TEST DRIVE
MAY TEST DRIVE
The city of Recollé...

...well. Good luck!

I.
You might've noticed by now that some things in this dear city of yours are a little...weird. Most of the buildings and landmarks around you are only partially visible and the world appears to be covered in all kinds of strange colors.

As you step out the door today, you can't quite shake off the feeling that you're being followed. Every time you turn your head, nothing appears to be in your line of vision but the creeping sensation won't go away. However, with one final well-timed turn you catch it out of the corner of your eye: a large paintbrush dripping in your favorite color, floating in mid-air. The brush doesn't seem to go away no matter how long you look at it, but one of two things happens here.

For those of you who grab the brush, you'll find yourself suddenly yanked forward as the brush guides you to a nearby building, bush, or busy sidewalk, the colored paint splattering everywhere but leaving behind a black finish instead of the original color. The brush has a mind of its own as it brings you right next to a friend or a stranger to get to work. They must have a brush, too.

For those of you who ignore the brush, however...well...it doesn't like being ignored. As you turn away the brush zips forward and begins to paint your face. And your arms. And your clothes? Hopefully someone will come by and try to help soon!

II.
With that exciting chain of events out of the way, it's time to get to work! It's not hard to notice what it is you're supposed to do now. Certain members of the city have paintbrushes similar to yours and only those with brushes can restore the city as it was. Individually painting the area will highlight all items in black, but pairing up with someone else's color will allow for a bit of color to attach. Blending the brushes together will generate new, bright colors that will stick! Two reds can paint an object red while a red and a blue can change an object to purple.

Of course, you're free to go at it alone. There's nothing stopping you from embarking on this journey with your own two hands. On the other hand the longer you work by yourself, the higher your risks become of unearthing something you may not want. One minute you might be painting a garden bench back into existence when suddenly a sound alerts you that something's wrong. The object seems to warp right in front of you, sprouting teeth, eyes, and even sometimes limbs. Non-stationary objects such as vehicles, animals, postal boxes and more will begin to chase painters around all five districts of the city. Stationary objects will do anything to grab you in their grasp and stop your hard work. The only way to soothe these objects is to mix up a new color and douse them with paint, but that just might be a little harder than it looks while you're on the move.

III.

The strange thing is that even with a large portion of the city invisible to the naked eye, by now everyone around you has accepted that this is just how things will go. If you talk to your family or friends or teachers or co-workers who are without a paintbrush, they'll simply tell you that even though it started a few weeks ago there are other things in the city to worry about. They'll tell tales of people with powers and weird physical changes that shouldn't be possible and they'll point out the thinning monsters that are roaming the city and cleaning up the stray paint.

Despite this, life is expected to go on as normal. Classes are still in session and your employers expect you to be at work on time. Grocery stores are up and running and if you can find them several of your favorite businesses are still open as well. Maybe today you're in class procrastinating on a school project, or perhaps you're staring out the window at your boring job waiting for the next time you can catch a break. If you're brave enough, you might be one of those who wanders the half-missing aisles of Freshens because your family still insists on their cookout this weekend. This appears to be the new norm...so what are you doing today in the lovely "city" of Recollé?

IV.
Several citizens have been using their brushes to expand their horizons and paint beyond the limits of the city, working to recreate the roads to go back to other regions. While this will require far more work and dedication, some of the paths are outlined and cleared.

Granted, with the revival of the roads comes the revival of a few other creatures including monsters of varying breeds. Have you ever fought a monster before? No? Well now's your chance! Some of these monsters are easy to take down but others will hunt and attack. While the paint brushes won't do much to deter the creatures themselves, they're useful to paint new hiding spots until you come up with a plan of attack. That counts, doesn't it? Good luck out there.

BONUS.
Perhaps the strangest thing of all is that your phone works. It's fully functional, colored and solid without having to repaint it into existence. Being able to send texts and check maps are vital tools in the restructure of the city, but at the same time it comes with something you may not want.

The Retrospec app appears on your phone and even without setting up a profile you'll find yourself receiving a message from a Retrospec user named Zee Carlisle.

Bad timing, this was really bad timing! Hey newbies, sorry, we are a little swamped with the stabilization process right now but let me kick you to some people who can help out.

It's all the text says before you find yourself redirected to a private chat with another Retrospec user. Don't be shy now! Say hi and ask all of the questions you need!

Welcome to the [community profile] recolle test drive meme! All characters will be begin in-game AU'd as Recollé residents. You may use any of the above prompts for ideas or make up your own depicting your Recollé AU! Prompts do not have to be set in the districts listed above. You can review our list of locations for what's available. Please note that TDM threads can be used as samples, can be kept as game canon, and can also be used for bonus points for future item regains. Share a few minor details of your AU, tag around, and have fun!

For current players, please remember that TDM threads can only be used for bonus points, not regains.

Please note: you will need a reserve to apply, and current characters must have full AC posted at the time of their reservation.

Finally, please remember that this will be the last application month until September!

Your May TDM directory is here, and your AU workshop is here! Our mod questions thread for this TDM is over here!

