AU WORKSHOP - JANUARY Welcome to Recollé's AU Workshop! On this post players new and old are encouraged to help one another make connections for their AU lives and to ask for or offer ideas if they so choose. To reserve a 2nd character you must have a pass for the previous month's AC with your first character. For a 3rd character, you must have a pass for the previous two months' AC for both of your characters. In addition, we do ask that the AC for the current month be met and filled into your AC comment by the time of your reserve. It must be full AC. This means you must have 20 comments between at least 2 and at most 4 threads and one memory regain listed for the current month's AC period. AU NAME: Karen "Kara" Ellis
AU AGE: 28 (Aged up to be closer to her non-stasis age)
AU OCCUPATION: Biology Research Associate
BLURB: Karen is a socially "unkempt" young woman from rural Oklahoma who's struggled her entire life to overcome where she came from and get into the career of her dreams. She pursued a career in science and ultimately fell into biology, with a focus on bioengineering. Kara's basically managed to get as far as she has through pure ambition and the desire to prove herself and her capabilities. Unfortunately that makes her come across as combative at times, and she's not the easiest person to get along with until you get to know her. She tries looking out for a former foster kid her parents took in (Kara Lee maidofmistakes) out of a sense of not-quite-sisterly affection where she can, as well.

Kara's somewhat self-destructive, leads an unhealthy lifestyle, and is something of a mess outside of her professional life. She likes to seem put together, and can fake it, but she's prone to being kind of lax and disorganized when not at work. She is a good friend, and she'll definitely make sure that her friends have a good time when they're around! Drinks for everyone, and food too. The kind of gal that'll bring you Starbucks when you didn't ask for it, but may also give you a really blunt answer when you didn't either.

Moved to Recolle for Undergrad and stayed ever since, she doesn't do a lot of teaching (basically limits herself to high, high level graduate courses) but she does offer tutoring, and biology students may know her as the grumpy young researcher. She tries looking out for a former foster kid her parents took in (Kara Lee) out of a sense of not-quite-sisterly affection where she can, as well.

LOOKING FOR: Friends, of course, and ENEMIES, please. Tutored students that need help with science, lab techs, students she has taken a personal interest in. People who she knew growing up, drinking buddies, barkeeps. Whatever, I'm pretty open!

I would love for her to have blood kin of some sort. Cousins for sure, because she has one really famous one in canon. An ex or two, maybe even an ex-fiance or something if anyone has an interest in a seriously failed relationship, IDK that could be fun.

Shuji is Kara's neighbor, which means he probably was Karen's neighbor also! They're relatively close in age (he's 25 now) but he's been trying and failing at college for... a while.

A connection through school is probably easiest. Kara would've been fostered years ago, outside Recolle. If he's around Kara, then Karen recognize him for sure. And if he's the sort of struggling student that seeks out aid, she has a soft spot for those types!

He's more of a struggling student that will Definitely Pass This Year, This Time For Sure, He's Got This.

But he does spend a good amount of time around Kara! He doesn't live with his parents anymore but he visits them pretty frequently, and is sometimes around to help fix up Kara's bruises. (The sidewalk's bumpy, anybody could fall and scrape their knee... twice...)

That works. She proooobably has mixed feelings about him for not passing for so long, but if he's working at it, and taking care of Kara, then he's cool

Also he got a novel published so that has to count for something. It counts for something in his heart.

Small Kara is still at least attempting to pretend to the world that she's Totally Normal and Definitely Has A Permanent Family, but with Shuji (neighbour) and Luna (they were in the same house once) knowing the truth and talking about it openly, she's running out of excuses. Non-Small Kara also joining Retrospec will make her nervous, but she also might go to her for advice.

Karen-Kara will definitely put those puzzle pieces together pretty quick. And attempt a solution in some form. Probably just being around more. Kids gotta have some sort of adult in her life.

Well, scientist is definitely right but god she'll make a terrible parental figure. BUT she will try. Kid deserves something.

alright so i dont know if you're familiar with Qubit's canon but i would be deeply amused at him being one of Karen's exes

I'm not super familiar with his canon, but I've read volume 1, so I have a general idea of Qubit and the Plutonian and how funny that could be.

I'm 100% in favor of them having dated (If he's around 30 that'd be perfect) for a while. Ideally long enough that they know one another well, and that it was probably at least somewhat amicable. For whatever reason I have this "Recolle U Jerry and Elaine" sort of image. I think that it'd be interesting for both of them to deal with Irredeemable canon kinda messing with their dynamic.

Haha I've never seen Seinfeld so I had to look that up but yes!! I like that idea a lot :D They can be the friends who are like good-naturedly sassing each other all the time. And he probably sends her all sorts of scholarly articles he thinks she'll find interesting, because apparently he is the kind of nerd who reads scholarly articles in his free time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm thinking for him to get a bunch of positive superhero memories back before any of the bad stuff, too, so they can have all that cool stuff and then he's just gradually "oh god... oh god they're all dead :("

I like the sounds of that. I'm not sure how familiar you are with New 52, but I think my initial plan for Kara is to regain her Red Lantern ring before she gets back her Kryptonian stuff. Which comes with it's own set of complications but there will still be plenty of superheroics involved.

AHAHAHA oh my god I did not know she had one of those!!! Oh man that is amazing. Does that one still make the wielder barf blood everywhere?

Yep! It was a major arc in New 52 for her. It does still make her barf super lava blood everywhere, until she gets dunked in some magic blood. I'm going to proooobably buy the ring from a point after it's calmed it's tits some and isn't making that happen. Unless there's a way I can work it so someone else can not make her go nuts.

Most of her time as a Red is spent roaming the galaxy with a bunch of other Reds that are trying to stop Atrocitus and his cat from destroying shit. And I think not immediately making her have all the Kryptonian powers would be a cool twist for her.

Dex-Starr is pretty amazing. He's a good kitty. Who...also happens to vomit magic superblood everywhere.

DC comics are weird as hell. It's a good kind of weird. But weird.

Are we still on for Kara having some kind of CR with the vigilante? (Unless something better comes to mind.)

Yes we are. He can have helped her out of a bad spot, handwaved during a log. And if the chance for another presents itself during, say, February...that would be cool.
