Seriously, he does like Shinji and he is impressed at how smart he is. There's also his confidence, Makoto doesn't even have half of his confidence, yet here's Shinji already letting the world know he's here and they better be ready for him. He does give him a fright sometimes. (Please don't run away or get hurt or anything) Overall he does want to help Shinji in anyway he can. He's not gonna hover or constantly poke him, but he will be there to offer advice (if he can), show him so new video, age appropriate game (Mario and Animal Crossing for you sir), and he'll give him candy too.
