You know how Shuji started off by fanboying Howard, but that quickly turned into kindred spirit feels - social anxiety, #justlittlewriterthings, being high-key concerned about the stuff Retrospec is doing to you. Shuji can empathize with a number of Howard's problems, and in return he's willing to open up to Howard about some of those problems because he knows Howard won't judge him for going 'yeah sometimes I can't answer my phone because talking to people is too much'.
Shuji thinks Howard is a good person? Like, nervous wreck sure, but underneath the anxiety and fear is the person who supported him when he published his first book and spoils cats and doesn't know why shopping at Hot Topic should be an insult. He's a dear friend and if anyone says anything about Howard's eyes or tentacles Shuji will Fight Them.
And yes, he is very here for tentacle hugs, and all kinds of hugs if Howard wants them.
