason. There were definitely horses in there. Those bird noises were just his imagination. It was most likely him subconsciously missing his pet budgies.

...

Well, he can't allow this to happen. He puts on his most serious face, the one that coworkers joke is the reason everyone overestimates his age by 15 years. He has been told he was good at dealing with emotional customers, so what harm could another crotchety old man do? He strides over, still wearing the free Founder's Day t-shirt they gave out of volunteers, and clears his throat to catch his attention.]

Excuse me sir, but we ask that you don't bother our workers when we're on a tight schedule. [His voice is steady, forcing the contrast between his and the old man's demeanor. He hopes this gives the impression that he's an actual supervisor rather than a random 26-year-old snooping around.]
