He grew up without his parents and surrounded by adults that were trying to ingratiate themselves to him and suck up to his dad, so that has made him a bit paranoid of people's motive when they approach him.
However, while clueless, he's really a nice guy. If you show him how to do something he doesn't know, he'll try it and practice until he gets it right.
