It's so so rare that Minato finds somebody who acts as if they don't care, who are able to detach themselves from things and appreciate people who speak their minds without sugarcoating or tempering things down for the sake of others; Minato doesn't realize he does this, but he mirrors people in that sense— if Baren or anybody else is blunt towards him, he will be blunt back. Baren isn't afraid to ask pointed questions and Minato isn't afraid to be brutally honest in return, because there is zero reason for him to lie or be considerate of Baren's feelings since he's of the understanding that Baren is like him, in that he puts more weight in the truth. A lot of what they discussed, I feel like was possible because they set that groundwork as strangers; like Minato expressed later in their first conversation, he likes strangers because it's harder to talk about this sort of stuff once you become friends, which is backwards thinking and messed up but is how he thinks anyways. The concern he feels from Baren is exactly what Baren said to him- that he's a concerning person, and Minato is fine with that so long as he's careful not to confuse "concern" with "care." He doesn't have to worry about making Baren upset, which is what's largely holding Minato back from talking with a lot of his other cr. Being able to talk about serious things is good for Minato because so rarely brings it up with others, and even better is that Baren can talk about that stuff objectively. Even better, is the fact that Baren will tell Minato to fuck off if he's being unreasonable, and that's one of the things Minato appreciates above all else.
