Depending on how well he knows and likes you as a person, determines how much he dished out on your gift. Very close friends he will put lots of thought into, for others he will give food, probably fire whiskey or butter beer.

But yeah, what would your character give this lovable jerk who pretends to act like a scrooge?

Due to the fact that Elliot saved his life this year, Derek would probably fret over what to give him as a huge thank you. This is partly due to feeling he doesn't actually know Elliot that well personally, and he's mentally kicking himself for that now that he feels needs to get Elliot some nice gift. He would finally settle on giving him this insane gift basket full of fire whiskey, butter beer, various teas, coffee, a gift card to some nice restaurant in Recolle, and one of his last chocolate frog he got from Retrospec (which he had been saving for himself, but in his mind, Elliot now deserves way more than him). He knows Elliot makes magic food, so why not share a bit of his own magic food right? Even if it only moves around.

And even then, Derek will still feel like it isn't enough.