[ koga takes a seat too, staring down the coffee before taking a sip. not bad at all! the warmth actually helps with tension, holding the if akira's bean water ends up competition though, he'll try the tea next time. if there is one? he isn't a big fan of the parents, even when he was so excited to like, knock them down a peg or two for being oblivious jackasses--

ah, life doesn't give you what you want, and taking it out on sena ain't gonna make him feel better. more like shit, really. that kind of question is not something he was prepared, he kind of curses a memory wanting to let their talk of their son go over his head--

actually? shit. he shakes his head. ]

Now I've gotta apologize, I don't recall. Something about how you haven't talked to them in a while so surely, you're doing fine.

[ he's quiet, then sets down his cup, leaning baclk on the sofa and crossing his leg (he was about to put his feet on the coffee table but that rude.) ]

That's pure crap, ain't it. Making that kind of assumption 'cuz it's easy.

And that's not my fault now, is it? It's all because the stupid app's blocked off all forms of communication in and out of the city. I've been trying to contact them since last year.

[ all those countless phone calls, only to be redirected to some stranger on retrospec who's willing to hear him out for some damn reason. the last thing he wants is pity from them.

but mm. takin a fuckin sip here, babes. ]

Easy, my ass. Bet they're having a hell of a time in... wherever they are right now. Could you recall where they are right now?

[ Koga tries to comprehend that first part. He's been here for a year or so, and he didn't notice that kind of problem? Then again, he's cut ties from his relatives and didn't have much in the way of close friends to worry about him and vice versa. He does get the notion about the app being part of the problem though, and it would be overstaying his welcome to have Sena back up what the veteran users already know as fact.

He can feel a little upset on his... lookalike's behalf though. He met his parents, and this divide between what they believe is going on for their own comfort and what's really going on... anyone would find that frustrating. He frowns, rubbing his temple ]
.

I get it, the city and that Retrospec company-app-whatever does... has been up to weird shit. [ Don't snap at the messenger, he hasn't even delivered the bad news. He's decided to hold off for now... this flat is really high up. ] I don't have anyone long-distance I'd talk to nowadays, but that must be a headache.

[ A disgruntled sound comes from his throat at having to answer where the parent be at. At this point he wouldn't soften it up to make this guy feel sympathetic, Koga doesn't think they deserve it from their son who actually wanted to contact him and do this instead. So, he'll be blunt and his tone is almost flat. It's something between disappointment and feeling sorry for Sena ]

I honestly couldn't tell if they were on a business trip or a work retreat. Can you believe they wanted to meet up with my mom at one of the hotels they're staying at thanks to their workplace paying for it, how obnoxious. Where I met them isn't far from here though, another seaside city with potential to grow for businesses and that's why they were there.

[ ... ]

Is it me, or they... really love working?

It's something like that. My family moved here in the States because they got relocated here from Japan, and they chose this city in particular because a bunch of my relatives are here.

[ he's no longer close with them now that they're off the app, but that's for the better at this point. who knows what kind of person they were? how they'd react when sena breaks down again? so far, kei's the only one who's been patient and sensible about the entire thing, which makes sena all the more curious now that he thinks about it. ]

Mm, that sounds exactly like them. The first rule of money is never use your own, as they say. But you're right - they overwork themselves to the bone for some damn reason. It's not like their job's that exciting or anything. It's just mindless business work.

[ which is why sena aims not to fall on that career on the off chance that both his modeling work and hypothetical solo vocalist dreams fail on him. he'd suffocate and die there, his beauty wasted. he can't be like them.

he hasn't realized that he's clutching the couch cushions so tightly until he snaps out of it, shaking his head and retrieving the package next to him and setting it on his lap. ]

This is way too overdue for a Christmas present, but. [ sighs, shoots a glance at koga and back at this parcel in his hands. ] Here I go.

[ and he'll open it delicately, making sure not to rip and tear at it as much as he really want to out of sheer anger. stupid, stupid, stupid...! whether it's fragile or not he might smash it on the floor once koga's gone. ]

[ It doesn't look it, but Koga's actually listening pretty intently. He didn't expect sena to try him that much? They've got similar faces, but they're still almost strangers. Maybe he just doesn't get the chance to talk about them much and it'd a good opportunity as any. Koga's met them, after all. ]

Got it. I would have said Recolle ain't bad, but I guess that's up in the air now. I've been here for a year or so since my mom died, but we lived here for a bit when I was a kid, too.

[ Oh, should he be here to watch this? That committed glance has him stay though, just because maybe if it's a bad gift he can somehow support the guy? Again, they're high up if he wants to toss the cardboard box out the window if nothing else.

It's fragile stuff, so good on your self control there, Sena. There's a photo of his parents (having fun) in a sea glass frame, a giant peachy conch like the kind you'd see on travel ads, a necklace made of shell pieces, some travel magazines, and a set of touristy glassware with the resort's logo on them. ]

...Tacky?

[ There it is. ]

[ sena's face is unreadable as he carefully puts these souvenirs aside, taking the framed photo of his parents with giant smiles plastered on their faces and giving it one good look. it really makes him think, that they were out there whooping it up at some seaside town while he was... god, when was this taken? if this was taken last december, they would've seen him having a time of his life on stage for once -

but mm, no time like the present. he places it on the coffee table and sighs some more. ]

You got that right. [ he chuckles a little. ] I was expecting something more... wintery. But I guess you couldn't get that from the beach.

[ shrugs. whatever! he'll figure out what to do with them. just out of koga's line of sight. ]

Thanks, though. For going out of your way to deliver this to me. It's been a while since they sent me anything. [ aaaaaa that sounds fucking pathetic - ] Because of Retrospec bullshit, that is.
